Consolidated Kansas

Danz, I don't think anyone would dare drive down the road with Ta there!!! I can't believe anyone would be brazen enough to try to get past your dogs either.... I wish it was easier to feel safe in this world. I have a huge barking dog I keep as an indoor dog and a security system, due to vandals from my past. My little dogs sound the alarm pretty well also.I constantly wish for iron bars on windows and doors like what is customary in southern NM. Maybe you need several Beware of Dog signs and some laser alerts at the edges of your driveway that sound an alarm? Turn it off when you are home or don't need them?

Has Marshmallow ever worn a harness? I can manage my big guy best with a harness and two leads could be used? She is definitely a big beautiful girl. Wishing you the best outcomes today!

I could put a harness on her if I had one. I had one on Cloud but she chewed it off! I looked in town yesterday and there wasn't any there. Just stuff for tiny dogs. Had this not been a 2 day turn around I might have planned better and gotten her a harness or something. I set up a kennel for her under the tree where the ducks go to eat bugs at night so at least she can sit out there at night and bark at coyotes if she wants. I'd rather just let her in the house during the day because she likes the AC and an afternoon nap.
Maybe I can find some time to do some shopping in the next day or two. I just hate that it takes me an hour or so just to get anywhere to buy anything! If I can talk the vet into some pain meds like Josie suggested that should help.
There's another Utube video of Ta taken the same show on obedience, right after the one I posted. You can tell by watching it that she is a well trained dog. She was the second Boerboel ever titled with AKC. Her sister was the first. They come from South Africa and are used to protect people from Lion attacks. She is trained in obedience and protection. My dogs aren't trained in anything. Just being good bird guardians. Crazy! My daughter makes her living training dogs and I can't even put mine on a leash!
I still need to empty my incubator. I finally got the guy to come over last evening and pick up his turkeys I hatched. He was pretty pleased. I hope he keeps them alive. I gave his daughter a dove last week and his cats killed it. He has several baby chicks I sold them last week as well so I think he is going to put them in with the chicks for now. They've consistently gotten birds from me to show for 4H and I all but give them to them. It's kind of a trade thing between us. I will get some straw or something from him in return.
Well I'd better get moving or I won't make it to the vets in time.

Good morning all! What a glorious morning!! We got rain!! 3/4" but that is better than none. Hope you all that live down by Wichita and other places with the high wind are okay this morning. I think Hutch got some really high wind too!

Anyway, all my birds are running around like crazy this morning in pen -- like it is spring to them. Of course it is really cool -- about 60 degrees I think. I still have the babies in hubby's woodshop overnight and bring them to the coop when the day gets warmer.

Ivy you should see how the little baby has grown! I am so glad I got the baby too -- at least now I know I can take care of the babies. Wish I had bought about 10 more keets -- wouldn't have been any more trouble!

Have a wonderful cool day everyone!

Don't you all love this weather! We got 1/3" of rain last night -- first rain in weeks.

We got rain, too! We get skipped all the time. It will rain all around us, but not here. My brother says we live in a hole where we don't get the rain, hail, snow or tornadoes like the towns all around us. Sometimes that's good and sometimes not so good. We can water and water at the garden, but nothing makes it thrive like a little rain.

Well it finally happened and I am ticked.

Someone stole some birds. I have a couple guinea missing from the guinea pen. I noticed because I had two lavender girls in there and there is only one. I wasn't sure exactly how many guineas I had but at least one or two others are missing as well. Most likely hens.
Also at least 3 of my production hens are gone. I wouldn't know unless I watched for a few days what is missing from the other groups because they free range and I just know by watching for a couple days if something is missing. Of course it is easier to take your pick from a pen.
I can't believe any one is that fricking brave. I was only gone for maybe an hour to the vet yesterday. Other than that someone has been here full time. That is it though! I have got to find someone to put my fence up. I sent a text to a guy hoping he would get back to me.
Josie, I set up a huge kennel to get Marshmallow loaded in tonight. That might be a job. I could probably coax her in with bacon but the other two dogs would be trying to beat her in there. This is not going to be fun. But I will keep reminding myself that it is better than loosing her if she gets PG again. I think I'll set up a chain link kennel in the shade near the back door so she can go out in the evening to bark. She won't go to the bathroom in the house or in a kennel so I'll have to let her out for that. I worry she will get sick and die. I've had all kinds of animals spayed before but she is special.

I can't believe someone would just come and take your chickens. Keep a careful eye out because how did someone know this was the time you weren't home?

I'll keep my fingers crossed for Marshmallow. I'm sure she'll come through it well.
I only left for about an hour yesterday and I left Marshmallow in the house. She would be the one to show aggression and then Fluff follows her lead. It had to be someone who has been here before and found out where I kept what. I have a couple of people in mind. They came here and acted suspicious to me. And they had to know I left. How else could they have timed it? I have been saying all along that this might happen and I had stopped giving out my address and directions unless someone made a specific appointment to be here. I had too many no shows before. I've done very little advertising this year and sold by word of mouth just for that reason. However before I discovered the missing birds I put an add on Craigslist today for guineas.
At any rate I have a fencer working on a quote for me. Wish I could find someone closer.
Marshmallow will be out of commission for a while so my best guardian isn't going to be available. I told DH I wish I had one of my daughters boerboels around right now. There would be no one coming on the property at all. Here's a video taken last weekend at a dog show in Austin. Be sure to have your sound on. This is my daughter and one of her dogs. Bet there would be no bird stealing if Ta ( her dog) was here.

