I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I have a hen who at 16 weeks had an enormous bright red comb. There was never any doubt for me that she was a pullet but I posted a pic of her on a thread asking a different question altogether and just referencing her as a pullet, and was surprised to have an almost unanimous response, basically ignoring my actual question and insisting that she was a roo. Funny thing is, that thread kept going for so long that she was well and truly laying and I *still* had people posting saying she was a boy. It was actually kind of funny because there was one post saying "boy, 100% certain" and it was followed by a sheepish "Oh - just read that your hen is already laying...."![]()
Anyway, it just goes to show that sometimes they can get red early and not be boys. Here is the 16-week pic of my early maturing hen. The funny thing is, looking at it now, she looks like a very large, solid bird, when in fact she is actually a quite small, petite hen. Without the perspective of another bird in the pic for reference, photos can be deceiving.

Eating lunch while I skim BYC. I've already been out several times, moved birds around, fed and watered. I need to get to working on the coop, not sure how much time I have now before I better go take a shower. I'm already a mess from just this morning, geez. I know how to get dirty. CONGRATS on your youngest graduating from Kindergarten! My middle is getting ready to go into Kindergarten! I'm excited about that! My youngest still has one more year of Preschool left. I'll be glad when we don't have to pay for that anymore. I'm sure there will be something else to take it's place, but still... My oldest is finishing the 2nd grade and will be ready for the 3rd! Kind of blows my mind that I have a child so "old" now. It's going so fast. I'll miss seeing you there, Avery! -- oh and maybe you need to start doing the gardening from now on instead of telling DH how to do it! LOL I realized early on in my own marriage that things really only get done when I do them. Or nag him over and over. And my DH HATES nagging. So I decided to start doing. Now I try to do something before he gets home so he can't throw a fit or complain while I'm doing it. I've painted rooms, ripped up carpet, changed out door knobs... you name it, and if I have it done and looking nice before he gets home, it really lets the wind out of his sail. Also why I go buy trees and then plant them (or build an entire garden) before he gets home. No way do I want to argue over where to put them and fight over which kinds to buy! hehehee!! And if he ever read this, he'd be on to me. He might be already... ah well.I mainly skimmed last night and didn't go back to multi quote so........ My baby graduated Kindergarten last night and we all slept in today, so not even totally awake yet.![]()
AMs always seem to take me longer to sex than even the Silkies. I would in no way feel confident sexing from those pics. We seem to get mainly girls when we're hoping for boys, so maybe that's it.
I've lectured my DH about the benefits of lasagna gardening, but he likes to do everything the hard way.![]()
Hope everyone has fun today. Safe travels to those traveling there.
It looks like Rantoul is about 2 1/2 hours from me. You would be more to the east of Danz. I've never been in the Rantoul area, but I love to travel and go new places..... so it would just depend on my schedule, etc. I will be going back to work in a couple weeks (probably) and after that I have the weirdest schedule of anyone I know. I'm hoping I can get that changed one of these days.Ok, I really need to be getting on the road!!!!!!!!!!!! I am always running behind, I broke a darn finger nail on a chicken waterer yesterday of all things so I have had to use my left hand to do everything and it takes twice as long!!!
Ivy- That puppy is too stinkin cute!!!! What a doll!! Wish you could make it, maybe one of these days I could have a chicken folks party at my place, that wouldn't be too bad a drive for you would it? I'm not 100% sure how far you are from me but I am maybe 45 minutes north of Danz and a bit west I believe.
Can't wait to meet everyone!
She is in her silly little pink leotard already this morning. Put herself in it before I could fight with her. UGH. Maybe today is not the day to fight that battle with her. She wants to wear it ALL the time. I'm going to look like a bad mama for letting her wear that thing. It's getting pretty beat up.Yay!!! Wednesday! Looking forward to seeing you all! Every Wednesday Rose Hill schools start an hour late. So, before the kids left for school, I had them help me move the chicken's fence to a new area. I've visited all my birds, made up the fruit & vegie trays and threw in cheese and crackers for good measure. Now all I need is to get myself in the shower! Oh well, I could tidy the house, but what fun would that be?Don't anyone look at my dust. Because we live on a dirt road it is always dusty. I've decided to collect it instead of fighting it. Hee hee. Looking forward to seeing everyone who can make it!![]()
Hawkeye, don't worry about how your kids behave while here. Everyone knows 3 year olds are notoriously unpredictable. I've been through it enough times to know that everyone's child is unpredictable at 3. Let her wear her leotard or swimsuit. That'll be one less battle you'll have to fight. Fair warning, the kids have an old sand box that your children may be attracted to. Don't put them in anything too cute. Our swingset is out of order until I get the new swings, etc. ordered. Sorry 'bout that! I do have a couple big kids here who are very used to entertaining littles so no worries.
Better get going. Ivy, I'll take pics and post for everyone!
