The most expensive part is the charging unit itself.. Then hotwire, and insulators. Are you going with plug-in or solar bolth have there pros and cons
Solar chargers don't effect your electric bill but with my experience they don't "zap" as good especially when you get a few years on them and they must be out in the elements
The pulg-in type "zap" better and you can keep them out of the weather but if you have a power outage..well its usually not a problem once your horses are use to the fence

We run the flexible "hot" wire but I don't rember the brand "its yellow"..just stay with the recommended gauge the charging unit calls for.

I have always got mine at Orschlen's and TSC when they run a sale and they are good with honoring warranties, but I would call Dreslers in Tonganoxie, and Feldmans in Bonner springs for some pricing but the drive usually isn't worth it

*also make sure you know how many feet you need to charge when you go pricing the unit*

Thanks for the info. We have spent all the money for the barbless wire but don’t have the time nor the hands to get it installed. I'm taking every penny I can to go buy what I need to just do electric. I will one day have Goats and some cows so I'll need to also get the wire up but just for now I think going electric with be fast and easy to install! I wish that FAMILY CENTER had a website that I could get prices from but there not up to date on anything.

We have always used electric fence for our horses and goats. The only time we had any problem was when the snow drifted up over the entire fence last year. Some of the goats learned they could get through the fence then. They never went very far. Once the drifts melted we had no problem other than with one goat. She would charge under the fence and the electric fence wouldn't stop her anymore. I think she had rubber insulating hair.

She went to the auction.

I am wanting to show some of my chickens this coming year, and I was wondering if any of you are NPIP certified here in Kansas. I guess it is done state by state. The only thing I found on the internet was an application. With that you had to send $30. I believe. Does any of you know any more details about it than that? Do they just test for pullorum or do the test for AI as well? Is there a "per bird" charge? How do you find someone in your area? Do they only test once per year or do they test multiple times? Do they test every bird in the flock?

Any info would be appreciated.

The $30 is the fee for you to become a certified tester, not to become NPIP certified. Cost will depend upon whatever the person you hire to test charges you. How many birds are tested depends upon how many birds you have. Ks only requires birds to be tested for pollurum and only once per year for NPIP.

I became a certified tester last year. We've actually qualified twice over for NPIP, but I haven't requested my number for a variety of reasons.

Yes, certified testers can test their own flock. Many shows, fairs and sales offer testing at coop-in. Some free, some for $1-$2 per bird. That test is then considered good for that bird for 90 days.

I personally hate testing at coop-in and getting a tester in my area is a hassle. Since you can test your own birds, it was worth it to me to just get certified and not have to mess with it. Getting certified is a very simple process. It's all done online now. Watch the video, take the test and email it in, eh 20-30 multiple choice and true/false questions, open book. State then sends you the application for your license. Send it back with your $30 and voila, you're a certified tester in the state of KS. Pay your $30 every year to renew and that's that.

Gee whiz. That sounds simple enough. I'm sure I'm capable. I'm really interested in getting more people showing in this area so it might just be worthwhile for me to get certified.

Thanks to all for the info!

I had the State vet out to my place for my certification. He suits up in a hazmat suit and is very careful not to bring anything in- I'm soooooo paranoid if you haven't noticed...
