Consolidated Kansas

So Josie, Like the others I think I would call or go over and talk with the folks -- and it was a great idea to take them a doz eggs. We live way out in the country too but everyone around here knows that a dog will get shot if it leaves home and bothers a neighbor -- kinda an unwritten rule around here -- no matter how much we love our dogs. About 18 yrs ago we had a new neighbor and his dog killed one of our turkeys and then took after one of our baby calves. Hubby went and talked with them and they gave the dog away. They felt really bad about it and were really nice about having to give up their dog. Good luck!

As you people that have been here a while know, I had a dog problem here with a neighbors dog that was stealing eggs. I never got the nerve to talk to them and I finally took a shot toward the dog. I never saw it again. Rumor has it one neighbor a mile and a half north shot it because it was chasing his cattle. Fluff used to run quite a bit when he was young but as he has matured he stays home most the time. The dogs always go for a morning swim. They were going to my pond but I noticed the last two mornings they aren't muddy but they are wet. I am guessing that Fluff is taking Cloud to the creek for a swim. That is Okay as long as they don't start running up the creek bed. I used to live in fear that someone wouldn't know them and think they might chase their cattle. There is no way on earth they would chase cattle but some people don't know that. That is one of those reasons I want a fence on the front of my property. Just a little discouragement from getting too far away. They've got 20 acres to play on they shouldn't need more than that.
I'm thinking I might build a hoop house for my turkeys next. I am going to need a place to keep my Midget Whites. I'm still trying to decide what to do about the blue slates. Every time I think I have them sexed another one changes a little and I get confused. I thought I had 2 and 2 but now I'm starting to wonder if I don't have 4 females. I don't know how old they will have to be before it is blaringly obvious. They are about 5 and 6 months old right now.
Time to get my act together and go get Marshmallow.

Thanks all, I will go up and talk with them. I know dogs get out now and then and beagles are particularly hard to keep in but the dog has been here several times this week and I don't want it around. They seem like nice folks and I am sure they will try to keep the dog at home.

Danz- Here is a pic for you of this ridiculous goose and his two duck buddies. The geese must be adjusting to their duck admirers because they are letting them get a lot closer these days! The ducks follow the geese all over the yard while they free range.

Aw! that is cute. Just wait till your new girls get old enough. They'll join the parade. Josie, I had Marshmallow checked and she has no bugs or infections in her skin so she is suffering from allergies. I got her some prednisone to give her after she heals from the surgery. I am so glad that I can finally address that issue.
Marshmallow is home and sleeping. She did excellent on the ride home. I am really glad I took the car instead of the truck. I think the air conditioning and being able to nudge me with her nose every now and then really helped. She is such a mama's girl.
I need to get out and finish feeding and watering. I am just feeling exhausted today. I really need a staycation for a day or so. I have so much to do. I was going to take eggs to the farmer's market but I may just deliver them to my neighbors for free. I just don't have time to sit around and sell eggs this week.
I need to do some cooking today too for my sons birthday party tomorrow.
I need to figure a way to separate the hens and pullets I want to keep from the ones I plan to sell. I've got to get the numbers down soon.
Well better get to it!

Danz- I am so glad Marshmallow is doing well and I am sure the pred will get her all cleared up! Molly's poor nose is finally healing up and the hair is just starting to grow back. It is so hard to manage a dog with allergies outside because they are into everything! And then the flies get on it....sigh. She skinned her paw pad chasing a darn truck down the gravel road the other day so now we are doctoring that. I will be so glad when we get them trained to the invisible fence so she can't run out into the road. I am so scared she is gonna get hit one of these days.

The one duckling's crest is getting HUGE!! She is so silly looking right now because it is so fuzzy. I kicked them outside with the group of chicks I have in a pen out there because they were making a wet nasty mess in that brooder!

disclaimer, I have no connection with Wellness pet food except that of a satisfied customer.

Our 4 year old male dacshund had skin problems from the day we got him. He scratched all the time and chewed at his skin. We blamed it on his previous conditions, but after a while it became obvious that something else was going on. My DH has a rotty with the same issues, and she suggested I try Wellness brand pet food. It doesn't have grain in it, and is a different formulation. The stuff worked for Lucky and it also helped our elderly sh pointer with his arthritis. It is expensive, but it is cheaper than meds to treat the skin condition, and the dog is much happier. It is available at Petco and Petsmart among other places. Your results may vary.

I think what my daughter told me was either wheat or corn in a dog food could cause allergies. If I had little dogs I would feed more expensive feed but since we are talking 3 monster dogs I just can't do it. I often cook them rice, veggies and some kind of meat for a meal just to give them something more wholesome than just dog food. They love it.
My darned eggs didn't come. They should have been here yesterday. I could drive to get them in 4 hours or so so there's no excuse for them taking over 3 or more days to get here. If they don't come tomorrow it will probably be a total wash.
I don't have tracking numbers so I have no idea where they are.
I am feeling totally wiped out and worthless today. I really should go get something done.

