Consolidated Kansas

Haven't seen any chiggers-- although I DID see a mosquito the other day!! I was shocked!! So this season doesn't look good on the blood suckers, I bet they are out in full force when spring hits.

Bama-- well you had me rolling, thanks! :)

Danz, been thinking of you! Hope your mom is doing better.

Checoukan, I candled the eggs last night-- I had 5 that the air sacs were still attached and I could see the yolk was fine. The other 5-- there were 3 I could see the air sac was not attached, but moved when I moved the egg, but otherwise, the yolk looked to be in tact, too. The last two-- for some reason, I couldn't see in them well and I didn't see an air sac or much of a yolk... I don't know what that means. I hope those two didn't get scrambled. I left them all in there and we'll see what hatches!! :) I think that's pretty good odds!!!

Hhmmmm, not sure, but give them a chance. I would just let the incubator do its job. If they did get scrambled, you will know when you candle again, but try to avoid handling the eggs any more for several days. Just make sure the pointy end of the eggs is down so the airsac will be at the top. Maybe the three that moves will be ok.

Does anybody have a Brinsea mini advanced incubator?

I just ordered one of them last night and excited for it to arrive early next week. Thought it would be a good experience for my 2 kids. Any shared experience with them would be much appreciated...

Thank you SO MUCH Checoukan for my eggs!

I took a couple of pictures yesterday of them after I got them-- all in excellent shape! I unpacked them on a soft towel in front of my incubator so I could arrange the trays and get them put in. Those took up one row and only two eggs on another-- they are SMALL eggs!! Much smaller than my silkies!

I got Black Rosecomb bantam eggs (for those of you who didn't remember)

---eta-- the eggs you see in my incubator-- I'm thinking those are not fertile either. They are my own silkie eggs. Looks like I'm going to be just down to what Rosie gave me. :)

You just lucked out dear, If I had not had to have my bator ready for the 270 eggs I got from the U of A for the 4H kids to hatch, those eggs would have go into the GQF!!!

Awwww!! How sweet! I love the look of tiny eggs :) I really truly hope that they all hatch into beautiful babies! I was reading up on the Black Rosecombs last night and it seems like they must be hard ones to raise. Every place I looked said that they are not for beginners - but wow - they are beautiful!!

So, remember the story I saw in our newspaper about the Meat Birds as Art project. It seems that there was such an outcry that she's changed directions. You can read the store here: http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2012/mar/02/poultry-not-picture-now/

Thanks-- the eggs are adorable!! I loved how tiny they were! I love eating our silkie eggs too-- it's so cute to crack them-- it goes something like "tink, tink...plop" hehe!! I think I have pretty darned good odds on several of them hatching. :)

Okay-- how funny is it that the city threatened the "artist" with a $1K fine and 6mo jail time? Yeah, I guess I'd change my plans, too! Sheesh. If she'd thought this over, she would have just done something in her own back yard and not talked about a public slaughter-- she could have gotten away with it.

Wichitakid- My completely unscientific/quick sexing method is the "screams like a little girl" test. The ones that start shrieking and carrying on like they're dying when all you do is pick them up. The drama queens. Those always turn out to be my boys.

Hysterical!!!!!

WichitaKidd-- I'd say the odds are VERY high on getting a lot of roosters with your straight run. If you can't have roosters, it probably would have been worth your while to buy the pullets.. Oh-- I remember you said they weren't what you wanted.. there are chicks being sold at Orschelns, Woodard Mercantile, Atwoods, TSC.. might have something you want there. Lots of selection. Our coop (grain elevator) even has chicks! BTW-- I bought only TWO straight run silkies last year from Atwoods... this year, the both of them just learned how to crow. Sigh. I was hoping for at least ONE cute little egg layer. I'm not sure I'm going to keep them or not. It's no biggie to have roosters out here for me, but I just don't know if I want my layers harassed by two little silkie cockerels high on hormones.

I'll leave them be and not touch them. :)

I have the Brinsea Octagon Eco 20. So far-- it holds temperature REALLY well. It even gets back up to temp really fast after you lift the lid. I think you'll love your mini-- does it have the auto-turner? Those will just roll around in a circle instead of being rocked like mine.

I think it is so awesome that you are involved in the 4-H like that! Those kids are super lucky to be working with you! Do you have workshops at your place? We haven't found anyone to demonstrate Showmanship for us. Our first show is near Oskaloosa and the leader there said that she'd teach my oldest the basics on Showmanship while we are there and hopefully get him started so he can do it next time.
