Consolidated Kansas

More about me ... We live on a farm near Mankato where we've been for the last 30 years and hopefully 30 more. My passion is being the best wife/mom/grandma I can be. (Wife to one, mom to 5, grandma to 18 so far.) I work as a PTA in a Nebraska nursing home, my farmer is now a full time farmer. We raise a few cattle and hogs and I have a few chickens.

I currently have 3 mixed hens from last years chicks (I just let the grandkids pick.) I lost 4 to an opossum that got in the old coop one night, one to illness and most recently 4 to a very brave, but now dead, coyote. I added 10 laying Black Australorps a few weeks ago from friends that moved to town.

Thanks for the welcome!!

I'm new to the thread!  I live near Mankato!  I would love to find some Marans chicks close by.

Welcome! I live between Ionia and Glen Elder so I am fairly close to you. I have Marans hens and a rooster. I love the dark eggs. Mine all run together in a mixed flock so I could not guarantee full blood. I do not hatch chicks normally but do let a broody have a few eggs once in a great while. I prefer to buy chicks from others and increase the diversity of my flock.

Danz you can send the rain this way. We are so dry up here. The wheat needs some moisture or harvest is going to be a sad thing.

Congrats on all of the hatches. I bought an incubator from HeChicken 1 1/2 years ago but have never been brave enough to try it. I want to so bad but haven't got the nerve up yet.

Awesome. I'm a mother of 5 as well. But only have 5 grandchildren and one great grandchild...so far. I love the farm life. I wish my DH shared my passions. He keeps saying it's time for me to slow down.
Quote: Dwink get started on that hatching. You will love it. Even if you have a lousy hatch it is probably one of the most rewarding things you can do. Think about bringing a new life into this world from a simple egg. Nothing much better than that. Give it a try and we will be here to help and support you.

Danz I don't think that I could be trusted if I started hatching. Lol. I don't do things on a small scale at all. Lol. When I first got chicks 4 years ago my dear husband agreed and gave his blessing for 5 chicks. So I brought home 8 and added 4 more the next week.

It has multiplied from there and I still want more. If I get the chicks that I am wanting from a dear lady

I will have over 10 times more than I ever intended on having. Chicken math at its finest! I need restraint, not encouragement.

Jlpkansas is your first name June?

When I got back in chickens I told my DH I wanted to get 25 and butcher the boys and save the girls for hens. Well I then decided to get a group of rare breeds along with some individual kinds. My first order was 75 chicks and then I went and bought another 25 from an individual who had cuckoo marans. (they were back ordered at the hatchery) So immediately the 25 went to 100. It was a good experience though because that is what got me started in my quest to find the chickens that fit me. Of course hundreds of breeds after that and of course thousands of dollars got me to where I am now. Maybe you have a little more restraint than I do.
Anyway I love the birds and I really love hatching. Too much for sure.

I enjoy the hatching, but it is labor intensive & I usually am really ready for a break after the spring hatching season. I don't hatch in the fall because not as many people want chicks then & I would rather use that as my break time. I do love seeing those fluffy little critters though, it's just cuteness magnified. I'm trying now to get people to come pick up their chicks since I hatched them.

Help I came out to this morning I am getting ready to go inspect everyone beside blood what else should I be looking for?

The first one appears to have yolk in it. could it be a hemorage? I would check vents, for sure, for prolapse or obvious bleeding. It isn't the right shape for an attack from a bigger predator, I wouldn't think. Any feathers around?
