Consolidated Kansas

Okay. I just sent my request to join the facebook swap. I'm not on facebook very much, but I think it is an excellent idea.

Trish-Glad the pups are preoccupied with their bones today. They will act like silly ornery school children for a number of months yet. When the weather gets cold even our older dogs run around a play like a couple of pups sometimes.

I went up and got the welded wire for the brooders I want to build. I don't have time to work on them today but hopefully by this weekend I will get going on it. Before we left we watched our goofy guineas chasing each other around the hard. It was hilarious to watch one chase one then another one chase that one then the first on being chased turn around and chase the other one. They are the silliest birds. I like having them around just for th entertainment factor!

tnt, thanks for adding me as admin, I'll try to help out whenever I can, maybe between the two of us we can handle it. I don't know exactly how to get the word out that we have the page other than on here. The bad part is the pages go by so fast on here. Maybe we just need to post it every so often so that people who miss it will see it. If anybody has any other ideas let us know & yes my real name is Teresa for those who don't know that. Now we'll find out everybody's real names on Facebook.

Well I'm off to the garage to put cages together, I'll see you all later.

We could put the link in our signatures or on the website thing under our avatar.

Edit- I put it in my siggy. What do you think?

Welcome emilemiller57, glad to have you join the group. When you get a chance tell us about yourself.
Hey guys, I think the best thing to do with this Kansas poultry swap is to invite any of our friends that have poultry. I have friends who don't use BYC who raise birds but would be interested in the swap thing.
I went to town today to deliver eggs. I decided since it was nice out to put up this bird feeder stand I bought my Mom for Christmas and hang the new bird feeder I bought her on it as well. I got it all set up and realized that they were out of feed except some BOSS so I went and bought them a 40 pound bag of feed. Then I dug out another feeder from the garage and hung that as well. Mom and Dad have a feeder by the kitchen table but their health has gotten so bad that Mom spends a lot of time laying in bed. So I lined up the feeder where she could see it from her pillow. She seemed very happy.
Anyway on my way back from the store I saw a house that had recently been purchased that had previously had tons of yard art. I noticed some old concrete statues out there by the trash cans. I wasn't sure if they were there for decoration or as trash. So I pulled in and I said I saw these statues, and he said "take them-they are yours." Well they are old and not perfect but perfect for me. I got a duck or goose and I got a rooster and a hen. The roo and hen are missing a beak and the bottom of the rooster has some damage. The duck has it's neck broken but it is still in tact with the rebar. I think I can clean these up and make some repairs out of body putty and repaint them. They are actually awesome pieces. He showed me a trash can with a rabbit (plastic not concrete like the birds) and a couple of fairy statues in them. There were lots of other little pieces of yard art but I wasn't interested in them. I thought a few of you would have loved the rabbit though.
Ok so once again I brought some more of my hoarder tendancies home but I consider them a real find. Now I need to fix them up and figure out where to put them permanently.

I forgot to mention, these are life sized and made of concrete so they weigh a bunch. They both have algae on them. A good cleaningd painting and repair will make them look awesome.

Danz, if you are going to rebuild the beak -- if it's big enough, I'd use a very small drill to drill into the cement to put in a bit of frame for the new piece to help adhere and support. I'm not sure how to fix cement-- but if it were terra cotta or ceramic, it would be much easier! But they DO make a mortar mix that is supposed to bond to cement, but you need to use a bonding agent over the joint where it will be sticking. (it looks like paint) Then I'd repaint it-- like you suggested. Personally, painting them would be the most fun part of the this job! I think they are cute. :) I'd like to have some chicken statues! That's no joke, I've been sort of hunting. There is an artist in town here that builds (welds) animals out of junk-- like old car parts, etc. He built a turkey last year. It was big, and super cool. It was about 3 feet tall!! It was only $150. (for such an artist's creation, I think that's a great deal) And I debated on it back and forth. I drove by it for weeks thinking about it. It eventually got sold and I could kick myself now. It was seriously a piece that I would have loved forever. It was so neat!! The next time I see that guy make a turkey or chicken, it's MINE. LOL!!

OH!! and my MOST exciting news for tonight??? My DH found out that the closure (at work) schedule has been extended to last well into next year about this time. So we won't be looking at selling or moving until next year about now. The down side... I don't feel like I can build any more pens or anything, because I can't take them with me! So sad! I was almost hoping for a quick move so that I could get started on more coops!! ha! BUT-- as I was saying, the GOOD news.... he says I can go ahead and incubate!!! Yippee!!!!

Yay! That's eggciting!! I want to get an incubator but my husband would kill me! I can't control myself when the farm stores have chicks let alone if I could hatch my own whenever I wanted to! So I guess I will continue to live vicariously through y'all.

Awe just build the pens. You won't regret it. Your prayers may have been answered here!
That's a good idea to drill and reinforce the concrete. I actually have a concrete dolphin fountain that got his nose broken off. I simply used JB weld on it and that was some 15 years ago. It's still just like new. I think I can form the beaks with body putty and blend it in without any one ever noticing once it is painted. For the bigger repairs I'll have to mix up some concrete mix or something to build the part. I know the pictures don't show it but the rooster in particular looks very realistic out in the yard. When I sat it out there a couple of my roosters went running out there making warning sounds. I know they thought there was a stranger in town and they didn't want him near his women! It would have made a great video.
I personally think they were an awesome find. I don't think I've ever had the nerve to stop and ask about something someone had sitting in their yard before. I just noticed them and decided they were worth the chance of making a fool of myself.
