I left and went outside to feed. My cat wrote this. She must have been excited about something!

I'm not even sure how she did that. She must have had one foot on the o, 0,and - keys.

KarenS, so sorry you are still feeling so badly! I hate coming down with a bug or a cold when the weather is nice.

I feel so ignorant about everything, because all of you on this forum seem to know so much about all kinds of birds!! I just love a bird because of how pretty it seems to me and I don't really care what breed it is-- but that may change as I learn more about the different kinds of chickens. This broody Silver Lace Polish and Silver Lace Wyandotte cross I got from Danz, I just love her! She is so pretty. Then I saw Danz' Brahma's and fell in love with them. I think I need to quit going and looking at chickens. Perhaps if I keep reading these forums I will learn a lot more!!

And thus why a trip to Danz's farm would result in me bringing home more chicks! Especially if I took my daughter and son. :)

Tweety- Here is the link to the post on craigslist, I don't know where the original post is on here. http://topeka.craigslist.org/grd/2978945483.html.
Hey alll!! I have a friend here at work that wants to go to the swap in Topeka on Saturday, wondered if you could give me the details of where it is. i can't find the post with the original information. :)

Hope this finds everyone well! Been busy still :)

Hi all
Thanks for the comments -- it just seems like you all know so much that I had assumed you have had chicks for years and years! I agree with you KarenS that the chickens are very relaxing for me too! I love to go out and see my ladies and what they are doing!

My little Cornish, that I am hoping goes broody, has made herself a little nest and has 3 eggs in it already. I have had her for about 3 weeks now so I am sure she is not laying fertile eggs but I will swap her eggs for guinea eggs.

Hope to meet lots of you on Saturday! P.S. should I take our dog carrier with me????????????? or should I assume that I have enough birds and won't be buying any????????
Kare

Hawkeye, how's that chick doing by now? Hope it's still hanging in there.

Have a good day everybody!
Karen, yeah, Sticky (i've decided his name is Sticky) is doing better today. He's still not "great", you know? I'm pretty sure he would have died by today if I had not used the syringe to feed him egg yolk several times yesterday. He was having such a hard time swallowing and eating. He couldn't get any of the chick starter in his mouth. I saw him try several times, and it just never went in. I finally took Josie's advice and put some starter in a lid and soaked it with water! And THEN-- all the chicks went NUTS! It was like they were screaming "we can eat! We can Eat!! WE CAN EAT!!" and it was chaos in there as they all were gobbling up the soaked food. I'll be sure to do that from now on with my silkie hatches. Anyway, I can still tell who Sticky is, and I'm going to band him so I will always know who he is. He's eating now (the wet food), but it seems like I have to remind him to drink every now and then. He's hanging in there. I still wouldn't be too surprised if he died, but I sure hope not! I'm trying!! I hope you're feeling better today! I love summer vacation too! Lots of fun things to do with the kids. AND I get to sleep in.

Thanks Josie for that info!!

Prairie, we all keep learning all the time about chickens & other poultry, even if we have had them for years, I don't think you ever stop. I had chickens years ago when my son was little & we raised some other animals for meat, but I didn't think much about them at the time other than wanting eggs from them. I just got the ones I thought were pretty & gave us eggs. We did raise a few meat birds one year & had fresh chicken in the freezer for awhile.

HeChicken, they have these strap things you can hook into your seat belt & clip onto their collar. We got two of them for our little dogs for when we just go short distances. They're adjustable & you can make it so they can't go off the seat, but can move around. I would recommend that to you for your dog's safety in the car. I sure would hate to see you lose one again. I got mine off of eBay & they weren't expensive.
Prairie-- I agree with HeChicken and Trish-- we all learn things because we are doing them. I'm into the showing and breeding right now-- but I have a lot to learn. And I ONLY know silkies. Don't ask me anything about showing any other breed of chicken! LOL (unless it's Polish, and then I know a little) And a common theme on the entire BYC site has been that back yard "mutts" are better layers than pure breeds. Don't know why that is, but seems to be a running trend with posts.

