Consolidated Kansas

Yeah we have had quite a bit of rain here too. It doesn't just rain for a day, it seems like it's at least two days or more at a time. It would be nice to spread it out a little & get some later when we really need it. I was out yesterday trying to catch chickens for people in the rain, it was a mess. We had a real gulley washer right as they were both supposed to come so I had to slog through mud to get them.

Trish, the English Lavenders I bought from you are doing great! It's still hard to tell what's what, but they are super docile and nice to handle. One was a bit older, if you remember, and I'm pretty sure that one is a pullet. She's our favorite. She sprawls out on her side and loves the sun. We can rub her tummy (if chickens have tummies). Anyway, thanks for the chicks, we are enjoying them. I won't be able to keep more than one boy, so if you, or anyone else here in Kansas, has any good ideas on rehoming roosters, let me know. The kids will not let them go to be eaten. Thanks again!

I'm so glad you like the chicks SidChick, they are my favorite color of the Orpingtons. It's kind of hard to re-home roosters unless you can find someone who has lost a flock rooster & needs another. I ended up giving away a really pretty Isbar rooster a couple of days ago because I needed him gone & he was too pretty & too small to eat anyway. At least hopefully he will have more room now than he had living in a rabbit hutch. That's all I had to put him in where he wouldn't get beat up by other bigger roosters.

Quick update. My sister got Slammed between two vehicles and has had one surgery. She was supposed to have another last night after being transferred to KU med but the swelling is so bad in her leg they had to postpone it. They are now saying she could lose her leg.
My sister and I are very much alike, always working and always busy. This is going to be so devastating for her even if she is able to keep her leg. I would appreciate prayers for her recovery and for pain to be as minimal as possible.

I spent the afternoon and evening with my sister. She had her third surgery. This was to allow the orthopedic surgeon to look around and form a game plan and perform a debridement. She will be having the same surgery every couple of days for some time. When they feel safe that the wound is free of infection and all blood vessels are returned to and feeding her leg then they can start reconstructing bone. Later they will be harvesting muscle and tissue to rebuild the part of her leg that was torn out. Both the tibia and fibula have spiral fractures and the ball joint going into her knee on her fibula is broken.
She will be hospitalized for a long long time and then will have to have multiple surgeries to restore tissue. If they can save the leg it will be a long long time before she will walk again.

I have so many hens wanting to be broody right now it's just insane. I don't want any more chicks so I just take their eggs. I have like 4 ducks sitting on nests as well. If they hatch them all I will be overrun with ducks. I guess we'll be eating duck later on if I can't sell them all.

My sister had another surgery yesterday and isn't doing quite as well this morning. She has so many more to go through. I wish I could be there every day.
One of my friends came down yesterday and we butchered 13 drakes. I had ordered 20 from a hatchery in January. I saved 3 drakes, so out of 20 ducklings I only got 4 ducks. That is just too off to be an accident. This is one case I could have paid a little extra for females and came out on top. I figured 50/50 but that was far from it.
One of my older ducks hatched 14 ducklings and moved them to the puppy pen.
I'm so proud of the pups. They aren't paying the ducklings any attention at all. I guess once again my method of exposing the Pyrenees to birds from birth has paid off.
I do need to get these other pups sold though. I am running out of time before my own surgery.
Hopefully tomorrow I will be moving a lot more birds. I still have to sell a ton of them. Until I get this group moved out tomorrow it's hard to count what else I have out there.
I'm going to butcher some young cockerels and probably make dog food out of them just to reduce some numbers. Not my idea of fun but it will help the feed bill. I'm working on making auto waterers and feeders but my arthritis is so flared right now it's really hard to do it.
