I go back for my post op appointment in about a week in Topeka. I'll look for that at TSC then. I could see using that on my dogs as well. Might help my female build up her system before having pups.

Well last night I went out to close up the run & check on all my chickens & noticed I'm missing one of my Speckled Sussex hens. I looked all over & didn't see any sign of her, so I don't know what happened, she's just missing in action. I'll be glad when these pups can do their job. I also noticed there had been something that tried to dig under the chicken coop so I put more dirt over the hole so I can see if they try it again. That wouldn't have happened at all if my pups were bigger & could stay out at night, but they're too little right now to leave out.

Mighty quiet here this morning. I just made a great score. I like using red flood lights for heat lamps in brooders and bins but had run out. They are lower wattage, these are 100 wts, put out as much heat as a heat lamp and of course the red keeps picking down. I was doing some searching and found a place that has them dirt cheap. The average cost of these is about $5-6 each. I found them for $1.50 each and they are located in Missouri. I ordered 25 of them because they are so hard to find at a decent price. Anyone want the information and I'll be glad to let you know. I can use these to put a little heat in my hen houses this winter and this spring I won't have to worry about having enough bulbs on hand for my chicks.
Of course I know most of you don't produce as many chicks as I do but if you plan on doing some hatching you can't beat this price. At this price I would buy several. If you are going to have chickens you are going to need them.

Do sussex go broody? Maybe she has built a nest somewhere? I hate predators. Grow puppies grow!
I think I've decided to keep a female if my dog has pups in January. I don't need three dogs but get very nervous at the idea of something happening to one of my dogs and not having a trained chicken guard. I worry at times like these when there are deer hunters all around. I could see my male GP getting shot by some deer hunter. Not because he looks like a deer but because he would chase the deer off.
So many of them hunt this creek area without getting permission.

Well I don't think the Speckled Sussex hen has gone broody since she has not laid yet. They aren't a really broody type either, I guess they will sometimes, but not as much as other breeds. I just can't figure out what could have happened to her unless she got left out accidentally one night & something got her. I usually count heads at night, but I've been awfully busy lately & could have missed her a couple days ago & not realized it.

Yeah, I wish I had gotten these pups earlier in the summer so they would be bigger by now, but that's just how things have worked out. I doubt my hubby would have been so accommodating about getting them earlier on, so I guess it's for the best. We weren't even planning to get two at the same time, but he was worried about one being out in the cold by herself & really I think they are much better off with two together, so I'm glad we got them both. Jasmine being how she is so reserved I think needs Lily the more outgoing one to kind of lead her right now. I was told Jasmine is showing signs of being the lead LGD even though to me she is the shy, reserved one. I don't know that much about this breed though other than what I've read, so I have to take someone else's word for that.

Danz, with all the birds you have you probably could use 3 dogs anyway. That would be horrible to have your dog shot by a hunter. I wish hunters would be more respectful, I know we have people around us that are always shooting & with houses all around here it worries me. I was going to put up a no hunting sign down at the other end of our property, but our fence got torn down & I haven't found a place to put it now. We have a lot of deer that go through our front yard & down to the front 5 acres that is overgrown to sleep. I worry that someone will come in there without permission to hunt. I was in my backyard a couple of years ago, we live in the Flint Hills at the southern part here & our house is built into the hill in the back & we have a big hill behind it. Anyway, I was out there doing some watering when I heard someone shoot & heard a ZING go by my ear. Geez, I yelled so they would know I was out there & it scared me to death. How close does a bullet have to get to be able to hear it like that? I don't know, but it was too close for me!

Random question/ poll. How many of you heat your coops in the winter?? I do not have electricity and I'm trying everything I can to keep them warm save a heater in the coop.
