Consolidated Kansas

It's great, isn't it? Sometime when you are going that way, let me know and maybe we can meet for lunch. I'd like to meet you. Maybe a bunch of us from the area could meet there at noon sometime. It is a pretty kid-friendly place.

Sharol
Whoever asked, there is a Pizza Ranch in Emporia and they were supposed to put one in Manhattan but I don't know if that has happened yet. It's awesome food at a very low price for the buffet and they also have some of the best chicken around. We were told they are trying to expand to college towns because the business is so awesome with that crowd.

No news on the dog. Every time my phone rings I race for it but so far nada. I went back and looked for her first thing this morning and drove that route again multiple times today. I just wish someone would see her and call me.

I predict your DS will grow up to be an inventor or engineer

HEChicken, I was so hoping to sign on and read that your dog had come home. She looks like a dog I had growing up and sounds like her too. I know you must miss her. I will keep hoping!!
Your son is a riot! He also shows a lot of curiosity and intelligence, not to mention creativity!

I tried to post this earlier, but for some reason it wouldn't go through: I think you might be OK with your EEs. By 11 weeks, I could definitely tell a difference between the roos and the pullets. The roo combs were not the brighter red of my older birds, but they were definitely red, not pink. They were also showing the multiple rows on their combs while the pullets still had only one row, and it was shorter than those of the roos. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Thanks all.... My two littles have definitely added spice to my life :) There is never a dull moment that is for sure!

I am going to keep hoping about the EE too, but am not holding my breath as tightly on that. I would prefer the dog comes home!! :)

I took some photos of them today so that I could study their back feathers a bit better than having them running around me. I think so far they are rounded, at least for one of the white ones and my true ameracauna. The other one seems a bit spikier, but still rounded a bit too. I guess time will tell. If it is a roo, they will be a pretty pair. I told my kids about the wheaten ameracauna and my oldest, 14 did some research. She likes that color, but also found some photos of supposedly blue wheaten ameracauna pullets with gray feathering and some brown on their wings and neck. She thought that sounded like the other EE that we have that was from the ameracauna pullet bin. She also saw lots of roosters like that. Who knows! I have never enjoyed gambling before, but this is a bit different. There are so many different colors, breeds and personalities of the birds, I guess I am coming to the point where if we discover we have a roo, we will have learned lots about the breed in the process and learning new things can't be all bad! :)

This is our little EE pullet.

And this is Sera's "Splash"? or supposed to be white Silkie. See we learned that it has a color name we hadn't understood before! And we looked at lots of different silkie combs.... all of which look nothing like our Chloe, who really may be laying Sera some eggs!

But I guess I'm going to be busy with all these crested breeds in the next couple days or so. What was I thinking? I keep saying I'm downsizing but keep adding more birds and pens and houses.

Enjoy what you enjoy! It is obvious those beautiful birds all make you happy! :) And BTW..... My son, who struggles with language issues at times, was telling a friend about having gone out to your place and seeing the big dogs, peacocks, ducks etc...and he couldn't come up with the word " farm" so he told her," We went out to a bird zoo today :) It had more birds in one place than I have ever seen in an animal zoo! It even used dogs as zoo keepers" ( From my trying to explain that the dogs protect the chickens from predators)

After my daughter researched wheaten ameracaunas, we all looked up chicken coop plans again. It has become quite the family project! I am guessing we need windows..... Right?

Medawinks-- At 3 months, you'd expect to see a bit more comb for a boy, I'm really going to guess girl! I think you'll have a layer. :) Oh- and she is not white, I'd guess Splash and see if her spots come in. I'm guessing they will come in soon, she looks like my older splash.

The Pizza Ranch sounds like fun! I LOVE that place! We find them in little towns we pass thru up near KC and eat there. Maybe if it's in Emporia, I could meet up! That's not too bad of a drive.

