If you didn't find any parts of the chickens it probably wasn't raccoons, they only eat parts & leave the rest. It sounds more like a coyote if they carried the whole bird off or even a fox. The possums usually eat out the insides & leave the outside of the bird.

I did go hunting over the the weekend and found sex links feathers about 1/4 mile down the railroad tracks, but I can't understand how a coyote would get in. I have small square 6 ft livestock panels with chicken wire all the way around. I can see no evidence whatsoever of entry/exit except feathers outside the pen. Am I stupid - will a coyote shimmy over the top? Everything thing else but my ducks have a fully covered top.

I am left with one nice looking BCM pullet - but she's still too scared to talk

. 5 in one evening? Surely it had to be more than 1 of something?

Yeah, raccoons leave a heck of a mess. They tear birds to pieces. Possums sit and eat on them. Bobcats will sit and watch and watch and then come in and grab one and drag it to the woods or where ever it is comfortable consuming it. A pack of dogs will terrorize them and leave a pretty big mess. Coyotes will generally grab them and run off.

Ok, I haven't ever seen Bobcats, but shouldn't rule them out. I'm sure they could get over the top. The guy I bought them from as day olds makes live traps, but he's out of town for a few days.

Even though the guy I bought mine from keeps chickens, pigeons, quail, etc in town, and another guy I know has a whole building full of rabbits, who do I contact to check out local ordinances on things like keeping chickens in town?

Depending on the size of the town you are in there are a number of different people you can contact. What town are you in? There are people on here that might know right away what the regulations are for your town, such as whether you can keep any or not, how many and whether roosters are allowed.

You can call the city manager's office, animal control, your local police might know what the ordinances are and there are probably others.

Sorry about your loss! We lost a bunch of chickens early this fall from a dog. It was awful.

I do have exciting news! It's day 21 and I have eggs wiggling! These r my eggs from ivywoods! Can't wait to see them! The araucanas are shaking their eggs. The big leg horn eggs are still. I h kinda worried I messed it up but hopefuly not though!

Danz- I hope your surgery goes well and you are back on your feet in no time. I will be praying for a great surgery and a speedy, uncomplicated recovery.

Be patient with those leghorn/marans eggs. Marans can be notoriously slow to hatch. Also, larger eggs sometimes take longer to hatch. On the other hand, bantam eggs can hatch several days sooner than 21 days. Good luck with them. I hope you get a good hatch.

Yeah waiting is so nerve racking! I'm not good at it but I am on lockdown so I just peek through the window a lot! Lol.

I live in desolate, dry, western part - Scott City. I first thought for the winter I could, ummm....fly under the radar, so to speak. I never thought I would be out at 10pm at my age setting up a trail cam.