Anyway I easily got Marshmallow in the crate with a couple pieces of bacon and then DH helped me pick it up and get it in the truck. How we will get her out and into the clinic will be another problem.

Ta is amazing. It would scare me off!

I'm envious. We have not had rain all spring, and we barely got enough to settle the dust. This is the driest it has been since we moved up here. My grass and clover crunches underfoot like dry leaves in the fall. It's getting critical for the corn. Many fields of soybeans haven't even had enough rain to germinate, but maybe that's good. Maybe we will have more rain by the time they do germinate.

I had quail hatching in the incubator this morning. DH forgot they are coturnix and hatch in 17 days. I hope he gets a good hatch with them. I'm going to try to get another pen ready for them outside soon. I need to clean the pen for the ones outside already. They sure poop a lot. My door to the pen is so big I'm afraid they are going to fly out over my head when I try to clean, so I am going to devise some kind of screen to slide in the door and push them and hold them to the back while I clean out the floor. The way the pens are built they are really easy to clean. It's just a matter of keeping the birds in while I do it.

Danz-Good luck with Marshmallow today. I sure hope it goes smoothly for her. I had never heard of the kind of dog your daughter is handling. Wow. I don't think I would mess with one of those! Our society is so messed up, though. If you had someone come onto your property and a dog attack them they would probably turn around and sue you. Whether you win or loose the case, you still end up having to defend yourself, your dog and pay a lawyer.

We haven't had a lick of trouble since we put up surveilance cameras. We did that at the suggestion of our sherriff who lives straight west of us. Funny thing... shortly after that he had his sherriff's truck parked at his house where he has surveillance, too. Someone came in and badly vandalized the truck in some sort of revenge thing. Not sure if they didn't have their surveillance on or what, but they didn't get the person. I'll bet he keeps it on now!

Well my luck is typical to my life! I got in the truck with Marshmallow in the dog kennel she had been penned in all night long. But as soon as the truck started moving she just freaked out. She broke out of the back end of the kennel. Just forced herself right through it. This is a big 48" long kennel made for huge dogs. Then she started trying to put her nose through the open window on the cab part of the camper. I had to stop and pull the side windows shut because she could have opened them and gone right through them. I had them open so she could get air. I thought if I opened the slider on the pickup that and talked to her it would calm her. So I did that. Big mistake. Next thing I knew she had both sliders forced open and had half of her body in the cab of the truck. I had to stop and force her back into the camper or we would have wrecked for sure.
When we got to the clinic and opened the camper back window gate, she acted like she was going to bolt, so the vet slammed the window gate down. When he did it caught me on the cheek and ripped a big gash in my face. She actually easily came out of the truck and into the clinic on a leash. She was just glad to get out of the truck. Well then he started giving her the meds to put her asleep. He gave her the maximum dose and she never went down. She just fought it every step of the way. He finally said she wouldn't go down and he could give her no more anesthesia so we'd have to take her elsewhere that did small animal work and had gas. So we loaded her back up and I brought her home.
I got her out of the truck after while and lead her to the house. She is now sleeping like a log.
I made a couple calls hoping I could just take her somewhere today but there was too much danger of mixing anesthesia. So I ended up making an appointment for her for next Thursday to go to Garnett. I am very pleased with the people I talked to and the vet actually performing the spay has already called back to talk to me. They are mailing me a sedative to give her an hour or so before loading her next week so she will be easier to handle.
I guess I need to rebuild the kennel so it will hold her next time. So I have a sleepy unspayed dog and a wicked cut on my face to show for my efforts.
After all that was settled I was emptying the incubutor. I had chicks, ducklings, guineas and a couple pheasants in there.
I decided to just put the new pheasants with the older ones I have. One of the older ones flew out and is now hiding behind a file cabinet that I can't possibly get to . I guess I just have to wait him out and hope the cats don't think he is dinner in the meantime. I took the new chicks to the brooder but haven't done any other care or feeding. I just need to take a chill pill for now. I'm not much of a drinker but a nice stiff drink or a couple glasses of wine would sure help.

Sharol, When I met you last Saturday I forgot that you lived in Admire --- I live near Burlingame -- we're really close neighbors!

My sister out east of Topeka got nearly 1 1/2" -- wish we would get more rain.

Since the weather is so cool we have shut the AC off and I am cooking beets to pickle them and then have snow peas to get in the freezer. Then probably a nap - cause I didn't sleep well with the storms!

Cherwill, I was wondering about you because I heard Hutch and Wichita really had high winds. Glad you didn't have the storms but praying for rain soon!

Ivy, I am hoping our sweet corn makes it but unless we get more rain we sure won't have any. We water the garden with pond water so that does help but the sweet corn patch is too big to water.

Danz, you have really had a day!! Hope the gash heals up fast!