Sticky isn't doing so great tonight. I don't know what is wrong with that chick. It hatched on it's own, but then as you recall, was super sticky and could barely move. Well, now it's laying around all the time. I have it on sugar and electrolyte water, but it doesn't seem to be eating. If it's alive tomorrow, I'll give it some yogurt in a syringe. It's too small to eat anything else. And it didn't look bad until tonight-- today it seemed alright. Sigh. :(

Ummmm, I can't remember what I read... must figure out how to do multiple quotes

Hawkeye- Thanks for silkie advice, I think I will sell the splash silkie cockerel. He has split wings and I don't like his bad attitude. I didn't know that Jenn was still in Lawrence, I thought she moved to Colorado??? I may have to shoot her an email. I have wanted some nice buckeyes.

Danz- I had a one day funk yesterday, fell asleep on the sofa at 4 in the afternoon but feel better today. Do you have allergies? I started back on allegra and I feel so much better! Maybe all that cleaning in the brooders stirred up a lot of chicken dust, that always bothers me when I clean.

IVY- I want some RP poults so bad!!!! Are they too young to bring to Topeka on Saturday? I would love to me you too!! I am afraid if I go I will just buy something I don't need... OH, the pony. Yes he ran wild for 12 years and isn't gelded. I tied him to a fence post for 2 1/2 days (mostly because he kept getting untied or breaking ropes) I finally found one that he couldn't break. So he wasn't really tied for a solid 2 1/2 days, just intermittently until I thought he had gotten the memo. He is a bit better after that and now he is in that ridiculous pen in our backyard!!! It was DHs idea which surprised me but it was a good one because he can't see the other horses with the privacy fencing! He needs some serious manners.

Meda- Tell your daughter that silkie won't lay very many eggs because silkies lay 3 eggs and then go broody!!

My are perpetually trying to sit.

Hechicken- I am still holding out hope for your pup, maybe she just went on a wild and crazy run through the woods for a while and is working her way back to the farm. Or maybe someone picked her up. My neighbors found a beagle and they waited three days to put up a darn poster that they found the dog!

Alrighty, I must finish evening chores and make sure everyone is tucked in. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting turkeys to come in at night? My four poults love to free range and they come right up to the pen at night and lay by the gate!!! Why don't they go in??? The chickens go in....

Has anyone heard from Roman or Chooks????

Holy crow...I'm finally caught up!
Unfortunately, nothing exciting on my end. LOL
Well, I did get 200 ft of electrified poultry netting with double spiked rods and a solar charger from Premier yesterday. It wasn't supposed to arrive until tomorrow, so I'm happy about that. Now hopefully DH and I can get out and get it put up tomorrow morning. I guess that's kind of exciting :) I know the birds will be happy to have more room, since they've grown so much this past month. If we like this fence, we will get more. Fortunately, I have nothing going on tomorrow, so I can pretty much just sit and watch the dog and the birds all day to make sure they learn the fence bites and stay off of it. Keep your fingers crossed for me

I could certainly use a solution that comes off without a hitch for a change.

RVroman-are you sure the little EE roo I got from you is an EE? I just wonder because his legs are yellow and he doesn't have muffs like my EE's do. I love him anyway, but was just curious if he could be anything else.

Leroy is second in command of the pen now. Only under my Big Guy, a BR that's just a bit sassier than him. Helen/Herman is quite taken with his girlfriend, Daphne. I thought it was cute that he just seemed to like her from the get go. I never made him stay with her or anything...chicken love at first sight, perhaps, lol.

Sarge is getting big. He has those big ol' long teenager legs now and his puppy fur is slowly being replace by big dog fur. He has a bunch of mulberry stains on him, I guess the chickens are tired of the mulberries now.

Ummm...I guess that's it on my end. Danz, hope you feel better soon. Pikeman, hope your build goes well. Everyone with new babies, WOOHOO. Sorry about those that didn't make it. HEchicken, I hope your dog is found soon. Anyone else, sorry if I missed you!

I have a reason for sitting here posting so often. My excuse is I can only stand to be on my feet for about an hour or so, then I sit down and rest them.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

The turkeys that just hatched: Royal palm, blue slate and some mixes of the two and one lone guinea (the lavender one to the right in the pic.) I loved the way some of them were sitting there on their fat bottoms looking up at me.

