So I'm not sure what to do. If I put tylan in water all of the birds might drink it. I don't know but most medications will kill a duck and my ducks come in and drink out of the water for the chickens. I guess my only option would be to put them in the dog kennel for now but they could fly out if they wanted to. I guess I feel a lot better with injections although it would be a pain. Hawkeye let me know if you find that post. I haven't seen any of the birds fling mucus when they shake their heads but that is the only thing that makes sense. These colds seem to only be affecting the roosters. I haven't seen any hens with the head shake. Is that weird or what?

My hens didn't shake their heads either, they just sneezed & you could hear the rattle.

Sigh, well, I've been performing First Aid on one of my little Polish pullets. SEYMORE attacked her and nearly killed her!!

Seriously, I am sooo angry. The chicks never came out of their coop again today... BUT Seymore made her way into the coop and went after them. The rest of them are fine. I don't see any signs of attack. But this poor baby, she got her crest scalped off! And her beak is broke!! How the heck did Seymore break this baby's beak!?!?

The end part is cracked and when I dropped in a bit of water, it flipped up and the rest of her beak didn't.

Poor baby! I hope she will make it. I gooped on Triple Antibiotic ointment and am going to pray for the best. I have her in the house, under a heat lamp and wrapped in a towel. Anything else you all would do? I'm going to give her electrolytes every time I use the dropper to give her water. She is just laying there. She was laying on her side all limp and eyes closed. But I have her propped up in the towel so she can sleep sitting up. She did peep at me when I readjusted her towel. OH-- and one of my little silkies did escape the coop today and was under the coop hiding. I had hoped she'd go back inside, but instead I just had to crawl under there and bring her in. She's fine, too. I think a bit scared, but fine. Seymore is NEVER going near my chickens again.

Wow. Seems like every one is having problems lately. Are you sure Seymore attacked her. Just checking cause I had a young bird get injured quite a bit like that once. I think it got stuck on some wire or a nail head or something. It lived for a while but had a little trouble eating. The bill actually grew back to some degree. I wouldn't count on your bird making it if it is laying on it's side with it's eyes closed. Be sure it gets plenty of water, electrolytes and some sugar or fat for energy. If she can still swallow and you have anything like fish oil capsules around you can mix some of that in the water as well for some fat intake. You'll have to keep her separate if she makes it until all of her wounds are healed or the other chicks will pick on her.
Is this one of the ones you had shipped or is this one you raised from a new hatch?

OH, and YEAH, I'm sure it was Seymore. I opened the coop door, and Seymore was standing right over her and getting ready to peck at her again! I had to get Seymore off of her and I threw her out. I'm not sure if I have fish oil capsules, but i have flax seed capsules. Think that might work? She is so out of it right now, I won't attempt to do more than just syringe her water tonight.

Gosh Hawkeye, I'm sorry about your chick, I hope it makes it.

My little Partridge Rooster is still hopping around on one foot. I'm not sure what to do with him. I need to bring him in & soak it, but it was so nasty today I just went out & did what I had to & that was it. Maybe it will be at least drier tomorrow. I had to haul feed to fill the feeders today of all days, so I got really wet by the time I got water & everything hauled into the coop & then fed & watered the pups. Those pups were so wet & muddy, but they wouldn't go into their run until I made them go in there to feed them. At least they have tarp over their run & the nice cozy dog house with a door to crawl in & get warm & dry. They sure don't seem to mind the cold & wet though.

I'm getting little pullet eggs from one or two of my hens, but I haven't caught them in the nest, so I don't know who it is yet.

What do you think?? Think she could survive this if she isn't injured internally? I don't know what all happened to her other than the obvious-- which is her head and her broken beak. BTW, these pictures make her look a bit better than she is. I propped her up against the side of the box so that she wasn't all flopped out sideways in the chips. Poor thing. She is moving when I talk to her a bit-- sort of settling herself when she hears me.

update on my Polish-- I syringed her the electrolytes and some yogurt too. I think as bad as she feels, she was hungry because she ate the yogurt out of the syringe with no problems and didn't turn her beak away. I didn't want to give her too much, so I gave her just enough to make ME feel better. She isn't standing up, but when I lay her back in her box, she does stand up for a few seconds looking around before settling back down again. Her face isn't smack down in the chips either. She's holding it up a bit better. This is not improvement by leaps and bounds-- but just enough that makes me hope she'll be alive in the morning. We'll see!! I sure hope so!
