Danz- in the bottom left hand corner of you posts there should be "button" with a pencil (next to the red flag) that's the new edit "button". I think the are a few quirks to be fixed with the new site. It won't let me go past any smileys at the end of my post (when I edit) to add anything.

Hawkeye-Yes, that's a pigeon. It could be pet, but probably not. Hard to tell what is wrong with it. Do you guys still have snow cover everywhere? I could be starving or it could be a multitude of things. Pigeons can be carriers of west nile virus. I would not be too apt to keep a sick pigeon around.

yikes!! do I throw it back outside to die? It's wrapped up in a towel on my couch. No, no snow cover-- just been really cold and freezing, but nothing else.

I would guess it was a pet any pigeon will struggle, or at least try, when held unless it's been handle extensivly or all but dead. They make great pets and I've had quite a few but I'm not a great pigeon vet so I can't tell you whats wrong with it. From what your saying he's not quite on the verge of death so I'm not sure what his problem could be. I would keep him away from your other birds but I wouldn't be to worried about it. You might try finding someone in your area that keeps pigeons and have them look at it in person to see what they think.

okay, I've been giving it more water and it's wanting it. It's reaching out for it. Maybe it's dehydrated because everything is frozen?? It's now standing up again. I sort of pressed it back down and wrapped it tighter so it can't go flying/leaping off the couch. Sheesh. So now what?? If this thing is sick-- will it just die? I guess there't no way to know if it's sick, right? It's not wheezing... or opening it's mouth (like a chicken). Just sitting there eye balling me.

Thanks, Rittert! If it lives over night, I'll figure out what to do with it. For now, I'll just do the water thing and see if it might want food. I think the sugar water is helping. I'll be sure to wash really well and keep it away from my birds.

I couldn't throw it back out to die either. Good luck. Maybe it will be better in the morning and want to fly away.

I have an emergency!!

This bird was in my front yard. I just let my dog out and she tried to get this bird. Don't worry-- my dog didnt' end up touching her-- I yelled at her and ran after her. I grabbed the bird and brought the bird in. What is this?? A pigeon?? And why is it laying in my yard? Does it probably have a disease??? What should I be looking for? I can't just put it back outside to freeze, I would feel bad about that. I gave it a dropper full of water with sugar. It's not wheezing... But it's feet feel VERY cold. Ideas???? Do you think this is a pet? It seemed happy to be held, but then again.... it's probably really sick, and doesn't care, right???

It doesn't look like the type of wild pigeon that we have around here. You could post a pic of it in the pigeon thread. Maybe they would be able to tell if it was a certain breed or if it is wild. I wouldn't think you would be able to handle it like that if it was wild. I would put it in a box or something with food and water and see how it is tomorrow. You could post a lost and found listing on craigslist and see if someone claims it. Maybe it is someones racing pigeon?

With the water frozen every where it is probably just dehydrated but they can get bird flu like the other birds so don't put it with your chickens. Pigeons like to roost on rooftops and stuff on old stores and can be a real problems. If the thing stays calm after regaining it's strength you can bet it's a pet. But if it gets flighty it's probably a wild one. Give it water and electrolytes or water with sugar and a little salt. Any kind of bird food will do. Be sure to wash your hands before handling your other birds in the mean time.