I had no idea this many would hatch. I've had pretty good hatches in the past, but this one was nearly 100%. Now if I can just get them past that critical 2 week stage!

A little closer shot. They are so fat and lazy at this point. Well, I better go finish up that new brooder area for them. Obviously there are too many to stay in that little tote!
Those sure are looking good.Might have to get some from you if you have any extras.
It's looking more and more like I will be going to the swap in Topeka Saturday.

Any requests?
Yes,I have one!!!!!!!! Work for me and I will go to the swap.LOL You know I always need more chickens.PM me what you have and prices.Looking for a few more.My chicken math is not adding up right.
Well I got 20 ducks, and 41 chickens in cages and I'm still waiting to hear from my buyer. She said it would be after noon but I expected earlier than this. She has always been dependable so I'm not freaking but I hate to leave the birds without water for long. Plus they are very crowded.
I am afraid I am getting sick. Maybe getting the Karen stuff. I have a terrible headache, my lymph nodes in my neck are swollen and my throat is getting sore. Of course all that could be a combination of allergies and possibly sleeping wrong last night. I guess I'll know by morning. Any time I get my neck turned the wrong direction it kills me. It is fused not to turn so it reacts violently. I broke down and took some pain meds but it hasn't helped a lot yet.
I also got all my peppers planted and am trying to water them. Two of my tomato plants are broken off and there's two more sections in the garden dug up. At least the fence is in now except the last section. I just pulled the wire over to the gate in hopes that would keep the dumb dogs from thinking I had tilled that up for them to play in.
Medawinks I think Sera would really enjoy the swap at Premier. Some of the sellers are kind of picky but surely some of them would let her hold a bunny or something. I was telling the girls about your son dismantling every thing. That's so funny.
To all of you who haven't had the privilege to meet her, let me tell you Sera is even more adorable than her picture. She is s real sweetie.
Kare, I'm glad you are happy with your girls. The one was a cross between a silver laced polish and a silver laced Wyandotte. The other was a Salmon Favorelle cross. The small one was a light brahma. Your chickens will get used to them in time. They are strangers you know. They will have to establish a pecking order amongst them.
My sister called and wants to come out and visit. I am not prepared for visitors and DH is trying to sleep so he can work tonight. Maybe she'll get here in time to load birds. She is NOT a chicken person. In fact she isn't an animal person at all.
So assuming I'm not sick and I have no more surprises I might be coming to Topeka Saturday morning to the meet. I need to sell some more chicks. I have a guy coming from quite a ways into Missouri to buy up all the Seramas except a few and I'm not sure what time to expect him.
Sure wish I could make the swap on Sat. Would love to get some more of those polish!

Sorry, Bama. I can't work for you that day. I would be lost! You'll just have to come by and pick some up. I've got quite a few right now, but will be taking the majority to Topeka, so I don't know what I will come back with. I do have poults can sell. I've still got more incubating, and I've got quite a few fertile hatching eggs, too, if you've got that incubator running.

Josie-Yes, I will be bringing some of the poults to Topeka. All are doing well so far!

Gotta run to a Dr. appt. Later, folks!

Ahhh, so tempted to buy a RP poult off of you! But at least I know you can make more! If we don't end up having to move, I'm getting me a baby RP! Maybe I'll call it George this time since I know I will love him and hold and pet him and drag him around everywhere! LOL Seymore rode in the car with me several times up to Atwoods, etc.. Nah, he's going to need a much more dignified name, than George. I'll have to think about it. I sure loved the name Seymore, it will be hard thinking up a better name. Maybe something like Cornelius or Orville.

I am trying to get a little video of the 2 Ancona ducks I got from Danz last summer. They love to play with our big black lab. She just lays down and lets them crawl all over her and the peck at her like they are cleaning her fur. So funny! They even put their head in her mouth! Hopefully I will get a video and post it.

Danz, I am glad your buyer came by! Hope you are feeling better.

Medawinks and Ivy -- Hope to meet you at the swap on Sat. If you see a tall gray haired lady wandering -- that would be me. My name is Karen. How can I recognize you.
