Consolidated Kansas

Oh so you want acreage without a home? Or maybe a not so fancy home so you can rebuild. The problem with the flint hills is that so many people have huge ranches with thousands of acreas cause it takes so many to maintain cattle out there. I agree Chase county is the best area to enjoy the true flint hills.

Well, that's the dream anyway. I might have to adjust my expectations if that isn't realistic. But I don't want to give up too soon because I've been dreaming about it for so long and now I've finally decided I can do it. You're right about there being a lot of big ranches. But I just thought with so many people moving away from "the country" these days surely there is a place I can get 40 for myself. If I'm wrong, this won't be the first or last time!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmk....

I picked up five chicks a few weeks back. Not sure of age, but thinking they were 3-4 weeks old maybe. IDK for sure, though.
the gal I got them from said they were a Plymouth Rock mix, but didn't say what they were mixed with. I didn't care, as I was simply looking for some brooder mates for Pecos, new duckling. Anyhow, I have since tried contacting her to ask what they were mixed with, but, no luck in getting her to respond.

They're not attractive by any means and I dubbed them the "vultures". However, I have become quite attached to them, as they are the most sweetest and calmest chick I've had experience with. They love attention, stand perfectly still when you reach for them, and this morning, while sitting outside with the birds, chatting and whatnot (lol), they took turns hopping into my lap for hugs and strokes. Warmed my pea-pickin' heart, it did!

So, what do y'all think they are???

three of the five are like these on my lap. Two of the five have a soft gray on their heads and interesting lined markings on their heads as well. They are the most attractive of the bunch, but the less wanting my affections. he he he

I did notice that several have really pretty green and purple sheens to their black feathers, and a few have tinges of reddish-brown.

Have you tried this website: http://www.landandfarm.com/search/Kansas-land-for-sale/
Found this as well http://griffinrealestateauction.com/RURAL_-_Prairie_Acres.php
I found another 160 acres in Chase county with no road to access it.
Weird.

I'm going to guess just a mix of backgrouds. Obviously from Blue or black stock judging from the leg color. Just chickens.

"just chickens"

I really do love that on so many levels. he he he

My fluffy-butt buddies are just that, my buddies, since I'm not into show or breeding, etc. Just frenz in the yard with pretty eggs.

@LavrisChica , the way I see it all chickens came from just chickens. All known breeds were bred by combining land race breeds to get the qualities people wanted. Granted, it may have taken half a century or longer to meet the standards to be classed as a breed but it all started somewhere. I really enjoy my layers which mostly are intentially bred but some are just crosses that happened when a broody hatched. You create some wonderful birds that way without all the fuss. Plus they are often heartier and more adapted to your climate.
I love my fancy birds and am very proud of them. But most of my entertainment comes from these free ranging gals who just do their own chicken thing out there.

Truly, I never ever thought I'd love them so much!

Most people who get chickens say the same thing....unless they get meaties then it's just the entire opposite.
What is sad is I have found I love all the birds. It's a very difficult thing to control.

I've been busy for a couple of days & not much time to post & haven't felt well either. I don't take this heat too well at all these days & I have to go out & care for birds & animals. You all have been chatty while I wasn't reading, I tried to catch up but may have missed a few posts.

Chickens are very entertaining as well as the other birds I have, the guineas are just goofy & I get a kick out of watching my geese & ducks too. Speaking of geese, I let my big geese out of their new pen today hoping they have learned where home is now, keeping my fingers crossed. I let the 3 young ones out today & the older ones took them out to free range. They are having so much fun out there! The little ducks in the pen will miss their big buddies now that they've joined the other geese. The goslings were caring for the ducklings, it was so cute. The ducks are getting bigger now though so they should be OK. I will let them out to free range with the other ducks when they're a little older.

Welcome to the new folks! I hope you find the land you're looking for. There is nothing like living out in the country & having your own land & keeping animals & birds. I live in the Flint Hills in the southern part & it is unique.

TaraBella I'm glad you're back & everyone is OK. I had seen your posts about the accident on FB, what a traumatic event, geez. What a jerk that driver was to just keep on going like that. My son was in an accident recently as well & had his car totaled by a guy who wasn't supposed to even be driving. This was in OKC as well, the drivers there are insane, I hear about it all the time. The baby was in the car with him when this guy kept running into his car & he hit it over & over again. It has really messed up my son's back & he may have to have back surgery to fix it. At least he didn't get hit by a semi but still was injured by someone who should have never been driving a car.

This heat is really hard to take now that it's here. I'm having a really hard time dealing with it & getting the birds & animals cared for.

Thanks Trish. It really is a nightmare, especially when kids are with you. Sure hope your son heals quickly.

TaraBellaBirds, I am glad y'all are okay. Grandma IS a real super hero in my book, too. I hope they find the semi.

I always knew my MIL was one of the strongest woman I ever have known, but now I know she is #1! I have lost hope that we will find him or her, I just hope they don't sleep well, and never do shomething like this again.
I had heard you were in a wreck, TaraBellaBirds. So sorry but so glad that you are all at least repairable. Just a major reminder that life is too short and how you must be thankful for every minute.

Very much so. I am the kind of person that has a cool head until the emergency is over. Even with a concussion I was just trying to get things done, insurence, phone calls, paper work, etc.....the next day though I lost it.....I just kept thinking "Thank God my babies were belted, Thank God, we aren't planning a funeral (after seeing the pics of the van we realized my DH head hit the windshield), and Thank God that our family pulled through to help us get home and recover. We were so lucky and blessed!

I was in a bad wreck back in '95 where my car was T boned right at the drivers door. My seat belt saved my life cause my seat was ripped from the base. But the seat belt stayed in tact and kept my body from becoming air born. I did have a compression fracture in my spine where the force of the seat belt crossed my body, and a bruise on my shoulder where the shoulder belt caught it. It's funny how your subconscious mind takes over in crisis. I saw the vehicle coming and there was nothing I could do about it. The last thought going through my head then was that my kids were at home alone and no one was there for them when they'd be told I was dead.
When the first person showed up and tried to get me out of the car all I could say is, "My kids are home alone! " My kids are home alone!" I am sure they thought I had lost my mind. It took me several minutes I guess to realize that I had survived. Then panic set in because the door was crashed in on the opposite side of the car and I couldn't get out it. They had to show me that the whole drivers side was wide open and I could simply go through the big gapping hole.
Thank heavens I never had a wreck with my kids in the car.