Danz, I'm sorry your eggs didn't get there, you wonder sometimes what the postal service does with things. They sure were hard on the Welsummer eggs I just got. I mean to smash them the way they were you have to wonder if they just threw them across the room, geez, the box was marked fragile all over it. I'm glad you found out what you're dealing with on the allergies with Marshmallow. As you know I was having a really hard time with finding food for my two GP pups that didn't give them the runs. I finally have them on some food I found at Sam's Club, it's called Exceed & they're doing well on it, no more runny stools & they don't poop as much. I mix rice in with their food to give them some extra at night & they love it & any other leftovers I have around at the time. Sometimes they get egg with it or leftover meat or pasta. Anyway, you might check out that food at Sam's next time you get a chance if you ever go there. We go about every other week at least to stock up on things. I know I wouldn't be able to afford the expensive dog food either for my two GPs like I buy for my tiny little dogs. They only eat a cup a day between the two of them along with some canned food on top of it. But they only weigh 5 & 6 pounds each. The food comes in a 44# bag for I think it's like $32, in that range anyway. I'm pretty picky about the food I feed my animals, so it was better than most of the other brands I looked at for the price I could afford.

I got up late today so that's why I wasn't on here earlier today. My DH has been coughing a lot at night & keeping me awake. Typical man, he thinks if he's up everybody should be. The cough medicine he's been taking wears off about 6:30 in the morning & then he gets up & takes more & wakes up the little dogs so they start howling, it's quite disturbing to try to get back to sleep after all of the coughing & howling. Then I oversleep to compensate for interrupted sleep.

I went out to let the older chickens out & looked in on the younger ones & discovered that they had been picking on one of the brown leghorn pullets to the point of bleeding on her tail end, so I had to catch her with a net & put her in one of my rabbit cages for now until I can get her healed up. I sprayed some of that blue cote stuff on there. Is there anything else I need to do for it or will that & just letting it dry up & heal be enough? It was really nasty looking, they were still picking it when I went out there & was watching them. I hope they don't start doing that now to each other. I also have one other pullet that has crooked toes on one foot. I don't know if it got hurt & now they have curled or what. Is there anything I can do for them? I saw on another thread where someone made a makeshift orthopedic shoe, but I couldn't tell what it was made ot. Does anyone have any ideas? She's one of my Ancona pullets.

I'm on day 3 of trying to break my Black Copper Marans hen of being broody. I was told to put her in a wire cage outside so the wind could blow under her & that would eventually break her. I take her in to roost at night, but make her stay out there during the day. So far it has not worked, as soon as she gets back in the coop she runs right back to the nest & gets back in there. The other Marans hen isn't laying either I don't know if it's out of sympathy or what, but she's not sitting. I seem to have some hens on strike right now. They had been laying really well & now there are only a select few that are I think, it's aggravating.

I put my 2nd batch of peacock eggs in the Brinsea today & am turning them manually. We'll see if that makes a bit of difference when the time comes for them to hatch. I may get tired of turning them & just give up & put the turner on too, we'll see. Danz, let me know how your peacock eggs come out.

Did you ever have one of those days you should have just stayed in bed? I just spent $400 for a new motor for my ztr mower. I started mowing the yard and had one of the big tires go flat. I looks like the side of it split. DH just bought a tire for one of the pull behind swisher mowers yesterday. This is a bigger tire so it won't be cheap and I still can't mow. I am sure I'll get blamed for it some way. If I ran over something it was cause the grass was so tall but I don't think that is what caused it. I think it just wore out. Crap!
I have tried many foods for my dogs from the most expensive to cheap. I don't think it is a food allergy to be honest. The other dogs do just fine. Marshmallow has always been a very picky eater and eats 1/3 of what the other two do. When I find something with high protein and decent ratio of fat, high calcium and all the other major vitamins I try it. There are only about 2 kinds she eats well without tiring of it after a few days. I honestly think her allergies are to grass or something similar that grows around here. I also have 2 cats that have allergies and have to have meds for them. One of them is definitely grass. She does great all winter and does great unless I let her outside from spring through fall. One trip outside and she starts chewing her furr out. She is 13 years old and has had this as long as I can remember.
I just wanted to sleep this afternoon and maybe I should have. I got nothing done but mess things up.
Marshmallow just came in to see me. You can tell she is feeling lousy. I just gave her some ibuprofen. Hope that helps.
Trish when I have broodies I just keep taking their eggs. Most of them stop after a while. Then there's those that just refuse to do anything but stay broody. That is when you just put them to work. Put some eggs you want hatched under her and let her do it. Then take the chicks when they are hatched. She should break the cycle then. You don't have to hatch expensive eggs. If you can find some you can sell the chicks later locally just hatch them.
Part of the reason your other hen isn't laying could be the heat. Mine went on strike last summer and I didn't have many eggs at all. We're talking scraping to get 7 dozen a week as opposed to 30 dozen or so average. I also lost some hens that stayed in the nest box to lay and got over heated last year. Sometimes the girls just need to rest for awhile.
Trish be sure to let me know how those peacock eggs hatch. Of course if you got them from different people that could make a difference as well. I'll be happy if I can hatch and raise 50%. I just don't count too much on shipped eggs.

Ibuprofen and acetominophen are toxic to dogs. If you only gave 1 or 2 you may be ok, but just to be sure, how many mg did you give her? I can look it up if you give me that and her weight.
