Consolidated Kansas

Arrrgghh. I think my EE has bumblefoot. She has dark spots on the bottoms of both feet and her feet are swollen (not red). I want to try the Tricide-neo powder/bath treatment. The idea of cutting open her feet just horrifies me. does anyone know any place in the ne Kansas area (I'm from the Emporia area) where I can buy Tricide-neo powder? Of course I just noticed her swollen feet this evening and no one is open to call. sigh. Of course, she is my favorite chicken.

I recently dealt with a hen that had a bumblefoot. I used antibiotic ointment-bacitracin for the infection, some gauze wrap followed by some vet wrap. I changed the dressing twice a week at first, then once a week for several weeks. (I can't remember just how long I did it.) Anyway, I don't think her bumblefoot was really bad or else I caught it early. She healed up well and has not had a problem since. I could see just a tiny black spot on the bottom of her foot, so it must have been some type of sharp puncture wound that started the bumblefoot.

There are several good threads on here with pictures to help show how to deal with bumblefoot. I certainly wouldn't start with an invasive method such as excising the lesion to begin with. Go conservative and see how that works. If it doesn't you can always try the more severe treatment after that. BTW, I've read that bumblefoot carries a 50% mortality. I'm glad my little hen made it without too much problem.

Hawkeye-Wow! That must have been a pretty strong wind. Don't ya just love Kansas wind?....not. Sorry about your buildings and your mom's car. What a bummer, but aren't you proud of your coop? It isn't even finished and it survived a windstorm. Congrats on that, girl. Also, it sounds like the Colorado trip would have been pretty nice. Hope the tourist traffic wasn't too bad. I can remember being caught for HOURS in traffic in that area in August due to the increase in tourists then.

Danz- Wow! That was quite a drive for you to Topeka just to have people back out on the deal. Bummer. I used to take my birds to a swap meet in Salina when we lived near Solomon. We hatched quite a few, so I sold a lot at that swap meet. I don't remember bringing any of them home with me. We always had good luck there. Sometimes we came home with a few things, but they were animals we bought from other sellers while we were there. One year we picked up a trio of bantam partridge wyandottes from an APA judge that my son ended up with Grand Champion the next year, even though the trio we bought were the "second" pick, and showed against his first pick. Just goes to show that how you take care of them makes a world of difference.

Manhattan area? I love the Manhattan area. Right now I have 2 sons as KSU, so it gives me a good excuse to go to Manhattan to visit.

I'm calling as soon as they open this morning. I agree they have quite a selection. They are closed on Sundays, though, so I couldn't do that yesterday. Worried about her all night.

I hope the drug works and you don't have to go cutting her foot open. I've looked at the pictures of someone cutting a chicken's foot open before and then having to soak and squeeze the plug out- No Bueno! I just don't think I'd want to hurt her any more than I'd have to. I hope the drug works instead!

We're getting a bit of rain this morning. Nothing much.. just a bit of a sprinkle, and i bet in a couple of hours, won't even be able to tell it did anything at all.

Thanks Hawkeye, I am calling Bluestem when they open in about 5 minutes. If they don't have it, I'll try the pet store (he specializes in fish), and if that doesn't work, I'll order it online.

I'm with you. I don't want to cause her any more pain.

She is the EE that is losing feathers around her neck. She was attacked by a little dog (mine) about 6 weeks ago, and he pulled out some feathers -- no bleeding, no observable damage except the feather loss. Shortly after that, the other hens (at least I assume it was other hens, I haven't observed the behavior) started pecking out more feathers -- again, not pulling them out, just breaking off -- to the point that she is looking like a turken

She is eating and laying as usual, and I didn't notice the foot thing until I was sitting in the run with them, and her feet looked swollen. I picked her up and looked and her feet were too warm and there were the telltale black spots on the bottoms of both feet. I feel like such a bad chickie mom. Why didn't I notice it sooner? The spots are maybe 3/8 inch across and right on the pad of her feet.

Well, it is too late to find it early, so I'll have to do what I can. Off to call Bluestem.

Yeah, not really a fan of our wind when it destroys.

But to be honest, the Redwood playset isn't that heavy of a set. It might be all made of wood- but those sets are made of thinner wood. And the shed- it was nearly new. We had only had it for 2 years. It was one of those kits you buy at Lowes and set it up. We had poured a cement pad for it and bolted it into the cement. But the wind was too much for it. The horse barn and the rest of our trees were okay. Our neighbors lost shingles on their roof- they need a new roof now. And the guy next to us had two large cottonwoods uprooted and one fell on his fencing. I don't think his horses will be getting out, though- the tree is HUGE and blocking the hole it made. Anyway, I AM really happy that my coop held up! What a trial for it though... I'd rather not do that again. LOL! But like i said, I am going to go buy some metal braces and see if I can't reinforce it anyway- just in case we have something a little 'stronger' come thru.

OH- and don't know if this will work, but we set up our uprooted pine tree- one side of the roots were still in the ground, the other side got torn up. I'm hoping if i stake it up on 3 sides, keep it well watered and fertilize it with root stimulator... maybe it will be okay.

Probably wishful thinking... but won't know 'till I try.

Welcome!! I used to live up there! Lived in Jardine (KSU housing). Used to LOVE Vista Burger and having picnics near the dam on Tuttle Creek.

Hawkeye, I'm so sorry about your damage. I think most of the weather skirted us other than it blew two of my pens that had tarping on them several feet. I think the tarps acted as lifts for them. They were modular pens I could move. We still got very little rain. Darn it!
I don't think your house will go anywhere. With all the weight and the posts in the ground it should stay put.
Congrats to your DH.
To others, I had a very disappointing day. I have been negotiating with a guy for some Seramas for a couple months. I made a special trip to a swap meet in N. Topeka this morning just to sell him the Seramas he requested. He avoided me until I finally walked up to him at the end of the meet when he was leaving. He said they weren't as small as he expected. I had chosen the colors he wanted and got him ones that were good breeders. The DA had no idea what he was dealing with or he would have known more about the breed and what to look for. Anyway I sold him one pair for $10 after making a trip for a special group for $40 thinking it would pay for my gas. Had I not sold a bunch of guineas at a giveaway price it wouldn't have even paid for my gas. My DH was mad at me for selling the guineas so cheap but I needed the room and had to pay for my trip somehow. Never again. I'm done making special trips for people to make deals unless they are someone I've dealt with before.
I also scored a trade with OzawkieBantams who wasn't there, through Kansaskid. He called him on the phone so that was 6 pheasant I didn't have to bring home.
Just when I believe in human nature some jerk reminds me it might not be a good idea. I've been to that N. Topeka swap two times and both times I ended up getting dished. Think I'll avoid that one at any cost.

I drove by on the way up to our old place but did not stop. It looked like it had a good turn out.