Trish, you are busy, busy! I hope those other waterers work out for your bunnies. I need to get some work done today, too. Need to muck out my breeze way in the barn, etc-- tonight when it cools down. Too hot right now! Yikes!

Oh, and yes, my doggies have "seat belts". They look like a harness and then they clip onto the seat belt. Keeps them from getting too close to the window. Mine WOULD jump out for sure!!! So the seat belt keeps them down. They can still move around and turn around, just not enough to jump out. I bought mine at PetSmart.

That is one talented cat!! It is a perfect pattern! WOW!

Hope you make it, Tweety. I'm hoping there's a good turn out of folks from Consolidated Kansas.... and, well, I'm hoping to sell a few birds!
I'm going to miss the swap!! So sad!!! :( I hope all of you have a great time! If we do an Emporia meet up, I'll be game for that. But we're really, really busy this weekend and the swap is out of the question.

Prairie, I am much more of a newbie :) You at least grew up with chickens . I avoided them at friends houses and was scared of them even. I resisted getting 4-5 hens for eggs when my housemate suggested it.
Now... I am hooked to chicken TV and prefer to be watching my birds ..... I greatly enjoy learning more about them too! Things I never knew existed or cared to know before. Something about them is just plain therapeutic, or at least that is what I am trying to convince myself :)

Yes... I have more than the original 4-5 also, but I can't count them until I know which ones I get to keep :).

Yes.... Bring your dog carrier:). I am :)

So, today hasn't been much better...
I went out to check on everybody this morning, and one of my BR roos was dead. Sarge was laying there with it, plucking feathers, so I assumed he had gotten a bit too rough "playing" with it and had broke his back or something. He got scolded big time! I watched them off and on for awhile, and everything was okay, so I figured, just a fluke. I thought, "well, dummy, what was I to expect after putting in so many "new toys" for him to take care of?"
Around 9am, I had to go into town to get my sister and niece. Sis was helping me get some projects finished so I could worry less when we leave Friday. Well, when we got to the house, ANOTHER chicken was dead! Or so I thought. This time it was one of my EE's that I was going to give my sister, since she was the friendliest. I grabbed that dog and hollered "NO! BAD DOG! WHAT DID YOU DO?!" and smacked him in the schnoz with the bird. My sister yells, "She's not dead!" poor bird was just barely hanging on. The skin around her neck had been torn open and she was just limp as could be. I did the only humane thing I could think of and put her down. Now I had 2 dead birds and I was LIVID! Sarge's feelings were so hurt he just slinked around and went to pout in the corner in the shade the rest of the time we were out there.
Now comes the interesting part...sis and I got a cage finished built and the whole time we had been working, I was watching that dog like a hawk. I hear one of the birds making a fuss, so I go over to see which bird is squawking and about what. She was fine, but there was another hen laid out in the dirt, half dead! At this point, I'm like, WHAT THE HELL???!!! So I go in to see how bad she is and she has the feathers on her back pulled out and neck skin ripped open. While I'm looking her over, I notice another BR roo's neck is the same way. It dawns on me...THE BIG ROOSTER is doing this! He has never hurt another bird in his life, even the newbies!
Well there's my lesson for the day folks. I had no choice but to throw them all together yesterday (trying to save their lives from the wind) and here I've killed them. I'm so mad at myself right now and I feel so bad for scolding Sarge. I just feel miserable and sorry for myself right now. I was just sick with those 2 left alive being so torn up, but I didn't know what to do. I rounded up the 2 big roos just to be safe, then de-spurred the major culprit, then put them both in seperate cages. I made a run into town and got some Vetericin (sp) and blue spray to treat the spurs and the 2 remaining half-dead chickens. I also got some electrolyte powder. I treated the birds and put them in a carrier with the electrolyte water, but I don't know that they're drinking. I've been checking on them every so often and helping them drink. I have no hope that they will make it, but I had to try. If anyone has experienced a similar scenario, please share with me. All new comers, now you know what NOT to do; let my big stupid mistake be an example to you.
