Okay- so I have a non-coop question! I've been reading all the horror stories about sick chicks and sick chickens. Got me to thinking... my turkey was sick a few weeks back and I don't know for sure what it was. Vet thought it might be heat related, but also could have been a disease of some kind. I was on vacation when it happened, so I don't know the exact symptoms, except that my mom said watery poop and didn't want to eat or drink. Of course- it was a really, really hot day too. She was on Baytril for 2 weeks and hasn't had a problem since. Although I have noticed when she gets really hot and stressed- she will have a watery poop. Could she have had something that could be passed on to my baby chicks (when they arrive). Is this something i should worry about? She was probably about 2 weeks old when I 'got' her- and I think I had her about 2 or 3 weeks before she got sick... so that is her history.
 
Funny. I'm reading this about cookies as payment while the smell of fresh baked mm cookies is wafting through the kitchen where my wife and son are baking. I wonder how many cookies it would cost me to get a 10 acre spread somewhere?

When they reach about 5 days old start checking their butts. I used to wash mine off in warm water but now I just pull it off. It removes the feathers (or rather, the fluff at that stage) but it also has nothing else to stick on in the following days. I keep vaseline in my brooder to dab on their behinds should they start developing any as well. Any kind of stress can cause pasty butt.
 
oh- don't talk about root beer floats! I am seriously addicted to Sonic's floats! I have one or two nearly every week! Root beer is my FAV brown drink!!

Okay- so tonight those silly posts that I left on the other side- they had to go! They have been slowly coming out of level and tonight I had HAD it with them. Whacked them off and I will build a pony wall along there instead. Sigh. Oh! and I'm so excited- I figured out the angles for the roof/braces for the nest boxes!! YAY!! I did exactly what you gals told me to do and just put the board next to it and draw a line and cut it. Fits on there perfect!! I mean- perfect!!!! That could not have gone any better. So I have some more work to do. My husband tried to help me do the plywood, but when we couldn't work around it because of those darned posts, we got carried away with other things. So I'm stuck waiting for him to come back home on Friday. His plane leaves at 7am.

But I'm hopeful I can get someone wrangled to help me. Or... I don't know, maybe I can do it.

Chicken Danz- I sure hope it was heat related for my turkey. I have a feeling it was. I mean, if it were that coccyx (whatever?!) disease- wouldn't she have had to catch that from another bird? She hasn't been around a bird since I got her. I just want my new babies to be healthy. I still have another month to worry about what to do for them, so I'll try not to stress. ha!
 
I have a question for any Lawrence area people. I've been looking for corrugated tin roofing. Where the hay ho can I get it? HD didn't have it and I couldn't find any at the TSC. Am I totally blind?

I make sure I have beverages...it's a safe word.

I have read several pieces that said that chickens drink extra when it's hot out not only to replenish the moisture lost when they pant, since they can't sweat, but also so that when they have massive, watery poops, they expel the heat contained in that poop and can drink cool water to decrease their core temps.

I know mine drink a ton and have watery poop whenever it's hot out.
