Wow, you all have been chatty today while I've been gone! I was in Wichita all day today for an appt. & ran a few errands while I was there.

IVY, for the cookie tin water heaters, do you just use the large cookie tins or can smaller ones be used? I found a couple of larger ones at Wal Mart, just in the Christmas stuff, but I went to a couple of Goodwill stores today & all I could find were the average sized tins, which are a little smaller than the other two I got. I might look a couple more places tomorrow if I get a chance in Ark City. The Wal Mart in Winfield only had one lamp kit last night, I was aggravated because I wanted to get about 3 of them. They don't stock that store very well a lot of the time, if they run out of something it could be awhile before they get any more.

Hawkeye, I went to TSC today to get some feed & looked for that pro-biotic you were talking about. I found it but then the lady helping me told me about another one in the horse supplies that was basically the same thing & a couple of dollars cheaper. It's called Probios & on the back it says it can be used for cows, swine, horses, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, birds, & reptiles so chickens should fit in there too. It can be mixed in water or sprinkled on the food. They also have another one that she said they were out of right now that probably is even cheaper because it's a bigger container. I'll have to see if they have it next time & check it out also. The sales lady said whenever something is for goats it seems like it's always more expensive. I hope your little chicks get better soon. I wonder what is going around?

Danz, I'm glad your rooster is doing better. I know that I was told awhile back that wild birds will bring in respiratory stuff to the chickens if they're anywhere around where they are. We have lots of wild birds here at our place because we have lots of trees for them. I hope my chickens don't get sick again, we already went through all of that earlier on than the rest of you. I'm hoping since they already had it they won't get it again, but we'll see.

Trish I think the size cookie tin you choose should depend on the size waterer you plan to put on it. I often use a small pan, so I have a number of the regular small size. The bigger one I made is not in use yet, but I bet it will be when it gets colder out.

Trish-- well doesn't that just figure!! HA!! Of course there is a cheaper Probiotic than the one I bought. Sigh. I looked everywhere and asked the people there for probiotics and they had no idea what they had back there. I just happened to come across the goat one all by myself. I didn't see any for horses. But I think this tub is going to last me a loooong time. BUt next time, I'll be sure to check out the cheaper stuff.

Well, I'm DONE for the night. I just came back in from the barn from unloading a few hundred pounds of grain (for the horses) into the storage barrels. Tired, cold and ready for a cup of tea and sit down and read a book.

Hawkeye, Well I wouldn't have found this other probiotic either if the lady standing around hadn't asked me what I was looking for & then we got to talking about what I wanted it for. She happens to have goats, but buys the probiotic that I bought today since it's cheaper. She says the horse & cattle stuff is always cheaper than the goat stuff, why I don't know, but that's what she said. Anyway, now we know.

No Renee, this showed up on the two roos who have colds and it looks like they have been bleeding. It came on too fast to be pox. I've never seen these cochin roos fight each other so I assume it is from the cold. I am gong to have to let this guy back out. He is refusing to eat in the cage. Otherwise he appears healthy. He just doesn't like being caged. Treating his cold won't do any good if he goes on a hunger strike. This really stinks. These are both two of my top breeder cochin roos too.
I thought if I caught the other one and brought him in They would be happy but the other one refuses to be cornered. I wasn't feeling good enough last night to go out after bedtime and pluck him off.
Hawkeye I went to TSC in Topeka and got some of the probiotic stuff when I had my doctor's appointment. Their horse Probios was priced the same as the goat stuff there. The large container of Probios was $50. I couldn't see ever using that much for chickens. It might have been cheaper per ounce but Geez! It was in like maybe a gallon or slightly smaller jug.

Danz-I've had that happen several times. It seems the roosters that are used to being free range or in a large pen go into some kind of depression if they are isolated in a small cage. I can't say that I don't blame them. It's quite a change. Several times I have had to isolate a rooster and then thought I was going to loose him because he just flat wouldn't eat or drink while caged. I end up having to turn them loose, then they perk up and do just fine.
