Consolidated Kansas

I have the same excitement! My chicks are scheduled March 17. It is my first time to get chicks shipped, 25 of them. They are coming from Stromberg. This week I will move my 9 week old chicks
with my laying hens. The babies will be going in my garage for the first few days so I can watch them closely. The days are getting warmer, but I am praying for rain to get this dust down! And I am so tired of this wind: one day from the North, the next from the South. It is crazy!
I'm getting the hatchery surprise box from Cackle hatchery. I will be getting between 40 and 60 birds, which could include anything from chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and guineas. This will be the first time in my adult life of owning anything but ducks/geese. I'm pretty excited but nervous as well. This will also be my first time with shipped birds and the first time I've had more than 15 birds at a time (currently have 3 geese and 4 ducks). I am a little nervous about all the "firsts" but am pretty excited about the variety that will be coming! I ordered this box because I couldn't make up my mind which breed(s) I wanted to try first, so I'm excited to get a wide variety!

We are getting closer to being ready, as well! Our chicken coop is getting closer to being done! Yesterday, we moved it to its more permanent home and hung the doors and filled in some low spots around the base of the coop. We still have a ways to go, but it is getting much closer to being usable!

Quote: I don't think I could handle all that activity. I already work from sun up to sun down and longer.
I knew you had the cattle and sheep but didn't realize you still had goats. I keep thinking of getting a hog but on the fence if I want to handle one if it keeps trying to dig out. I am now considering getting a Yak. I love them. I just need to find a market for their fiber. I am not going to spin my own wool!!!! It's a dream on the yak but again I don't have fencing for it so that would mean more fence buiding.
Quote: Your coop looks like a fortress. I'm excited for you to get the chicks. It will be so much fun to see pictures and try to tell what breeds you ended up with.

That is a lot of babies! You will do fine, especially with the help of the experts from Consolidated Kansas. I really enjoy reading the threads, you guys really know tons of things!!
It is such a great satisfaction to work and built something yourself. Your husband and you are on a roll to finish this coop!! I am with Danz: it is going to be so much fun to figure out what you got in your surprise box, better than Christmas!!

BYC sure has a huge knowledge base! I'll definitely be asking for all ya'll's help after I get the birds! i sure don't know enough about chickens to figure out the breeds on my own! There is one local poultry expert that has volunteered to help. I'm interested to see what she and ya'll think! I dreamt about chicks last night (I'm pregnant so I dream a lot more than normal). I guess you could say I'm pretty excited about the birds' arrival! I've even already told my boss to expect me to have the day off so I can make sure everyone is settled in!

II found a Cream Legbar rooster. I have it in quarantine with a silver hen. I have had the hen isolated all winter, because I was keeping her for a different Silver rooster. That is her egg in the photo. It looks like maybe I'll have another project going if I hatch her eggs. This rooster does have orange feathering, so maybe it's not a "true" Cream Legbar.

Ralph he looks like one to me. The older lines had a lot of red and his isn't excessive. I think you'll have fun creating those super blue egg layers.
I've spent all day looking for half of some hinges. How could I loss something so essential and why on earth were they not attached to the part of the hinge? This door I was working on was removed at least 8 years ago and I have no earthly clue where things like that went to. It's discouraging for sure. I found another set of nice heavy brass hinges but the pin is missing from one of those. Grrr

I really get that. Just go buy another set and put it away. The old ones will be where you go to put the new ones. I just went through that with heartworm meds and flea protector for my zoo. I KNOW I bought the stuff, but it isn't in the meds drawer. It will turn up eventually, but good grief.

These were super heavy nice solid brass hinges and this door is solid wood and weighs a ton. It would have been so nice to use those hinges. When something like this happens it makes me realize how really unorganized we are around here. I know it's bad but you would think at least like things would be together.

I can sympathize. I've had similar things happen more times than I can count!!! Not much fun!!!

I won two auctions on eBay from Chickenhill Poultry! I'm super excited about them. Their birds are amazing. I really wanted some of their BLRWs but that auction went too high. They rarely sell hatching eggs so I'm delighted to have gotten in on these!
