Consolidated Kansas

I let my little hen out today with the rest of my flock & she did really well. She just went about picking around outside like she's been here forever. Oh, I got 3 more Ameraucana eggs today too, yay! I'm going to put a few EE eggs in with them to help fill in if I don't have enough for the incubator. I keep having people ask me for chicks, but I have waited forever for these two hens to start laying again. One of them lays a really pretty sky blue egg & the other lays one that is kind of blue/green. They insist on laying the eggs clear back in the back of the darned dog house so I have to crawl in there to reach them, uck, I hate having to get down in the chicken poop to collect eggs! So Taz, we may have some little chickies hopefully from your Blackie boy, he's been a busy guy, I hope we get some anyway, we'll see.

Yeah!!!!!!!

Howdy all,

Tweety- Those ducklings are growing like weeds! Where did you get your kiddie pool? I have to get one for the geese, once Sebastian's wound is healed, he is not allowed to swim for 10 days! Poor fella.

Hawkeye- CONGRATS to a successful first 4-H show! Sounds like your kiddos and silkies did great. So much fun, I was in 4-H as a kid and gotta tell you I liked it a lot better than dance class or swimming lessons.

We are doing some research on guns and I think I am going to stop at Cabellas this week to hold some to get an idea of what is comfortable. We haven't gotten one yet and we have only lived out here for a few months but I am gonna keep my eyes peeled for this coyote because our neighbor up the hill stopped by today and he was saying he saw a real scrawny lone coyote last fall that was running in his field while he was brush hogging hunting the rats and stuff that ran away from the tractor and he thought it was weird that it was so close to the tractor. Said he would have shot it if he had the chance to get his gun. I think that is my problem, I never would have grabbed for a gun that was locked up because I may not have made it in time before the coyote ran off with the poor guy but I will wait for him to come back and be practicing until then to hone my shooting skills. I was always good at darts so I am hoping that will help as I have no experience shooting yet!!! Maybe he will wait a few weeks to show back up, give me some time to get some good practice in.

Hope everyone enjoyed this gorgeous day!!!

Yeah, they are growing a lot faster than we thought they would!! Good thing the coop will be built within a couple weeks!
I got the kiddie pool at Walmart - 13 bucks. DH is wanting to just bury it within the duck run, but I'm trying to convince him otherwise. I want something that looks much nicer and I'm afraid that the plastic will crack over the winter. Anyone have an experience with that? We'll be getting a pump, so emptying it won't be an issue.

The younger group in 4-H is called Cloverbuds. :)

Beautiful day out today! I left the pup out of the pen all afternoon and he never wandered. He would trade between the front porch, the chicken pen and the duckling pen ^_^ That makes me so happy! It's exciting for me because I've not had a dog, other than my dearly departed Sheltie, that wouldn't wander...and that was after months of training.

Thank you for the confirmation on what breed of hens I had. I was first thinking Black Australorp, but the red made me think Black Star.

Hawkey-I just want to say congratulations to you as well as to the kids. It sounds to me like YOU did your homework in getting your kids ready for their first show. It makes all the difference in the world!

OUCH! On the ankles. I had a ladder "slide" on me one time. I was about 10-12 feet off the ground and I rode that baby down to the cement. I crashed hard! This was just a few months after I had my right total knee done. I was so afraid I had broken the prosthesis loose. As it turned out my knee was fine, but my heels and ankles were black, purple green and several other colors that are hard to describe. We were in the process of putting in our new house, so we didn't let it slow us down... much. I couldn't walk, so my wonderful DH wheeled me around in a wheelchair any time we went to Menards or anywhere else.

It's 5:00 a.m. and I've not been to bed yet, so I can't remember everything and everyone that posted, but I just want to say I loved looking at all the pics and the video, etc.

G'night folks!

Congrats Hawkeye.

Were they wooden multihole show/transport boxes? There is a guy from OK that comes up to KS sometimes who makes cheap to expensive....$35-$75ea range.

I don't know about anywhere else, but here our kids can join 4H year round as soon as they turn 7. I know nothing about a 4H show circuit though. We're not allowed to show in 4H outside of our county other than at state, unless we join a different 4H group in another county.
Thank you so much! Sooooooooo fun!!!!!

