Consolidated Kansas

Well I certainly didn't see snow in the forecast.
I feel so very very behind. Things are crazy with my Mom in the hospital and so many other things going on right now.
I'd be glad to sell a portion of my antigen to anyone who is licensed to test. Chooks I don't have any plans at all to be up that direction but maybe with a little planning I could make a trip.
As far as the testing goes I fill out the forms and submit them to the state. There is a copy of what I fill out that I give to the flock owner.
So on this crazy weather we have, I also saw some mosquitoes this week. There was actually one that made it into the house! Unreal!
My Mom is doing better mentally but she is very weak. She is bored and wants to go home. Silly woman! I have to call a little later and see what the doctor said. I'm just pretty exhausted trying to keep up with things right now.
So let me catch up. I had a pheonix hen who laid on a board attached to the rafters. She managed to hatch an egg and I had to set up a latter to get the chick down. I took her other eggs but only one other one looked like there was a chick forming. All the others appeared good but I don't think she was sitting on them. She was one very upset hen. I also took all the eggs from my group of broody hens that were bunched in the corner. I had about 5 that were rotten, and some with minor development. Then DH found some eggs in the barn and some more in a pile of trusses. So I took all the viable eggs and put them in the incubator. Now I have 2 GQF incubators full of eggs! I have no idea when they will or won't hatch either since they can obviously be at different stages. I guess I'll just mark on the calendar when the last of them should be sent to the hatcher and watch the others for development.
I also found another 3 dozen or so under the front porch. I was dressed to go to town so I didn't climb under there to pull them out. I have one more broody up above the ceiling in the garage that I can't get to and one more in the hen house that I have left alone. I'll probably pull the eggs from the hen house when I have more room in the bators.
I didn't have time to get any of my wood split for the breeder trailer but I did go out and do some measuring and stuff. I can't make my pens exactly how I planned because of walls doors and windows but I have a pretty good idea of what I will do.
David, feather sexing on the wings only works within a couple hours of when chicks are hatched and only works on specific breeds. I've tried a lot of different sexing methods but just haven't had that much luck with it being accurate other than color link sexing in breeds you can do that with. Most breeds I can tell by 3-6 weeks what they are. Others they can be pretty much full grown before I can tell. I have a couple pullets crow before I realized I was wrong.
I am buying a big tiller to pull behind my tractor. I did some research and finally found the one I want. I guess I am going to have to get very serious about gardening to justify spending that much money. ....especially when I have 2 other tillers I can use if I feel like being bounced around a lot. I am going to go get it in the next week or so. It is being held for me. DH graciously said I didn't have to give him the money for the lumber he picked up for me (under $200), if I would pay for the tiller so he could be part owner. Yeah $1500 vs $200. I said "Yes, that would be a really good deal." l o n g p a u s e "for you." Sometimes I can't believe how cheap he can be and other times I think he is super generous. I am sure I will do ALL of the gardening. He has no interest whatsoever, and all the prep work, but he will enjoy eating it. Heis more the type to go to the freezer and open a package of frozen veggies than bother to grow them.
I'm sorry if I missed any questions. Just ask me again.

I think it is so awesome that you are involved in the 4-H like that! Those kids are super lucky to be working with you! Do you have workshops at your place? We haven't found anyone to demonstrate Showmanship for us. Our first show is near Oskaloosa and the leader there said that she'd teach my oldest the basics on Showmanship while we are there and hopefully get him started so he can do it next time.

When I put eggs in the bator, I never touch them until it time to go into the hatcher. I just let the bator do its job.
We had a clinic here 2 years ago, but you would have not been doing 4H. I know they are going to have a 4H show, judging, and showmanship clinic as a fund raiser up at Payola on March, 31.

Hawkeye, the first thing you need to do is make some flash cards. I assume you are going to be working with the silkies? Get all The facts you can on the breed. origin, weights, comb standards, feet, colors. Work with the kids. I will send you a judging sheet we use.

Oh wow!!! Good to know! Okay, I'll go look up all the specifics on Silkies and make up flash cards. That is really a GREAT idea! I think this is going to be such a fun year! I take it you judge Showmanship, too? Definitely feel free to give us pointers on anything you may think of!

Danz, that would drive me crazy to find eggs laying everywhere. LOL. I take it your birds are all free range :) How fun, though, to get a nice surprise when one hatches and it wasn't what you were expecting.

So about this wikichicken thing: I missed several posts so I'm not sure what is being planned. Pikeman, are you planning on building a website with chicken information on it? If so, I'd be glad to write a few articles or submit some plans.

Wow, there has been a lot of writing since last night when I read last.

Danz, it sounds like your hens have really been busy laying everywhere. My pups would have a heyday if mine laid all over the place like that, they really would be full. I'm glad to hear your mom is starting to feel better.

Hawkeye, good luck with your little eggs, I hope you have a great hatch! Let us all know how they do.

Well I think I'm going to have to start an antibiotic on this little hen I got at Yates Center today. She seems to be developing some kind of respiratory thing. I have used some VetRX on her, but I'm thinking maybe I should hit her with some antibiotic to try to nip it in the bud before it gets any worse. She doesn't look bad at all, but she is having some trouble with her breathing. I'm sure glad I have kept her in the garage away from the others.

Trish, She seemed very healthy at the sale but she was really close to that pen with the bad colds. I guess finding eggs makes me hatch. It's a good thing I have plenty of others to sell. I am going to sell some duck eggs to one of my regular customers. (for eating) He said he wants some and wants to take some to a friend in OKC,OK who will pay whatever I ask. I won't gouge them. It was perfect timing since I have so many in the bator right now.
I just can't get any energy going today. I should get in gear and get some things done. I haven't gotten to sit on here for a couple days so it's nice ot just surf and read.

The main thing in showmanship, is and with all of them, they need to know all they can about the bird. Besides looking neat, the child needs to know, what sex, what they are fed. The different types of feathers. For that one use real feathers, and tape, or paste them to the flash card, and then work with idetification, and location on the bird.

With the little guys, the judges work with them because they don't want to scare the kids. We have been using Larry Denny out of Mo. He is so great with the kids and they just love him. He is an ABA Judge. They may ask them to tell them about the birds, and if it lays eggs, what color are the eggs. The funny one last year just cracked Larry up was he was talking to a child, who was holding a big RIR Cock bird, and any way the boy blurted out, " and I just can't wait for her to lay an egg!" Larry usually does not crack up, but he just busted out laughing. We were standing back, and we wondered what was said. After he finished he came over to us, and told us the whole story. Then larry told us he had told the child to "let him(Larry) know when that chicken lays its first egg". Really lightened the day up.
