HI gail, My wife and I are about 8 miles just west of Ottawa between hwy 68 and I-35. Its a great choice to make the move out here. We grew up in Olathe for 30 years and when we both found that we had a love for the country it didn't take but a min for us to find a place and move. Were on 30 mostly wooded acres here with our 32 birds a cant and soon 2 horses (if I ever get this fence up)
WELCOME TO BYC!

Welcome Gail and Wolfrunner! It is wonderful to see our group expand!

A big THANK YOU to all of you that responded to my question a few days ago. The 9 week olds have been mostly out with that small warm snap, but with the pending forecast, I have brought them back to the garage. Better be safe than sorry!

OzawkieBantam - glad there was a "positive" outcome to the situation! It sounds like it will be a better experience than anything law enforcement could have done to the boys.

If it snows, I am ready. I actually wouldn't mind some white stuff on the ground...just don't want subzero temps!

I just got home from work. There's about 3 inches of snow on the ground, and it is snowing HARD right now. Who knows how much more snow we are going to get.

I've been thinking about how I am going to build my small houses for my breeder pens. The pens will be 4' x 10' so the house can't be too big. I'm going to put it on legs so they can have shade under the house and it won't cut down on square footage in the pen. I've been stressing over the project because I like to use salvaged material, and I've about used up what I have. Then I had an inspiration.

I have an old barn that was damaged beyond repair in the windstorm this summer. I can take siding off that barn (it's going to have to be torn down or it will fall down eventually) and use the siding to build my little houses. I think there may even be some lumber I can use for framing. Duh. Why didn't I think of this sooner?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting started so I can separate the hens and start saving some eggs for hatching.

Welp looks like I am snowed in for a few days. Not really sure im gonna like livin up have. If it snows two inchs here in Lake side village nobody can leave. They just now at 645am drove by as i am typing this to plow the road, good thing I dont have a job @ the time.

We have about five inches right now I have heard we in Jeff co might get 8 inches. The snow doesnt bother me, but the sub- zero temps coming do. My babies are paying for it with there lives. Im gonna go out and freeze my tail of today until I can know in my heart they with make it through this nasty stuff.

Looks like we have about 3 " here in Bonner Springs right now. Weather people say its supposed to snow for another 18 hours or 3 to 4 more inches. Wood stove stoked up, pantry is full. Just hate having to go out and let the chickens out. They dont go very far but there will be some open ground in the pen if they will walk through the snow to get at it. Great day to watch movies from Netflix

Omg. ........Man I am so frustrated right now. I just came in from out side feeding and watering my birds i now have almost ten birds showing symtoms of what I think is Mareks

This makes me mad as hell, because I have some nice rarer birds, and dont wanna loose them. Been getting three eggs aday now, but now I am in jepordy of loosing all that

Have you necropsied any to verify Marek's?

We had some paresis issues with a few birds last Summer. Necropsies showed no tumors. Had a few other issues crop up later and centered everything into a feed issue. All's well now.

Sorry. Guess I missed it. What exactly are their symptoms? Breeds? Ages?

I have been following a discussion on another forum. They mention that sometimes a mite infestation will cause mereks like symptoms. Have you checked them for mites. Just a thought.... Does Kansas have a state vet that will check them for possible diseases?

Oh, by the way, I think bantams are great little birds. I have bantam cochins, japanese, 1 seabright and some very cute little mixes. A bantam EE roo has helped add blue egg laying japanese mixes to the flock.
