Hey Chooks. Good to see you back. I hope you are doing well. Hopefully you are doing ok with your family situation. Again I would like to extend my sympathies.

Danz, it didn't go over so well when I confronted my own neighbor (very nicely, I might add) about his dog coming over and growling at me and my kids in my OWN yard! He just told me, okay, well, if she's a problem, shoot her! ACK!! So he made it MY problem once again. Took no responsibility. That was a few years ago, and to this day we have to be careful out there. Now when I ride my horse down the road I try to run his dog over. hehehee!!! His dog comes charging out at me, but my horse loves to kick dogs and she doesn't get upset about being chased. She can sit and spin, so I can really go after his dog. He's seen me, but never said a word. I don't do it when he's out there.

Or so I thought.

I'd def talk to him and ask him if HE has any ideas about what to do with his dog. See if he can keep her kenneled up in his yard at least until say... 8 or 9am?? Whatever it takes you to get out there and get your eggs before the dog comes over.

Hi, guys- sorry about the message box- I have a zillion posts in there that I need to find a way to catalog and delete...or get the platinum again. Email me and I'll get to you!

I'm as sick as a dog, but it has forced me to sit still so I'm catching up a little bit on here.

I'm splitting the birds up again- while I was out of town they got all mixed up, so sorting will commence tonight. Should have pure eggs in a month for all in wait.

Hope you guys are taking advantage of the nice weather and getting ready for the cold!

I've been watching something for the last several days that just amazes me. I don't think I've read about this but I am sure it isn't anything that doesn't occur. There is a marans hen that likes laying in DH's shop. But here is what I think is awesome: Everyday when she gets ready to lay she stands outside the shop door and clucks until my silver laced polish rooster comes running. When he gets there then they both go inside. She goes to her spot on top of a couple of plastic shopping bags and lays her egg. Until she is done and gets up to leave he stands right beside her and guards her. When she is done (sometimes she sits there for an hour or longer after she lays), then she walks out and he follows behind her.
I know roosters tend to protect a flock, but it is almost like they have a monogamous relationship and he feels he needs to protect her while she is "giving birth"

Sounds like you have partners in crime there danz, that is very interesting. Hawkeye I would have no problems with a dog that was threatening my kids especially with owner permission. I'm a dog lover but... If anything else they make less than leathal shotgun loads that will make sure a dog dosn't return (bean bags, flash bangs, ect.) for like $15 for 3. If it was my kids though I would have no problems using leathal force on a visous farm dog.
And I guess I couldn't stay away

I don't think I could kill a dog unless it threatened one of my kids or one of my pets. Then it is a no brainer. I had some bird shot in a 357 shell that would be great. But the bullets are so old I don't know that I'd trust them. I don't own a shotgun. Back in the early 70's my brother in law sent home a couple of commemorative 30-30's. My mother in law's dogs came over and were swallowing my half grown chickens whole. I grabbed one of those guns (It was small like a BB gun so I didn't know what to expect.) I shot one of the dogs and it blew it's head, one leg and a shoulder completely off of the dog. I was so grossed out by it!
I guess the worst part was when my brother in law got home from Vietnam he was really ticked that I had shot one of those guns. The metal on one was silver and the other was gold. When I think what they would be worth now I can't even imagine. Of course the gold one isn't as valuable cause some dumb broad fired it at a dog!
