Consolidated Kansas

Oh my goodness.. I just got back from Orschlens. They chicks were so darn cute. I could have stayed in there for hours looking at them. It was really hard to resist. I did notice that quite a few had pasty butt, so at least I know what that looks like now. I tried mentioning it to the lady that was working and she stated that "no, hun.. they are just dirty". Ok. whatever. LOL.

I grabbed myself a 40lb bag of chick starter since I realized after reading on here that the small 5lb bag isn't going to last very long. I also grabbed a plastic waterer in case I ever need to add vinegar to it. They didn't have any Blue-kote left and didn't know what VetRx was, so i'll go check out TSC this weekend. I want to get those to have on hand just in case.

I have not seen VetRX at Orschelns.I have looked at several and none carry it.

Candace, I did look at some other pics of the Golden Campines & it's possible that's what she is. But anyway, whatever she is she's a pretty little hen & I like her. I don't think the Campines are all that common if that's what she is.

I think that reference e-book would be great. It would be something that a lot of people could contribute their knowledge for as long as someone wanted to be responsible for putting it all together. It would really help a lot of people I think for various things to go back & either find the information or refresh their memory on something. Great idea!

Bama, I did see the VetRX at the TSC in Wichita just recently, but they only had one bottle. I have occasionally seen it at Atwood's in Derby, but not often. I have never seen Orschelyn's carry it, they really have very little in the way of chicken meds. I had to order mine online.

Danz, prayers for your mom, I hope she feels better soon.

These are golden penciled hamburgs, right?

They came up on a search for Golden Campines; like this one from feather site:

So many of them are SO similar!
Yeah, the small breedes like these, or like the Phoenix, make the sweetest sound...not a cluck...
But I thought when I saw her, maybe a ButterCup or ButterCup Cross

but her comb is wrong....I do think she's a cross, and I am betting she is like a buttercup crossed with a phoenix....My phoenix hens, have combs like that

Yesterday we ended up going to Andover because my MIL's pacemaker stopped working right and they had to work her in to put in a new one. She's pretty miserable; said she could feel the whole thing and it wasn't like that with the first two. We got back and I barely got caught up on reading the posts here when my mom called to tell us there was a tornado in Hutch. So I shut off the computer and of couse nothing happened here. Sounds like everyone here got through OK last night.

HEchicken, thanks for the heads up about the "Ameraucanas." I don't mind if they aren't the real thing; I just want those gorgeous eggs!

I think it was my cousin's wife who said not to put potato in the worm bin. I'll have to ask her why.

Hawkeye, your poor little carsick pup reminded me of one I had when I was young. His name was Dobie and all you had to do was put him in the car. He was throwing up before Mom even got the car started, never mind out of Park and moving!

Tweety, that "artist" is nuts. I have seen how cattle are slaughtered and I can tell her, it is most definitely not art. If she wants people to see and appreciate how meat gets to the grocery store, there are much better ways than a public bloodbath. Of course, it sounds like maybe her plan is to horrify people into giving up meat. Last week when we were looking the chicks at our Orscheln's I noticed that a LOT of them had pasty butt. What's up with that? My husband's family lived in Inman for years; maybe they know your mother!

Averytds, the forum has been slow for me, too, ever since the changes. Sllloooowwww ...

Candace, those are some truly beautiful birds.

Danz, I hope your mom is doing better. I'm sorry about your baby ducks, too. I've loved hearing about Chopper though; what a funny duck!

My aunt took a cake decorating class and then taught me how to do it when I was 12. I've been the official family cake decorator since then, and also shared that duty with my SIL after I married into the family. Birthdays, anniversaries, whatever. I have a ton of nieces and nephews. I enjoyed it a lot for decades, then gradually began dreading it. My fingers would get so stiff and sometimes cramp; it just wasn't much fun anymore. I was relieved when all the kids got old enough that they don't need anything fancy. I can usually get away with a nice border and some writing, and often someone will request something that requires not decorating at all. My dad always asks for pumpkin pie and one of my nephews wants my fruit tart every year. I'm so grateful!

Welcome to all the new members!

Candace, the Campines are the closest for the coloring & all, like you say the comb is wrong, but otherwise the coloring is about right. She is a sweet little thing anyway, she talks to me when I go out to take care of the rabbits because her cage is on top of the brooder right now across from the rabbit cages.

Totally missed whatever the "Ameraucana" conversation was, but if it regards what you get from the feed store and gorgeous eggs (blue???) are what you desire, be advised many a brown egg layer comes out of the "Ameraucana" bin. Most have notices in little tiny print somewhere about all the possible egg colors you can get. It's very disappointing to spend so long raising a bird waiting for a certain color that you never get. Been there, done that. Last year I decided I wanted just a few olive eggers. I got a cuckoo marans hen, paired her with a black Ameraucana from a reputable source (best chance of having blue egg gene). Hatched just until I had enough pullets (black sexlinks, so sexable at hatch) and voila, now almost a year later, I have the handful of olive eggers I wanted. I would be royally ticked if I didn't because the issue would have been the father.

No idea on the potato, but any help is appreciated. My worm bin contains exactly 1 worm (gift from DD made in class) I'm terrified of killing.

I looked at my silver campines out in the barn. Their combs are single, and really quite large. Especially the cock bird. The pullet has a nice single comb also.

checoukan, well she very well could be a mixture, but her coloring matches the campine the closest when I looked at the pics on feathersite. I also don't know her age, but she looks fairly young to me. Her comb is pale, so my guess is that she has not laid yet.

Trish-I would bet she is a hatchery stock golden campine.

Danz-Hope your mom gets through this okay. I know it gets tougher as you get older.

Hawkey-So it will be like Christmas in the morning when you open that box of eggs, huh? If she didn't pack them right let me know. I will "Bop" her for ya!

Actually, if I know Checoukan, I'll bet she threw in a few "surprises!"

Bama-I can't wait to see your pup! I know I probably saw it Monday, but didn't know which one. We had a great time watching them. I saw one pup that I fell in love with (besides ours!) If it hadn't been spoken for I think we would have come home with it, too. I hope you get that one.

Checoukan-You know, sis, I really wish I could be there to help you get ready for the show this weekend. Be sure to let me know how things go. I'm sure you will do fine.

Whoever (I can't remember) was asking about one LGD vs. two. Here is something that happened last night. We had a big pack of coyotes come running on to the place. As soon as Buddy heard them coming, he sounded the alarm bark and took off around to the north. Runt heard the alarm and took off around them to the south. Buddy intercepted them on the north, turned them back around to the south where they ran smack into Runt. They had no choice but to take off running off to the west with two big white dogs in hot persuit. I love these dogs!

Well, it's been kind of a bummer of a day. Mike has not felt well all day. He tried going to work, but ended up leaving early. Chest pain and BP going up. Then he came home and one of our very best goats that was due to kid soon was found dead. She was one of my favorites. We are just totally blummed. I have no idea what the problem was. I am wondering, though, if perhaps she broke her water early before she was ready to kid and then got an infection and died. I wanted a doeling out of her so bad. We had a BEAUTIFUL doe out of her last year that we were going to keep, and it was killed by one of the other does when it rammed her in the side and broke her ribs. Gee whiz. It's always something.
