Quote: Wow that's not a great average for as many eggs as you had. If you have time when you are done be sure to check the eggs to see if fertility was bad or they died in the process. I'd be interested to know. Also it'll be fun to see what the turkeys do. Those silly girls are still laying once in while. Time to quit!!!

I am back !!!!!

Time to get some more chicks!

Anyone with any available???
So did you get permission to have birds again? How many chicks are you looking for? If nothing else I could incubate you some but you'd have to wait three weeks or so. It would have to be done right away and picked up right away though to fit in my schedule.
I changed pace today and mowed until I ran out of gas. I also sprayed round up in the newly redone flower bed. And then I sprayed the house for bugs. I need to get some more gas in the mower and go back to it. I'm not mowing everything. Just trying to get some bearings on things out here for fencing and such.

New to BYC but have had chickens a year and a half now. Looking to see if anyone has a "breed standard" Black Copper Maran.rooster they want to sell. I'm wanting to breed my blue copper marans next year. I live near Lawrence if anyone wants to pm me a price.

My coop/outbuilding is supposed to be delivered at 2:00 tomorrow. We will see. Then the real work will start, but it isn't a bit too soon. The Orps are getting picked on by the older hens, and the poor little Araucanas are sleeping under the ramps. I have a couple of hens who think they are crowded (and they are). I'm hoping to get the fence in this weekend and then finish the painting and other stuff by the middle of next week. We will have to put in the windows (they are framed in but not installed) and set up roosts and a pop door and paint. ARRRRGGG that sounds like a lot of work.

How exciting, a new coop! Finishing it will be some work but so rewarding for a new home for your birds.

Check with KSKingBee, send him a PM & see if they have any left. I know they said they had a few the other day & they have nice ones. I sold the only extra roo I had left. Oh & Welcome to the KS thread!

It will be a project (the coop) -- I couldn't get the editor to work when I did a quote.

It faces north with windows on the other 3 sides (they framed them in for me at Mark II). So far I've primed the floor (to be covered with cheap vinyl floor stuff) and the north and east sides of the building. They used shingles that match the house, so I'm painting it to match the house, too.

DH says he will do the windows "if he has to" so I called my handyman for that. I think maybe it would be good to have someone do it with experience, and he doesn't charge an arm and a leg. By the time he gets to me, I can have most of the interior stuff done.

It looks like it isn't level from the house, but the 4' level says it is, so it is an optical illusion.

I gotta get to work. I clean at the shelter this morning at 8 and I have stuff to do first. No time to fiddle around on the board today.

Welcome to our group. Are you wanting to do a breeding project or just want blue copper marans? There are several people who raise the blue coppers now since the color has been out for some time. I don't have Marans at all any more. We have a couple members over that direction.

DH realized I was serious finally about getting some pens done and he started complaining about all the lumber I was going to use to put in the runs for the building and the length of runs I planned to have. I agreed to shorten them to 34 feet instead of the 50 I had originally planned on. I don't like it but if it keeps the peace it will be worthwhile. I'll just have to be diligent about keeping my numbers down. There is still so much to do it's insane but I guess it will eventually get done.
I have so much to do again today. I'm just hoping we don't have rain this week like they forecast might happen.

sharol that looks like a nice little coop, you'll have to post pics when it's done.

I got two pullets in the mail today that I've been waiting for. They were "guaranteed" to be here yesterday by 3 p.m. Well guess what they didn't arrive till this morning & I'm so ticked about it. I paid for express & I might as well have paid for just priority as slow as they got here. Even our local postmaster was disgusted about it. They were very thirsty when I got them out of the box but seem to be OK otherwise. I was sweating bullets because these are some expensive birds.

I have lots to do today as well, I have to get out there in a bit & change out all of the water for the birds & refresh nest boxes besides some other things.

What are preferred breeds for Kansas?

You can have about any breed of chicken in Kansas. Chickens are pretty adaptable to all sorts of climates. I don't think I'd recommend a Hedemora cause it gets too hot for them and some of the smaller bantams that are lightly feathered may need acclimating for winter. It all depends on what you want a chicken for. Meat, laying, entertainment etc.
Welcome to the group and feel free to ask whatever you like, as well as tell us about yourself.
Glad you got your chicks,Trish. I think I read that if you don't get the package on time with Express the postal service will refund shipping. I was reading some of that earlier today.
I spent my entire day starting to get caught up indoors today. I've been so busy working outside that the house and stuff has been ignored way too long. Cleaning makes me grouchy. I didn't start my chores until 7:00 PM and had to quit because it got too dark see.

Yeah, I ordered the newer version of the one I have in the other coop from Fleming. I really like the one I have.

The run will go East about 30 feet and then South to the south line fence. We will patch in a bit of fence between the coop and the existing chain link fence on the west side. I had to keep it off the fence in order to paint it, and that will give the chickens some west side area in winter to sun bathe and in summer to escape the morning sun.

A friend and I worked at a garage sale on the Fabulous Finds on HWY 99 this weekend. She has more stuff than you can imagine, so I sat with her this afternoon and mostly just kept her company. They were really busy. I was honestly quite surprised at how busy they were. Got nothing done on the coop, but I'll have some time to finish the primer tomorrow. I need to take advantage of DH to get the pop door installed and help cut some 1/4" underlayment for the walls. It is solid wood, just very thin, and it will take both of us to run it through the table saw. Measure twice, cut once, right? I can manages smaller pieces, but not full sheets of the stuff. There is a ton I can get done before Wayne gets to the windows, so I need to get started.
