Consolidated Kansas

I haven't posted much for awhile, just been busy & I don't get notices much from here either. I'm trying to start getting things winterized, I wasn't at all ready for this cold front that came in. I have a few tarps on pens, but have a lot more to go & plastic for hoop coops as well. It always takes me about a week of working to get everything done. I did get my two coops cleaned out thank goodness so that's done. I have straw to get in pens yet too after I get tarps & plastic up. I hate winter!

Me too. I'm trying to move birds around and sell excess. I sure hate to butcher but it looks like there are a few that have to go. I am never ready for winter and I've been working on things trying to get them done ahead of time. Yesterday I brought in my tender potted plants but haven't gotten them fumigated yet. I sure hope I didn't bring in any critters. I haven't even thought of setting up heated bowls etc for water yet. I hope the severe cold holds off for another month.

Yeah I hear you Danz, I'm frantically trying to get tarps up & still have a lot of plastic to put up on pens. I need to change out all of my waterers as well. This cold just hit us out of the blue because it was hot for so long.

Sure glad it warmed up some but I guess the next couple of days it's supposed to get cooler but not quite as cold as it was. I really dislike this weather cause I never know how to dress.

I can't stand following a bunch of different threads that only get hit occasionally...

I'd like to form a consolidated Kansas thread and point the other Kansas threads to it- so this is the new Consolidated Kansas thread, and I'll post a link to it on the other threads.

Hooray!! Go Oz chickens!!!
I just started really looking at the site although I joined a couple months ago. I just today did my introduction and would like to link up with other close by poultry enthusiasts. I'm always looking for something new and unusual to hatch. I am from the rural Mclouth/Tonanoxie area.

You're about an hour and 15 minutes or so from me. Maybe a little more depending on your location. I have had several customers from the Lawrence area. In fact have one wanting to come this weekend. My website isn't updated at all. I've been eliminating and changing some breeds and trying to downsize as well. Just haven't gotten to updates. I'm always too busy it seems. But you can check out my website https://www.chickendanz.com
Also @Trish44 has a website as well. She is further away from me. There's lots of other people on here now and then that raise chickens or that might have something you'd be interested in. @Dani4Hedgies is raising lots of bantams and she is more in the KC area.
Welcome to the forum and tell us about yourself. Maybe some other people will jump in here and post. The thread has been less active recently than ever. It usually jumps in mid winter and spring with activity but it's just been a bad year for poultry enthusiasts. The weather has been a killer.

I agree Danz, this year has been a bummer with the weather. I live in the south central KS area & raise quite a few different breeds. I have large fowl & bantams. I do have a website as well, but I also need to update mine with new photos & such because I have been doing some changing of breeds as well for next year.

Thank you for all the good suggestions and recommendations.

I have been reading a lot about the importance of good ventilation in the coop especially in the winter. I am contemplating placing straw or hay square bales around three sides at ground level to help stop drafts from underneath. That would leave the south side open. There is the option of partially covering the hardware cloth sides with clear plastic allowing vent space along the top.

I appreciate hearing your recommendation regarding methods of keeping water thawed and am leaning toward heated dog water bowls. I have 11 birds and think that would be a good option outside the coop.

Thank you for looking up the chickshaw. I built one in June and have been using it since the first of July. The system has worked beautifully.

Hello. I have a heated bird waterer that I hang inside the coop.i cut out a hole in the floor right under the waterer. I then filed it with rocks and put hardware cloth over the hole. That way if it spills the water will go down the hole to the ground and not stay in the coop. The hardware cloth keeps critters out and the chickens in. So far it has worked well. No wet straw, ice or mildew.

Evening. I wanted to show you how beautiful that puppy that I got from you is. She is so smart and well tempered. We have only had one problem, we can’t keep her dry! She is constantly in the pond swimming! Not just sitting on the bank. My poor ducks don’t know what to think of her. Thorn and Freya get along wonderfully! Well this stupid computer won’t let me post a pic. I will try again later.
Thank you
Ricki

There you go. They are so good together!