You're kidding!! Why aren't you allowed to show in other 4-H shows in other counties? Do you remember who told you that? (There on the form, it asks you which county and club you are with-- so I'm assuming this is done frequently) If you are interested in showing in other shows, check with your County Extension office, because that is certainly not the case here. (nor was it the case when I was a kid and we did this then, too) In fact, it was quite the deal for these poultry kids to start signing up for LOTS of various shows all over the state. The next one that I know of is in Emporia. There might be one down near you! If there is, we'll go! All of our results are turned into the Extension office and kept track of so that if we do win a purple-- then we can go to State (Hutchinson). That's our goal, so we'll keep doing the shows until that happens. It may not happen, but we'll give it a shot! If that were the case-- then what, you'd just get to participate in ONE show?? Or does your county plan for several shows? I'm not sure how you can learn anything well if you get to do one show a year and that's it. At this Jefferson show, they were telling the kids about the next nearby 4-H shows and encouraging them to go so they can keep on improving. I bet you would have been welcome to show up there with us and I'm betting you'd be allowed in at the Emporia one April 7th. I believe the hosting club makes sure to turn in your score points for you. I mentioned the 4-H circuit because they were joking that it is exactly that-- just like a rodeo-- on to the next county... next rodeo! LOL!! I'm guessing a lot of people call it that since that is what I heard. I don't know, this is our first year with my oldest, so maybe there is another appropriate word for hitting up as many shows as we can fit in. But I'll tell you one thing-- this is FUN!!

OH yes, the boxes were wooden boxes! But the ones I was talking about were singles and they had an arch to them so they could stand up and they were super neat! I'll try to get pics downloaded soon!! I'm sure everyone would love to see these, they were great transport boxes for any kind of occasion. I think it would be super easy to build them! I'm going to try it, too! :)

Tweety, great picture!! Have you thought about just building a pond with one of those rubber liners and just doing it up nice with a pump? That's what Danz has!

Thanks everyone! And yes Ivywoods-- I did exactly what your sister recommended, I made up flash cards and we just went over and over them for days. ANother tip I learned when we got to the show was that one of the moms to the older kids said she bought a stuffed chicken and then they practiced Showmanship on the stuffed chicken. Said they had an order to start at the beak, comb, head, etc.. to the wings and their feathers, and on... So I am going to hunt down a stuffed chicken that has flappy wings. She drew on the 3 feather groups onto the wings for her kid to practice with, so I'll do that too. I don't think Silkies have Axel feathers though--- I better go ask the silkie group if that is indeed the case. We were told that we had excellent shredding on our wing feathers by the judge.

Josie, good luck with your gun hunt. We have several here and they have always come in handy. ;)

Karen-- so sorry about your foot! I'm going to bet as bad as you sprained it, you'll be hurting for a good 2 weeks-- possibly 3!

Sapphireblue-- Cloverbuds, thanks! That is such a cute name! I wanted to sign up my middle boy, but he wasn't old enough yet-- he had to be 5yrs old by Jan 1st I think, and he wasn't. He turned 5yrs 3 weeks later. So neat they let the little kids participate, but not actually get judged. Good experience for them.

Hawkeye, was Daren wearing his backyard flockers shirt? He and Michelle are awesome fun. Love them.

Verna,
I would never wear taht shirt in public........lol.!
Gotta pimp those shirts when I can......hahahaha

Lora Lee,
It was great to put a face to the name. Man we are super stoked about those Call ducks I bought for Michelle's birthday. Those travel boxes Bill brought those birds in were great, I am gonna work on a few today. They are so simple to build. Any how soon as I get a chance I will do a pic thread here that will blow everyone's mind of our little duck and gamebird farm.
Again it was great to have met you and Congrats on the showmanship.

Daren

Thanks Daren!! Yeah, those ducks were adorable! I loved the boxes! I want to make a couple myself! But I would put two slats together on the bottom so the shavings/hay doesn't fall out of it. The rest of it was perfect! Yeah, it was so fun to meet you both! It was so funny-- I was just walking back from my van and and saw you and recognized you instantly!! Which is crazy, since of course, I didn't expect to see you there! ha! :)

eta: can't wait to see pics of your birds!

Our silkies being judged for Standard of Perfection-- he had Colter stand there and told him our birds faults and good points-- we didn't have many faults!

These two pictures are of the Showmanship-- I need to get him a white lab coat-- they said we needed one, but for his class, it's perfectly okay to show without it since they are starting out.

The two types of boxes I really liked. I LOVED the "round" boxes-- these are the ones that Daren's birds traveled in:
