I did not know this, and we pre-paid for tickets last year . And so I went several times last year, took some extra family too. Had a great time.

yep, every year it's the first Friday of the fair and it's free before 10am. But I'd get there a bit on the early side to be sure you get in.

We haven't paid to get into the fair since ---- well, I'm not sure we've EVER paid to get in! LOL

I haven't been to the state fair since we moved up north here. I do miss it. Hawkeye, I'll bet you spend quite a bit of time in the poultry barn. It's a good place to learn a few things. Have fun!

We're all leaving here at 8am. Yes, I do spend a lot of time in the poultry barn, but I always have! Since I used to show the WCB Polish, I always have to hunt them down and take a look at them. So far, the last few years, none of them have been as nice as what my dad used to raise. I keep hoping some year they will be super nice birds and now that I am going to have a coop- I'd love to get in touch with who ever raises them and get some from them. My parents always come with us to the Fair- and every year he is far too critical of them. They had some really nice silver laced ones last year that were gorgeous- I'm starting to grow more interested in them, they really are pretty. They were much nicer than the WCB ones. I imagine my dad won't have much to say about my hatchery polish I am getting. I haven't told him yet! ha! At this point- I'm not planning on showing, I just am having fun.

I love the horse barn, too. I showed in trail classes and western pleasure. I also ran barrels at the rodeos around here. I had a great childhood- my dad made sure we got to do everything we were interested in. ETA-- on second thought, I should say everything HE was interested in! LOL!!!

From my view that looks a bit ulcerated. Is it a growth looking thing or is it a dent?

It is slightly raised. Definitely not a dent. Sorry that picture is very blurry but the little brat won't hold still. Could it be something else?

In my experience wounds on chickens turn black as they heal. That doesn't black from the picture. Clarify if I'm wrong. From what I can see I have no idea what it is. Darn! That's a first! Me without an opinion!

Do what I did and get yourself a Brinsea Ecoglow (I got 2!) for your brooder. You use 18w vs. 100-250w, and it's safe, won't burn out, cleans easily, doesn't require rigging...can't say enough about this.

Each covers about 20 chicks, and they make a bigger unit, too. Katy was saying something about a sale recently- check on it!

I use a brooder I made when the weather is cold but this spotty weather is really hard to work around. I would have to buy some of the bigger units to even begin to reach my demand.
I might consider it though to use during sketchy weather.

I got a huge egg from my Delaware yesterday.

She may be walking a bit funny today. The thing is 6" around and over 3.25 inches long. I don't have a gram scale that is very accurate, but it reads just under 4 oz on my diet food scale.

Here's a better pic. He's a feisty one and is hard to get a hold of. I'm thinking about pulling him from the coop tonight to iodine and clean or maybe just isolate since he's flogged his last ten year old. I was gonna eat him if it was just pox.

But now I'm worried. His black spots started as mostly black with a bit of white crust. I assume it was like a human scab progression where you'll sometimes end up with a similar white scab. And it has progress from mostly black to this. I really wasn't worried because I thought they were just fighting.

My other roo has a couple of scratches, but today he also has a round black scab with a little white crust, as do two of my hens. Again, my hens fight more than the roosters and some of them have scratches. We DO have really bad mosquitoes right now. Should I pop over to the emergency/issues section?

I did end up ordering 2 from Strombergs and I got them yesterday...just in time to use for my hatch. I ordered from Stromberg's and not Brinsea (where they were on sale) because even tho they weren't on sale there they don't charge shipping so it was basically the same price. I think it was 3 dollars more, but I've always had very quick shipping from them and I was hoping they'd get here by the time this latest hatch was hatching which they did.
