The main thing in showmanship, is and with all of them, they need to know all they can about the bird. Besides looking neat, the child needs to know, what sex, what they are fed. The different types of feathers. For that one use real feathers, and tape, or paste them to the flash card, and then work with idetification, and location on the bird.

With the little guys, the judges work with them because they don't want to scare the kids. We have been using Larry Denny out of Mo. He is so great with the kids and they just love him. He is an ABA Judge. They may ask them to tell them about the birds, and if it lays eggs, what color are the eggs. The funny one last year just cracked Larry up was he was talking to a child, who was holding a big RIR Cock bird, and any way the boy blurted out, " and I just can't wait for her to lay an egg!" Larry usually does not crack up, but he just busted out laughing. We were standing back, and we wondered what was said. After he finished he came over to us, and told us the whole story. Then larry told us he had told the child to "let him(Larry) know when that chicken lays its first egg". Really lightened the day up.

OMGosh, that is so funny! He wants his cockerel to lay an egg! hehehe!! (**note to self-- remind my boy that cockerels don't lay eggs...) I wrote all of that down. We have no papers or anything on Showmanship. I should probably Google that as well... I thought they'd have classes, but so far, none are scheduled. I'm glad the 4-H leader in Oskalooska is going to help my boy. He just turned 8yrs old yesterday, so this is his 1st year. We'll go over all of that before we go so he at least knows what they are asking and talking about. I never thought of the feathers.. but yeah, he should be able to identify the points on his birds. I didn't sign him up for the Showmanship-- just the poultry judging. The leader told me that I could skip the signing up this time and she said she would walk him thru a mock-showmanship judging. I've just been in contact with her via e-mail, so I thought that was pretty nice of her.

Trish-- so sorry about your hen. That totally sucks if she caught a cold from the sick birds next to her. How unfair!!! People with sick birds should be asked to leave.

Danz, is your mom doing any better now? Sounds like it's still cold up your way. Hope the snow is gone! It's not exactly warm here either, but it's not bad.

Anybody around the Lawrence/Leavenworth area have muscovy ducks? I'm looking for some eggs to hatch or some little ducklings.

Actually, my mom has dark muscovies. She lives S. of Topeka, but I go to Lawrence about once a month. Are you wanting some eggs? She won't sell her babies, but she's been known to sell the eggs, usually only 4-6 at a time, since she has a small bunch. In full swing, she can get about 3 a day.

Hawkeyel-I know there are a few videos on Utube of kids doing showmanship with their birds. It would be good to watch them. Some do a better job than others but it would give you a good idea of some of the things to focus on. Now.... resist the urge to candle those eggs every day!

Concerning the black chick I posted pictures of. It seems this is something that happens with them sometimes. That chick probably carries an excess of melanizers and some of the breeders felt that would be the best one to mix with my lavenders when I make black/lavender splits next year. If this chick grows out without any faults or defects that is probably what I will do.

Well, I need to get busy. We are going to clean out the barn and I need to move some chicks and I need to work on my nest boxes and roosts a little more. I've got more to do than I will be able to get done today with my bum leg.

The 4H showmanship scorecard is also online somewhere you can print as well as the step by step 1950's booklet. Sorry, don't have access to my links right now or I would give it. Either through 4HMall or a county extension site.

We got to go to the clinic checoukan's club sponsored. It was awesome. Even the adults that came to drop kids off ended up asking to pay to stay. Covered far more than just showmanship. Not exactly like anything I've seen in Youtube vids or suspect took place when we went to a national. Funny because the judge at that national was the one that did the clinic. So far I've found showmanship to be different depending I think more on where you are (any traditions) and your competition, then maybe the judge adjusts his methods accordingly. I took one look at the kids in line at the national and knew my kid wasn't even in the running. No reflection on him, just vastly different here. The FFA or 4H group that was primarily represented, one look and you knew those kids were stiff competition, like scary good.

really! okay, so what was the difference with those kids? Did they just know more, or what? I'm completely clueless. My 4-H handed out a workbook that touched on Showmanship, but didn't go into any real detail-- it's the 1st year beginners guide. You'd think they would be more detailed in what you should know!
