Do any of you know what causes my Marans eggs to do this? They are all bumpy and the bumps are mostly concentrated at the ends of the egg. Also, I just had one of EE's lay an egg with 1 or 2 bumps at the top, today. Is it too much calcium? Feed? Or disease?!?

I get eggs like that sometimes. I just chalked it up to a mis-spray of the paint! Sometimes the eggs move faster or slower through the assembly line resulting in eggs like those. My birds never show any other problems and often their next few eggs are fine and then they will have another that isn't perfect and so on.

Some of my hens lay eggs like that. Seems to be more of a problem in young birds. But others just lay weird eggs. I don't believe it is a deficiency at all.
Oh BTW Hawkeye, the thing about Marans are that they lay these beautiful dark brown eggs that people just love. They lay huge eggs and are good layers. The roosters are really big and considered a dual purpose bird. There's of course not as much meat as a modern cross meat bird though. I thought when I fist got chickens I would probably decide that would be my major breed. But the light Brahmas are my best breed for layers and being docile.

It may just be how she is wired. I had a hen that laid a speckled egg and hers was never smooth either. She still laid every other day like clock work. Maybe it has to do with the speckles. I don't know since she has been my only speckled egg layer. In any case, I wouldn't worry about it as long as the shells are hard and not soft.

ClairDazzle, those are really cool looking eggs- despite being bumpy! I guess I'd just appreciate them for what they are- a work of art!

Danz, still feeling terrible for you. I sure hope you can get that baby to pull through for you. Can you take the needle off a syringe and put the milk replacer down his throat and see if rubbing him and a bit of milk will bring him around? Even if you do lose him, we all know you did every thing you could. I said a prayer for him and that he will have the strength to hang in there. I believe God loves our animals as much as we do.

More of the same 'ole same 'ole here. I keep anticipating my garage silkies to lay, so every morning I look in there to see. I'm thinking I should get out the incubator and see how it works. I still need to go get that therm that Danz told me to get. I will write that down and get it next time I go to Walmart. I think they might be laying soon. And I know Zorro is doing is job out there, too. At least he is gentle, and I haven't seen any feathers being taken out by him. I'm going to order them aprons just in case, though. I found someone here on BYC that makes them for a great price.

I have had eggs like that before also, i think its just a build up of extra calcium!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the waterers, no nothing fancy or involved. I just prefer nipples, cups, pop bottle and rabbit waterers to conventional poultry waterers. I'll take any of the above any day vs the usual ones. I was going to order pail deicers, but couldn't bring myself to spend that money when it was needed more elsewhere, so rigged up what I could with what we had or could pick up cheap. They didn't take 5 minutes apiece to put together,if that, and most expensive was $6 to buy all new other than the insulation scrap. I hate dealing with waterers, especially when it's cold.

Well I went back out to give Marshmallow her pill and the same pup was separate and cold. I thought it was dead, but then I was I saw a leg move. As I speak I have it wrapped in a heat pad and am trying to give it replacement milk iwth a little corn syrup in it. It is still too weak to suck but has gotten some milk in it's mouth. The warmer it gets the better it acts, so I am going to keep it in the heat pad and continue to try to feed it as long as it takes. I'm on the verge of crying. I can't keep my eyes from tearing up.
BTW Ivy, this is a little girl not a little boy. It would be the perfect pup. I just pray that she will pull through.
