Consolidated Kansas

Mother in law is looking @ a house in Manter...Stanton County about an hour from her.

$450 a month, option to buy, population 171!!

Will be a New experience living in a tiny town!

Hopefully backyard chickens will be okay, tried to Google it...not much luck...I can't imagine it'd be an issue...

, I need more information. Are the RIRs with the other birds? Have you noticed any congestion sneezing, wheezing etc? What color is the poop? Is it a normal poop color? The first thing that comes to mind is the cooler temperatures. It could have put them under stress causing pasty butt. They are older than normal for that to happen but it's entirely possible. If it were me I would add some heat until it warms back up because sick chickens need heat. I would also give them some probiotics of some kind or add some vitamins to their water. Try mixing some pedialyte or generic form in their water.
@LavrisChica As it's been mentioned. Sweeter heaters are awesome. Yes they do cost but I have figured out the number of heat bulbs I was using they certainly pay for themselves and save money in the long run. I still have a few heat bulb holders I will use for an emergency but I have have had so many close calls with heat bulbs. I built a stand and have a couple sweeter heaters hanging from it in my brooder room. I plan to build another one just like it so I can have a much larger area covered.
I buy mine from eNasco.com. They are about the same price as the Sweeterheater company but you save substantially on postage. Plus they put them on sale now and then.
I've also used sweeterheaters with puppies and they work great.
@CowboysAngel , small town living is great assuming you can find work nearby. I did a google on Manter and it looks like a charming little town. Not even paved streets but the houses look decent. There's a few trailer houses. They have a co-op and I could see some pens in yards that looked like chicken pens. Could be a dream place to live. Looks like a job in Ulysses would be a possibility. Good luck. What kind of work does your DH do?

I had a really busy day today. The pens are flooded again and stink nasty. I moved two more breeds of chicken to the new building today. I am selling some breeders tomorrow so it will be easier to pick the ones I want to keep in there in the morning. I was going to do that today but after wollering around in the mud all afternoon I decided it could wait until morning. I'm slowly making progress. I have a rooster pen to empty and I can take down a whole section of pens. I have to move a hoop coop but I plan to move a metal building I bought over there and build pens for the other peafowl. Maybe I'll finally have them in one area. So much for getting more landscaping done; with this rain I don't even dare attempt it.
I got the greenhouse cleaned out and man was that a nasty mess. I got fresh straw down and let the older goslings out to free range. I still have about 6 smaller ones I have penned in the back because their just too young to make it out free ranging yet.
I had a bag of shavings that got damp so I just emptied the whole bag in the pen attached to the brooder house. I hope we get some wind and some of that muck dries out. I couldn't get the water to drain and I was starting to loose birds in the mess. I plugged the sweeter heater in this evening so they could stay warm since the poor things were damp from all the rain.

All the chickens are together there poop is white and brown and I gave them some coccidiosus medicine not sure it would help but I did it so hopefully it won't hurt them

He does just about anything farm/horse/agriculture related. He was doing Handy man/lawn care here. He's going to apply at Tyson, he's worked there before...here at our local plant...his step-Dad works there, but he won't be working under him...neither one of them want anyone to think there's favoritism going on. His step- dad won't be in a position to hire or fire him.

Google wasn't cooperating much with me today...maybe it was my phone, or the internet...but I couldn't get a satellite image to save my life...

Found the cafe's facebook, and the church's... The weekend "chicken fry and cherry cobbler" sounds yummy... Lol

If you have a church and a restaurant what more do you need? I guess when I was younger I wouldn't have appreciated the small town atmosphere nearly as much. But I think they are great. I was raised in a small town and life was so much simpler and easier then. Income is never as high but then it doesn't cost as much to live either.
My internet was down this morning when I got up and it's amazing how it disrupted my normal routine. I make my coffee and sit down here to start my day.
Busy day ahead. I have a lot of chicken catching to do.

CowboysAngel good luck on the house hunt, I know that can be stressful & especially moving so far & on the job hunt as well.

josey8 I hope the medicine helps. It does sound more like pasty butt. Usually you get that with young chicks but maybe Danz is right that it's stress from the weather. I'm hoping mine do OK out there with this darned cool front & all of the rain, it's crazy.

I think today is supposed to be the last day of rain for awhile, I sure hope so. We need it to dry out some again, it's just a big muddy mess everywhere.

We live 10 miles out of town now, and the city is 76k people. Other than big lots, goodwill, and the dollar store I hate going to town!

A nice quiet small town with a sense of community will be wonderful! Its gonna be a lil like stepping backwards in time to when things were simpler. My favorite programs are little house on the prairie and the waltons!

It really is going to be wonderful. I keep wondering what the holidays are like... Lol we live so far out the decorations are just for the neighbors sheep and our chickens!

Thanks for welcoming me early :)

I think that I have figured out why we are getting so much rain. It is because all those former mid-westerners living in California that are praying for rain. It is being delivered to their birth places!
