Consolidated Kansas

Some people go bar hopping. I go nursery hopping. I would stop at every single one if I could. I had never even heard of Vinland Valley until recenty. Has someone been keeping this a secret or something?

Last night I spent about 5 times as long as thought I would putting up poultry netting over the top of my pen where I have my new leghorns and RIR's. Is there a secret to this stuff? It is not a job for one person, especially when trying to work from a ladder. I would put a little bit up, then try to stretch it along part of one side. Too tight. Take the staples out and try again. Nope. Still too tight. Do it again. Too loose in one spot. Again. GRRRRR. Start over completely. Needless to say I was getting frustrated. All the ladies were wanting to roost before I was finished. They have been jumping up on the edge of the 6 foot chain link panels I'm using for a pen. Of course you know what happens UNDER where they roost. The chain link was starting to look like it had been smeared with some kind of frosting. Not pretty. I finally finished the project, and put up another place for them to roost INSIDE the pen. By then it was late and they had no idea what that new roost was for, even though I sat several of them up there on it. Most of them spent the night on the ground or on the little roost in front of the nest boxes.

So far they are still laying well. I thought their egg production would really drop off for a while after I brought them home, but it hasn't. I wonder if it will now since I messed up their routine with this poultry netting fiasco. I hope it didn't stress them too bad.

I'm seriously considering putting the 10 RIR's in with my marans, BO's and BJG's. It's a much bigger pen with a run, then the leghorns would be by themselves. I'll have to wait a while, though, since I've still got them all quarantined.

Oh man I cant wait. In a few hours I will have company, and these persons have one of the largest exoctic bird farms in the Lawrence area. They are coming up to look and help plan out my new Duck aviary I plan to build this spring. Truely the nicest people anyone could meet. The thought of these two takeing the time out of their busy day to come and see me a nobody in this hobbie is a real honor for me.

Hope everyone has a grand day as I know I will.

Oooooweeee!

Sounds like netting fun yesterday, and dreaming fun today!

I had a similar experience with netting. I put it up at dusk (duh!) and by myself (double duh!) and I'm cheap, so I bought a singe long piece to go over 3 runs...150' long. There aren't enough DUH!s for that nonsense. It got caught on the fences between the pens, it was too tight, too loose, gaping, tense...a real nightmare.

But once it was done, the peace of mind was priceless.

Daren, you'll have a really fun day today! Be sure to tell us all about it!

Cool. Maybe they can help you avoid a lot of the "live and learn" experiences that a lot of people have to learn the hard way! Good luck with that.

Chookschick- Yep. That sounds very familiar.

All I can say is Wow Wow..... Mr. And Mrs. Licktieg came by and it was a great great time. I am now ten chickens shy. We made a trade today that was absolutley impossible to turn down, and they brought me enough netting to cover my property twice. They are two great people. Heck I didnt want them to leave.

We laid out a area for my aviary, and they gave me so many great ideas.
Looks like I have some new freinds. They said that they plan to visit often. This is awesome.

Enjoyed visiting with CK_Dunham this afternoon! Great setup and the girls and guys have lots of room - seriously acres of room!

After talking their "legs" off in the cold this afternoon...I am hankering to talk poultry. So c'mon NorthEast Kansas BYCers, we need to get together! It's time to talk poultry or waterfowl or whatever! Let's find a date!!!

these lil' turds are laying their eggs every where. Heck I even found three of them in the pigeon coop yesterday. I would have had three dozen eggs if I had found these sooner not to mention some others I found through out the yard. Its like a easter egg hunt everyday.....lol

I bet that once the weather turns for the better we will be doing more for getting together.

It was nice meeting you all yesterday. The better half was upset that I didn't go tell her you all were there. OOPS! The birds look happy and seemed to have rested up good last night cant wait to get home today and see what all came of the flock with this nasty weather. I'll keep you informed on the frost bite and how well he heals. I'm sure he will do great.
