PS-- loved your shirt-- I was still chuckling over that

Marcaustin, Loved your pictures. You need to save that last one for one of BYC's photo contests later this year. It's sure to be a winner.
Hawkeye, was Daren wearing his backyard flockers shirt? He and Michelle are awesome fun. Love them.
If you are going to be in Emporia in 2 weeks I would drive over there to meet you. Is that going to be the 7th? Is it at the Lyon County fair grounds? I can always do a shopping trip so I don't waste gas.
I'm pretty excited today. I went out and took some pictures of my new peafowl and made a phone call. The peafowl I am getting from the ex brother in law are one mated pair and two yearlings that he hasn't sexed yet. I could do handsprings. I have got to figure out a shelter for them. I called Sutherlands which was by far the cheapest price for building kits and they don't have anyone that does the actual construction for them from the Emporia store. Anyway he is bringing them over sometime around the first of the week.
I also measured for fence. I figured out I need 685 feet of fence to fence the front and one side of the yard. The fencing isn't bad but the posts will add up in a hurry.

Oh Marc I forgot to answer. Guineas are major bug eaters. They can eat like several thousand ticks and mosquitoes in one day. They are also good watch dogs. I sell several hundred a year.

Yes, it's at the Lyon County Fair grounds on the 7th! I need to get signed up for it, they just passed out the forms today and I saw the deadline was March 29th, so I better get that out on Monday! I'll grab the flyer later and let you know the details (time, etc). And yes, Daren was wearing his Flockers shirt! LOL That's too bad that Sutherlands doesn't have anyone to do the building! Bummer!! That's a big enough town, you'd think they would! Good luck with your peafowl! You'll have to get some pics, even if they aren't fully mature yet. :)

For those of you to whom I owe a message -- I'll get back with you soon. Someone asked where I am in regard to the free EE cockerels (sorry, don't remember who and too goofy to go back and look) I'm between Rose Hill and Derby.

Today, I was all over the place and enjoying the heck out of being here in the country on a lovely warm day when disaster struck. I was going down the ladder with a gift of fresh dandelions for the chickens when muddy boots caused me to slip about 3 rungs from the bottom. My left foot made a cushioned landing into the wood chips while my right foot landed on a concrete block strategically placed, apparently, for the purpose of maximizing injuries. The right muddy boot slipped off the block but the ankle did not. I made a quick trip to the ER and had it x-rayed and although it's impossible to bear any weight on it, it is not broken!! So I'm the luckiest, unlucky clutz I know!

It's terribly swollen and bruised. So, they gave me some pain pills, told me to stay off it and sent me home. I don't know how long a serious sprain takes to heal. Anyone want to hazard a guess? DH picked up a pair of crutches for me so I can get around some. So that's my big adventure for the day. Crapola!

Congrats, Hawkeye! I got such a kick out of your Silkies funny bath pics.

Danz, PM about the cost of Anconas -- don't need them today but one of these days that's just the type of duck I want.

Remember me, Trish, when you have lop babies. The kids are really excited about having a bunny!

I'm going to get some sleep now. Check ya later.

It was such a beautiful day outside! I got some grape vines, blue berry bushes and black berry bushes planted. :)
We also bought a kiddie pool and let all the birds play outside this afternoon:

Funny, DH was the one I had to talk into getting birds in the first place - he's hooked now:

MarcAustin, those are some great pics, I agree you should enter those in the contest when they have it, that last one should win. It looks like your chicks were having a super play day!

Hawkeye, congrats on your show, it sounds like you had a good time & did well.

KarenS, ouch! That sounds like something I would do honestly, have done something similar before. I'm a big clutz too & it seems like the older I get the worse it gets, which isn't good because you don't bounce like kids do. I probably won't have any lop babies, I'm considering whether to keep the lops or not. I'm paring down everything except my chinchilla & mini rex rabbits. I will however have chinchilla babies hopefully next month. They are a nice sized rabbit for kids to handle. If you handle them as babies they would tame right down. I bought this pair I got for breeding as adults & they have not been handled much, so I'm working to get them to trust me. I also have another younger pair that aren't old enough to breed yet. Anyway, I have decided to just focus on those two breeds. I don't think the mini rex would be as good for smaller kids, they're small & can be kind of skittish. I wish I had known you were going to sell some of your speckled sussex, I would have bought them from you rather than ordering from the hatchery.

tweety, that's so cute with your duckies in the pool, I'll bet they had a grand time! I saw several kinds of ducks today while I was in Wichita both at Atwoods & TSC. I was so tempted because they're so cute, but I resisted. I don't need ducks right now.

I had a full day of shopping & running errands today & my feet are killing me now, ugh. I told my DH I was leaving early today & sent him off to have a burger for lunch. I'm glad I didn't wait until he left for work to leave, as it was I didn't get finished with it all until 8:00 tonight & then I still had to drive home, so it was closer to 9 when I got here. My pups outside were upset with me because they hadn't been fed, the cats followed me all around until I fed them, & I found my Big Red rooster sitting on the front porch, I guess he's getting too big to get through the little wood hole to get in the pen, so I had to take him into the coop, so none of them were too happy with me. I could hear Big Red in the coop telling his whole story to the hens after I put him in. I'm sure he was saying how terrible I was for not coming back earlier & making him stay outside in the dark. Well guess what, I didn't come home with one chick! I thought to myself that if I found something I was wanting that I might end up with some, but I didn't find anything I couldn't live without. They did have some turkeys at Atwoods in Andover, but not the kind I was wanting, so I left them there. They were pretty though.

rvRoman-- was it you who asked about the poultry shows? Where they are? We are signed up in 4-H, and are doing the 4-H circuit. We just got back from Jefferson County and our next show is in 2 more weeks in Lyons county-- in Emporia. I hate to say it, but I really doubt they will let you sign up for 4-H right now... but I could be wrong! Your projects have to be turned in by February (at the lastest-- usually everyone is signed up in Jan). The show season moves at warp speed and there is show after show... etc. Now, I know there are Open shows around here, too. I don't know where those are. I do know there is one in Hutchinson, but I think it's in another month or two. When I find out the date, I can let you know if you're interested. We'll be doing that one too-- at least, that's the plan! Your child has to be 7 yrs old by sign up to be eligible to participate in 4-H. If they are 6yrs, they can participate as a ---ugh, I forget the name of it. BUt it's like a "little" but you have to have an older child already in order for the younger one to participate. I would HIGHLY recommend 4-H, because these people were ALL very, very nice and super helpful and they want everyone to do well. Plus there are so many other things to do in it, too. I did it when I was a kid, and it hasn't changed in the least. I showed chickens for several years when I was in 4-H. You are eligible to be in 4-H until you are 18 years old-- or your last year of HighSchool. So it's a good long time to spend with friends and networking with really decent people.

Thanks Hawkeye, looks like we will be waiting another 3-4 years, My oldest will be 4 in may.

Glad to hear y'all did so well with the silkies, I'm sure your son will always remember to take the bird out head first from now on. Its funny how something like that sticks with us always

Congrats Hawkeye.

Were they wooden multihole show/transport boxes? There is a guy from OK that comes up to KS sometimes who makes cheap to expensive....$35-$75ea range.

I don't know about anywhere else, but here our kids can join 4H year round as soon as they turn 7. I know nothing about a 4H show circuit though. We're not allowed to show in 4H outside of our county other than at state, unless we join a different 4H group in another county.
