Consolidated Kansas

Geezzz. I thought that with this crappy weather more people would be home today with nothing better todo then be on BYC. The snow started in Ottawa about 5:30am today. Not early enough for work to keep us home.

Ouch.

I have not been able to leave my house since Sunday. I woke up at 4 am this morning, and thought " I better go get some wood an bring it in " I took one step and busted my azz hurt my shoulder bad. I cant raise my arm six inches away from my side.

Wow. I'm sorry to hear that. I know my mother did the same thing last night as she was going to her car to see the Doc. I guess she had more to show hom that way! Well I just heard on my radio that there talking about sending us all home soon! That sucks for the folks that are hourly here! As for my self it dont matter my better half works for Olathe MED and its not looking like they will close for any reason. So i'm stuck till shes off seeing that we carpool!

Sorry to hear about your fall. It is nasty here, too. I fell a few days ago. I hurt my azz but I really did a number on my knee. It took a couple days to get to feeling better.

It's difficult to walk outside. The ground is covered with ice and even the grass is hard to walk on. We live on a hill, and the wind is horrendous. It flat blows you backwards on the slick ground.

I had to go rescue my free range roosters. Their hut had blown full of snow, and several had wandered off looking for better shelter. Two had decided the stock trailer looked like a good place to hang out. I put them all in the goat barn, and three of the ones that like to pick fights got put in isolation cages. That'll teach 'em. Anyway, I think they are all okay for now.

Getting ready to sled down to the chicken coops and check out how everyone is doing! The ride down will be fun, it's coming back up that will stink!

Stay safe and warm!

boy that was a trip! Made it back. All are doing well - went to collect eggs but the girls are cuddling in the boxes! Hated to disturb them as they looked warm and comfy.

As this is our first year with chickens, I find that each storm and each season gives us more things to consider in the layout of our coops, interior design and layout, as well as the chicken run/yard. Today's blowing snow has us thinking about some windbreaks to protect doors and paths so that we can just get into the coop without shoveling our way in. Hmmm...perfect day to contemplate ideas and modifications!

The bottom of my door is about a foot off the ground.

I have to wade through a drift to get to the door of my coop, but it is up off the ground, too... lets see... two cement blocks plus another step... so about 22" up.
