There is some people near Garnet, I think maybe it is Mount Ida who butcher chickens for like
$1.50 or so a piece. I am sorry but I have no idea what their name is. Everyone just says they know where to go. You might ask at Orschlem's. Someone there might know. I only have three I need to butcher or I'd be making the trip myself.

Good job, Hawkeye. One question. Are you putting roofing on your nest box and your storage area? Looks like the runoff will fall on them. I wish I'd put guttering on my hen house. I had to go in and put gravel around the base to keep from having a ditch there from the run off.
Ivywoods, This place had 70 years worth of junk on it. Unfortunately it still does. I got all the metal moved to a pile so we could sell it but the pile is still there. Between the dogs, the birds and our projects our yard looks like Sanford and Son. Too many projects and no energy to put things away. I would so love to have a new house but I have to deal with slowly remodeling this older one.
My corn got cut last night. My renter told DH that he thought he would just have it stored and I could use what I need when I had my feed mixed. I certainly don't like that idea. I would much rather have the money because I use very little corn in my feed. I only use about 2600 pounds of corn a year. I could use the money for my third much better. Of course DH doesn't deal with any of that stuff. The land and house and chickens etc are mine. He doesn't have any idea how I manage it.

I know there is a butcher on the south side of Paola (going out of town). I know the street is called Silver but dont know if name changes further south. Try calling them and if they dont do it, maybe they can point you in a direction. The other poster has a good suggestion on calling a feed store. Call the Paola Family Center too.

we need to process some too. We go the quick and easy route. Skin them! The tough parts go into homemade chicken stock.

good luck!

I've never used them, but it's like $2.25 per bird, a little more if you have them sectioned and put on trays rather than just in bags. They are USDA inspected.

I'm thinking about a trip down with my extra roos, too! You have to leave them there for at least 4 hours.

I meant to post this yesterday.

We went to Topeka to Lowes on Sunday, and they had the good shade cloth on sale for half price. When I was trying to find the beige last summer, it was impossible to find and $24 for 15 ft. Now it is about $13, and the big 40 ft. roll is 26 or 27 (not sure, I don't have the receipt). It is back in the garden center just to the side of the east door from the main store on a rack.

I'm not affiliated with Lowes in any way, just glad to find a bargain.

I found a nice little farm 8 miles nw of manhattan I wish I could afford. It's 25 acres with an older house and 70' moble home the women that lived there taught art classes out of. It also has 7 other good sized out buildings. They want 195,000 for that and there is another 17.5 acres with it but I'm not sure what they want for that, I think 68,000. It would be perfect for what I want to do.

Just wait a tiny bit. I have a feeling real estate will fall in Manhattan soon. With the cut backs at Fort Riley there is going to be some property for sale. My son works for the Corp of Engineers at Ft. Riley and my daughter in law is a contractor for the army. They are cutting jobs and in her case cutting the wages. With a masters degree her salary stinks. Now they are talking maybe transferring my son to Washington State to work. They just had a new home built in Manhattan a year ago and things aren't looking promising for real estate if they cut as many jobs as predicted.

There's a gorgeous heritage farmhouse on 69 acres with a huge barn, a milk house, several outbuildings, an arbor, and unbelievable location just 8 miles outside of Lawrence...if only I had $400K lying around.

*sigh*

That's good to know, AND I know them! Garnett is only about 10 miles from me. I'm thinking about raising some chickens for meat in the spring, but don't want to learn to process them unless I absolutely HAD to.
