It sounds like you are living a parallel life to mine. We bought 160 acres, 5 acres where the house is was PURE JUNK and trash! We hauled load after load of stuff out, tore down the mouse riddled house and put in a new one. One barn and part of another one blew down in a windstorm. We built a shop, replaced one barn and are getting ready to build a poultry barn. When that will happen is anyones guess. It's my priority but not my hubby's. So many irons in the fire.

I've been planting trees, a small orchard and vinyard, and I have just been getting started on the garden. Hopefully we will be able to raise a lot of our own produce. We certainly have enough eggs, and we have a few goats we milk, too.

Trying to be more self-sufficient is not necessarily a simple life. It's lots of hard work, but worth it!

New here from Hoyt, KS. Just finished building a coop and run and picked up 17 hens of various types/ages this past weekend. Just moved to Kansas a few months ago - as soon as I fond my digital camera, I'll get some coop pictures up.

We are looking to add some Silkies to our flock. Any leads on where to find some young ones in Kansas would be appreciated. Also, any info on shows/swap meets, etc. where we can get more would also help.

Wow, so many Kansas sunflowers here! There's not too many that are active on the Self Sufficient forum.

Ivy, yes we are living parallel lives! The first year we owned our place, we hauled off loads and loads of junk appliances, tore down the old mouse, termite and snake infested (according to DH) house, repaired wells, etc etc. We moved into our new place as soon as we had one room that had drywall - didn't even have our permanent heat in yet and it was January 15th. We kept the old milk barn and hay shed, tore down another building and the silo. We built the coop and run three years ago, yahoo! I really enjoy the birds...and the eggs!

I see a common thread here with many of us. I'm still hauling off junk and have a huge metal pile that needs recycling but instead of getting it hauled away we keep building more chicken houses and pens.
My difference I guess is, I am trying to remodel the old mouse and rat infested house and make it something decent. Land was so pricey when I bought, that there was no room in the budget for building anything new. If I would reduce my bird numbers I might be able to afford to build a garage or something that would be usable.
But I love my birds.
Kids are grown and have their own kids. The problem with this so called self sufficient life is that when you finally get to the age to pursue it, you are too old and tired to get every thing done. I love it just the same.

Do you guys have a calendar of local poultry shows in Kansas? I haven't been able to find this information anywhere.

Ivywoods: the BCM is doing good. We have named her Agnes. She is giving me an egg almost every day. My alpha girl "Henny Penny" died, so Agnes is now the Queen of the flock. She runs with my Silkie roo. How are your BCM doing? Are they looking better? Is it molt? Agnes has started losing a few feathers around her neck and on her back, but I figure this may be from the Silkie.

to the new Kansas folks. I am sorry I have not been on more. Had a great family friend shoot himself in the hand with a 9mm hollow point and I have been running around trying to help him with his dog and cat and then do my own projects which includes new chicken pen, patio, play house for grand daughters. This does not include switching rooms since our roommate moving out and giving my grand daughters their own room. Plus the farm that we where storing some stuff on was sold so I had to get everything out and moved last weekend. So I have missed a bunch of post on here. I hope everyone is doing great and all projects are going smoothly.
