Consolidated Kansas

Yeah I have some customers and one restaurant I deliver to. Lately I've not been able to fill my orders. The pullets are starting to do a little better now though. It takes them a while to get going. These gals need to start earning their keep!
There's definitely no profit in selling eggs! But at least it is a little money. I charge the same year round regardless of the market price in the store. That way I keep my customers. I could charge more for farm fresh free range eggs but why mess up a good thing?
I usually spend $3-$4 of it when I leave town on a Mocha Java Chiller. I make that a mid day boost. Fills my late afternoon coffee and my sugar fix all in one!
So...Do all of you have favorite soup recipes that you make when the weather cools? I love making soups, big full hearty ones. They seem to warm you from the inside out. I've been looking at fall recipes this morning. When it gets cool I always feel like baking.

Well did all of my chores and it's still a bit cool so came back in for a bit. Yeah, I make a couple of soups that are yummy! I make a ground beef stew. I brown one pound of ground beef and then toss it in a big pot. Then I start adding tomato sauce, sweet corn, green beans, sliced carrots, cubed or sliced potatoes, and then throw in a packet of the beef stew seasoning. I pour in just enough water to cover it all without making it too soupy. I like it on the thicker side and cook it a while with a lid. I used to do it all fresh, and now that I'm always cramped on time, I just put in one can of each veggie I listed.

I also make a homemade chicken noodle. I boil bone in chicken in a big pot and add a few cubes of chicken bouillon to help the flavor. Then I remove the chicken (keep the water) and debone it all. Throw the chicken back in, and then add a couple bags of those thick Reams Egg Noodles to it. I toss in a bit of basil, salt and pepper and call it good. Oh, but I do mix cornstarch in a separate cup and pour in just a bit of cold water, mix it well and pour it in to thicken the soup up.

I also love making potato soup. Mine is really fast and easy. Cube up potatoes, boil them, throw in a bag of instant potatoes to thicken it up, and toss in Velveeta cheese to make it nice and cheesy. Easy and fast... but good! I used to put in bacon, but got out of the habit since it takes so long to cook it and it's a mess. Now, I'm wondering if I can just use Bacon Bits or something! LOL

Anyway, those 3 soups are my winter "go to" soups. So yummy!

ETA-- yep, I'd be using my egg money on a nice cappuccino at my downtown coffee shop! ha! I spend a lot of time in there anyway. I think that is neat that the restaurants are concerned about using farm fresh eggs!! Good for them!!!

I made Santa Fe soup last night. 1 lb ground beef browned, 1lb of Velveeta, 1 onion, 1 can of peeled diced tomatoes , 1 can of rotel, 1 can of corn and 2 cans of ranch beans. Do not drain veggies or beans. Dump all ingredients in the crockpot or large pot and heat until hot and cheese is melted. Serve with tortilla chips. to I cook the onion in my meat while browning it because I don't like raw onion but you could just chop it and dump it in too. It is a big family favorite. We also love chili, potato soup, and chicken and dumplings. My kids are picky eaters so we don't try to many new things around here.

It is wonderful! You should give it a try! We eat it all the time in the winter!

TNT I make the same soup only I just use rotel, no canned tomatoes, and I use creamed corn instead of whole kernal corn.
Hawkeye, I make a hamburger stew that is great and quick also, only I use mixed frozen veggies. chopped onion, can of tomatoes, add bullion, and instead of potatoes I always put barley in it. I LOVE LOVE LOVE barley in soups. I also like all my soups thick.
I recently made a chicken soup that turned out great. I boiled a whole chicken. (One of my own I butchered.) Removed the bones and skin. Added chopped onion and a little green pepper. Added some bullion, sliced mushrooms, celery, a package of frozen stew veggies, chopped a little finer than they come in the bag, a can of green beans, a little frozen corn, frozen baby limas and a can of tomatoes. I threw in just a tad of cajun seasoning to give it a little spark. It was wonderful. Kind of a chicken veggie soup.
The fall treat I always had around when my kids were home was hot spiced cider. I bought one of those big automatic 30 cup coffee makers and used it just for cider. It was operating all fall. The kids loved it after school, after games, for breakfast, etc but was also very nice to serve if someone stopped in. I've never shared this recipe with anyone but am going to step out on a limb and let you guys have it if you PM me. You of course don't have to keep it going all fall and can warm it by the cupfull but it is better if it sits warm and the flavors blend. It's great for special occasions too.

I make soup. The recipe depends on what is in the refrigerator.

My family all loves venison soup.
Venison chopped into small cubes or ground.
Mix of veggies, your preference.
Diced tomatoes
A big onion.
Barley
Beef base added to the broth
S&P
a bay leaf (take it out when it's done)
A few taters

I also make chicken noodle, chile and potato

Just came in for a break. I got all my new cage cups installed on my cages I built. It took more modification than I had planned but is working nice. I got my decorative rooster nailed to the side of the cage, and my rooster bell installed on the outside of my layer pen. I've always been miss "functional-utilitarian" but these little decorative touches add more than I realized. I love them. Hawkeye, your little bell you bought was my inspiration to do something like that, so when my sisters and I found two at a flea market, my sis grabbed one (she saw them first!) and I got the other one.

All my new chickies are settling in and doing well. I was worried about the new seramas because it got down to about 30 degrees last night, so I went out between midnight and 1am. and put a cookie tin water heater in their pen. It has a very low watt bulb, so it doesn't get too hot. They were not huddled or stressed, but the one littlest pullet was trying to push in under a rooster like he was her broody mama. One rooster wasted little time hopping on top of the cookie tin to warm his feet. I don't know if it made them feel any better, but it made me sleep better. They are so adorable, and I love their little sweet talk.

I also brought home a rosecomb cockerell to diversify some of my line. That little guy is a freak. He has not settled down yet. He seems wilder than my guineas! I can't open the door without him flying at the door trying to get out. I've held him more than any of the others trying to calm him down, but no dice. I'm going to put a pullet or two in with him and see if that helps him feel more secure.

edited for stupid spelling.

I see we have another thing in common, Ivy, that Barley in soup. It is just the best. And like you I tend to throw whatever I can find in soup. I do always keep a supply of frozen veggies for emergency recipes though.
My seramas didn't seem to notice the cold at all last night. I really need to get some wiring done in their house though cause it is the only one I don't have wired so I can heat it. I'm glad yours are settling in. I think the more attention you give them the better you will like them. They do really love attention once they get used to it. I really am wanting to get my numbers down and just keep several breeders. I found a little spotted hen like that one roo you got with the leg band this morning. Must be one of his offspring. I think I'll be sure to keep that one because the coloring is so different. The Seramas are the only chickens that are laying like crazy right now. Not really wanting to hatch them right now. I guess I could make a 15 egg omelet out of some of them! It would take at least that many! I did want to thank you for the business too!
The rest of you have got to see this cast iron rooster she got. It is adorable! Maybe even nicer than the dinner bell. I would love to have a couple of them. Take some pictures, girlfriend!
I got my duck diapers in the mail yesterday so I get to take those to town and put them on my Mom's duck. I'm so excited to see how they look.

LOL! Yes, I love the barley, and I always keep some on hand. I always fixed a "kid's choice" dinner for the kids when they had birthdays. My daughter always chose "V-V" soup. That was vegetable-venison. She loved it.

My oldest son wanted ribeye steak, cooked on the grill and morel mushrooms, breaded with western star seasoned flour and fried in butter.
