.....soooooo now that I've scared the wits out of everyone about bringing in grown birds, I'm wanting to offer up my flock of Golden Lakenvelders.

I should have waited a bit to bandy about my 'Be Careful' speech, right?

So, anyway, if you or someone you know is interested, I have 4 Golden Lakenvelder pullets and 2 roos, one of whom is rumpless but has never thrown rumpless chicks. They have slate legs, not green, like you'll see sometimes, and they are a very rich golden color, not the patchy buff you'll sometimes see.

They are a good size, not bantam. They eat very little and lay like mad when in season. This is a Mediterranean breed, so they aren't likely to want to be cuddled, which is why I'm not in love with them

I like to cuddle.

I have always had very good profits selling their eggs, as they are rare, and they are very pretty, excellent foragers, very self-sufficient and not prone to broodiness.

I'll take $100 for the flock, just because I need the space...I'm desperate to not have to build another coop...they're just starting laying again after a winter break. They turned 1 on Christmas and are from 3 different flocks, so not all related.

Just found this thread, Hello Kansas
yippiechickie.gif

I live in Osage county, Nice to meet everyone.

WE finaly just moved to the country, before I kept my critters 2 blocks away from my house when I live "in town" small town. WE had 3 acres on the edge of town and since I did not live there my chickens/ducks were always geting picked off by neighbors dogs. I have been out here since June and I have not lost one chicken to predetors, My pyrs see to thet. SO I am now worming up the bator and have blue, some buff orps and looking for some really nice silkie eggs. I am also geting some seb geese and looking for some midget white turkeys and need to get a few guinies. I am also looking for a male potbelly pig if anyone knows a free or reallly cheep one.

Hiya!

If I can get my Silkies to quit eating their eggs, I'll have B/B/S and Blue Partidge Silkie eggs- very nice quality.

Glad you found the Kansas thread!!

All our Silkies are broody save for one and her beau hasn't quite got the hang of things yet.

BBS Ameraucanas are going good, can't tell on the sex linked olive eggers.

I have two more quick questions, but here's my background.

I'm building my coop inside a 6'x12' dog kennel. I'm lining the sides with wire mesh to make the holes smaller from the fence. It's also fenced across the top and bottom. I plan to build the coop off the ground to allow that extra ground area for the hens outside.

SO first question is 18" up enough? Or should I go 2'. I was thinking 18" off the ground to allow more room in side the coop. But I want to make sure that there is enough clearance outside that they will use that space.

Secondly, does it matter if the feed/water is inside the coop or not? I was also thinking about putting the feed/water under the coop. I figured I could hang it there and that would prevent a lot of pest getting it. Or do they prefer to have the food inside the coop. My only concern there is that it takes up space, and I want to make sure the hens have plenty of room inside the coop. I'm thinking the coop with be 6'x4', so if I have 6 hens, that's 4 sqft/hen inside.

I tried that once, mine was 2'. It was hard for me to crawl under it to get the chickens that would not go into the roost. Also I had a ramp that I would raise and lowered, poo and straw would get into the hinge area and bind it up so I could not close it.

Even with just that much space 6 birds will evently turn it to mud/ dirt/ nothing growing. Just save your leaves, grass clippings etc. I hang my feeder and raise the nest boxes so they can have more space if that helps.
checked with the local feed store Vally feed and they will have the hatchery guy every month starting in middle March all summer through Oct. If I can help with further dates let me know.

Thanks, and I havn't decided what yet, but I plan to put some type of cover in the run (maybe sand). And they'll be allowed out of the run and have access to the yard when I'm home.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks. In hindsight it probably wasn't the best name for this site. It was a nickname given to me back in high school, and I've just used it ever since. I use the same login for everything so I don't have to remember a bunch of different ones. So I hope it doesn't offend anyone on here
