Thanks Chicken Danz! I love how much support and info im getting here! I sure hope everything goes/gets well with you!

SHould this still be the rooster I keep?

Danz sorry to hear about surgery that's never fun.
My tomatoes and corn are finally starting to get producing.

Has anyone ever used misters around their run area to help with cooling??? I'm using a fan and frozen milk jugs in the evening to cool the coop down at night. The wife talked about a mini A/C for the coop....

My Great Grandmother raised chickens in rural OK Panhandle. I was told that she hosed down the coops in the mornings.
Fans would help, I would have an issue with the cords in my coop.
I give mine cool treats during the hottest part of the day, as well as shallow pans that they can stand in.

Cochins are gentle souls and I've not had a mean one. I no longer raise them so I can just go from having them in the past. One of my very favorite all time birds was a gold laced cochin. He was beautiful and very docile. I would keep him unless he starts acting aggresive.

I used to use misters all the time. Even bought a huge set up to do several feet of misting at once... which I promptly missplaced and haven't ever found. I use pans of water, trash can lids, cut off barrels etc for the birds to stand in. When using a mister use them outside where it will dissapate... not in the coop itself. Using one in the coop can create a higher heat index and cause respiratory problems for birds. Great cooler outside though. I like using fans. Chickens can handle the heat if there is a breeze blowing. It's those hot humid still days that kill them.
I run electric cords all the time around the birds. They don't bother an electrified cord. However if it isn't plugged in they might bother it. My geese are the worst. They will chew on anything but not a cord that is powered up. Unplug it and it gets eaten!!!
It was really hot today. I can't imagine the weekend getting alot worse.

I have never used misters to cool my birds but i used them to water seedlings in my greenhouse that the birds live in. And i can tell you that the mist definitely cooled it off. I used some mister nozzles from amazon or something screwed into 3/4" pvc and with the auto draining valve they never really got clogged from the mineral water. obviously it needs some pressure to create the mist adequately but I was pleasantly surprised.

I tried misters at one point & the bad thing is that after awhile the water in the hose will heat up so you're just spraying hot water at them, not a good thing.

It has been really hot & still lately, it's hard to breathe when you go out, even in the evening. It's no wonder the birds are having problems. I just don't take this heat well at all & I come in just soaking wet & done in every evening after chores. It takes about all I have to get finished.

Yeah we're supposed to go get hay this Sat., 80 bales of it & it will take several trips to get it all.
