Pasty butt is when the poo collects on the chicks rear ends and it plugs them so they die of toxins if it isn't cleaned up and cared for. You should watch this especially carefully with shipped chicks at about 4-5 days. You can loose your whole investment rather quickly. Shipping stress is one of the major contributors to pasty butt. I normally just pull mine off and it takes some fuzz with it, but you can wash it off with warm water. (not allowing the chicks to get chilled). I have also put vaseline on their butts after cleaning them which helps it not to stick. Some breeds are more prone to pasty butt than others.
You can cross Marans and still get the dark egg color but of course the offspring wouldn't be considered a pure breed for those who care.

Love the pictures! Danz, you proved my point that NOTHING is cuter than a pup, and Candace, your flocks are gorgeous.

Hawkeye, my dogs will eat a little chicken feed if it's around, but they're far more interested in chicken poop and spend a lot of time patrolling outside the fence for any that may have escaped.

Candace, sorry to hear about your friend. I'll keep her in my thoughts.

Candace, so sorry to hear about your friend, I will keep them in my prayers.

Our Facebook page is growing in members pretty quickly, we added quite a lot yesterday, it stayed busy with a steady stream. I think it will be great to have a place to look for birds & for people to advertise what they have.

I will be glad when we get new members in and can start posting what we want or have available. It would probably get lost in the shuffle right now. Where on earth is Chooks? She really needs to get in on this. She knows more bird people around here than anyone. Also Hawkeye you could invite revolution Mama.

Good Morning, all!

Candace-What Danz said is true. The black copper marans are a different variety of marans than the cookoo, just like any other color variety of chicken. The black coppers lay the darkest egg of all the marans, and that is why they have become so popular. I'd post a picture of some of my eggs but I can't seem to get them to load this morning. I'm going to have to play around with them a little. I think the files might be too big. Anyway, if you cross the BC's with any other variety of marans you will lose "some" of the dark coloring in the egg. They say this happens even if you cross different lines of the BC's. I've always kept my pure Wade-Jeane C1 line. My eggs are pretty dark, but I have seen a few that are darker. Some of the folks who have been breeding them for a few years have got some really nice dark eggs. I'm not quite that far along yet.

Last night when I was at work my DH found a guinea that had accidently got itself lodged between the inner wall and the outer wall of the barn. It had died. I had to have happened yesterday because he said it wasn't stiff yet. Now we have to figure out how to get it out of there. I was worried about something getting lodged in there when we put that inner wall up in the barn. I told my DH then that we should put a cap on it or something. The barn is only lined up to about 6 feet. I guess he wasn't worried about it because his goats can't get lodged in there.... but my birds can!

Guess I better go take care of birds. We've got a Dr. appt. for my DH this aftenoon and then I have to work this evening so my day is going to be shot.

Another interesting fact about Marans eggs is that if you wash them you can wash that dark brown off. It is like a spray that the hen puts on as she is laying. I think it is probably their version of bloom. I only have cuckoo Marans but have some that lay really deep rich dark eggs. Of course I am never sure which hen it is cause I have several. The Welsummers also lay a really dark egg but it isn't as large as Marans eggs. I prefer the cuckoos cause I like their stripes.
That wind is insane today. Otherwise it would be pretty nice out.

Oh, Revolution Mama just moved! She is in Colorado, in a little town near Colorado Springs up in the mountains! She said she is missing her Kansas farm, but I think she's enjoying her new digs. She doesn't have all her birds with her, yet, either. I saw where she said that she just got her Lavender silkies brought up to her. They are soooo pretty!! I would have loved to have some of hers. It's too bad that didn't work out. Anyway, between her and Chooks-- they know a TON of Kansas chicken people. :)

Hey, all. I've got 3 broken computers and my phone is acting up, so I won't be around much for a few days.

I wanted to offer up a lovely Birchen OEGB cockerel for anyone that wants one. Super good-looking. He nearly went to the freezer yesterday because the little squirt is in love with a hen in one of my breeding projects and I can't have him in there wooing her! He's so little he keeps finding ways to sneak in.

Elvis is a lovely guy and I really like him. He needs a girlfriend and a home far away from my chocolates!

First to claim him gets him!

C'mon! I know someone needs Elvis! I hate to keep him caged, but I can't have him adding his genetic contribution to any of my projects. I'll get on FB and add the group, then invite all the chickeny folks out there I know. It ought to blossom well- great idea, folks!!

I'll be back as soon as I can get a cord for my macbook...this is killing me!
