So funny!! And what do you have to lose by using old meds? Nothing in my opinion! I keep them, too!! It might just save a life when you have nothing else on hand. Very smart.

It could be great party entertainment if you didn't mind abusing a cat. Almost as amusing as adding bourbon to their milk!

Let's just say I did some strange things when I was younger for entertainment. Never meant to hurt anything however a drunk cat is the funniest thing!

When I was growing up, my family went through a period of time where we could not afford much at all. Very broke. The working broke-- both parents worked, but you know. Anyway, our German Shepard loved to chase cars and she got hit. Broke her back leg. Mom couldn't afford to take her to the vet, so they set it themselves and then gave her whiskey every day for about 2 weeks for the pain. Now, THAT was a drunk dog! heh. Poor thing, she healed fine and went on to chase many, many more cars. She died at 18 yrs of age. Oh, and BTW, they tried everything to keep her in. We had a chain link fence, but she'd dig under, and then they put electric around it and that kept her in for a long while. Then she decided to just grin and bear it and go thru it. Finally had to keep a chain on her most of the time, which was very sad. But that wasn't until many years later. And even at that, not all the time. Darn dog was an escape artist. I'm not a fan of cats. Just don't like them.

You've said that before. I used to think I didn't like them either until one special cat raised my children. He was the ultimate of perfect. I don't like strays or feral cats but love my old cats who are in their teens. I keep saying when they pass I won't have any more but I probably will always have at least one around to keep the mice population out of the chicken coops and around the house. I guess I like all animals other than raccoons, possums, and other predators.

Hawkeye, that was quite interesting about the injections in the sinus, however I'm not sure I could do that & chickens don't like you messing with their heads either. I guess I'll just have to stick to things I can put in their water. I can't see myself injecting 21 chickens anyway. Even if you isolate one or two when they're sick I feel like the others have all been exposed, so then I feel that I have to treat them all. You have to figure that by the time you see symptoms they have all been exposed, just like humans.

Well I have always had cats around my whole life, I don't think I would know how to act without some around & they sure do take care of all of the mice so we don't have to deal with them. Otherwise I think we would be over run with them, they do that job well.

Perhaps if it were a super nice cat that didn't bite, scratch or pee on things.

My friend has two cats, and they pee on everything in her home. They also love to fake you out on thinking they are happy and serene... and then reach out and scratch you when you sit next to them. I wasn't trying to sit next to them and cozy up, just sitting down is all. Perhaps they just hate me.

Maybe I should meet your cats, change my mind. hehe! But I've always had bad experiences with them.

Well, to be honest, we have a neighbor cat that is practically ours. I don't feed it, but it nearly lives in our barn. It catches birds, mice, anything it can get a hold of. I leave it alone, and he leaves me alone.

There is also another cat I see time to time in our barn, too-- so there is always a cat around. They aren't mine though, and they know they should go home if they want kibble. Every now and then, the calico cat will get in my garage and leave foot prints all over my windshield or nap on my hood. That one meows at me, and sits there staring me down.

I don't really understand them.

I'm into feeling prepared, so I like to read up on everything that I think I might need to know or use as reference for doing something else. So while, I'm not going to start injecting into the sinuses... it's good to know that it is possible and does a better job of treating. I agree on the theory that if one is sick, they all probably are.

But I'd probably try to isolate them and wait and see if the others come down sick, unless I thought it was serious.

You need to come to my house and meet Tyggy. She loves everyone. I think the only cats that normally pee on everything are males that didn't get neutered early. I wouldn't like a biting scratching peeing cat either. My other two old cats are total loves as well but they are nervous around most strangers and go hide. I have a younger adopted one who loves attention as well but she is a bit too hyper for my taste. My only problem is I hate the cat box and I hate the furr on everything. It is my own fault though. I guess I don't have to keep them as primarily house cats. But they are so old it just isn't fair to subject them to staying outside. The younger one spends a lot of her time outside hunting which is good.
My cats like babysitting the chicks when I have them in here. They lay on their bins and sleep. They don't try to get them, other than that younger cat who would if one was loose. A while back I had one get out of the incubator and I didn't notice. A while later my 15 year old cat was meowing like crazy; same meow he does when he brings me a toy. (He brings me a toy then drops it at my feet when I tell him he is a good boy and pet him) Anyway, I went to see what he had and he was sitting with the chick on the floor. He hadn't tried to bite it and was just letting me know it was there. What a great old cat he is! There are good an bad cats like their are dogs I think.

In my situ where I often have 200-400 birds here at once I couldn't possibly treat all of them. Of course they are not all scrunched in the same pen either. I think there is a good chance all of one's birds could get infected if one has a cold or something particularly if they are in closed quarters. But I also believe in preventative medicine. I.E. good nutrition, fresh water, Fresh air, cleaner surroundings. Not that I go around cleaning all the time but I try to keep things like ammonia and dust down. I think over crowding and the stress it causes is most likely to cause disease. If I could afford to I would feed my birds tons of fresh green produce and worms and bugs. I gotta get off of here. Have a good evening
