Consolidated Kansas

Yeah! It rained last night!

So dry here.

Sorry I can hardly remember what all I read now.

Tinychicks- WELCOME!!!

Hawkeye- I remember you asking about my lease mare. I actually leased her from a lady for a year with the option to buy at the end of the lease but the horse and I are not a good fit. She needs more saddle time than I can put in so now she is looking to re lease her out again. A lot of people on the east coast will do a 3 month lease on a horse they are looking to sell to give you some time to decide if the horse is a good fit for you or not. I need to learn how to do the multi quote thing like you do!!

Danz- Sorry about your daughters orps.

Such a bummer. Hope you get some rest today, nice and cool, good day for an afternoon nap!

HEchicken- Sorry about your moving mess but is sounds like a beautiful place! We had contractors working on this house for four and a half months when they told us it would take 6 weeks!!! ALL I did was yell at contractors and have melt downs, it was awful!! We had part of the roof off in December with snow in the forecast, I could have wrung someones neck that weekend. Glad you are getting settled in. We love our porch, best seat in the house.

Ohhh, sorry if I missed anyone, can't hardly remember what everyone wrote! One of my turkeys gobbled for the first time this morning. It was so cute!!

Thanks for the invite to the facebook group, I just asked for membership! What a warm welcome! I am excited to be here.:)
chicken danz. you are right under two hours away on 35, that's not too bad.You do have faverolles? :) I'd be open to any age but the babies I have not are still on chick starter, they are outside and around 6 weeks old.

Speaking of outside, the chickens are my first outdoor animal, and when it looked like rain last night I was scared for them! Thankfully, all we got were scary clouds. What do you all do for your chickens in severe weather? Do they just know what to do?

If I may, I just love those greenhouses made from old salvage materials. My husband is really into that, in face he built the chickie's first coop from salvage stuff. Anyone have a cheap source for the chicken wire, however? eeesh...:/ So pricey!

Tinychicks, Welcome! We're a chatty bunch, chime in any time. I just got some Salmon Faverollle chicks for the first time this spring, so I don't have any for sale. I plan to raise them later though.

Hawkeye, Ooh, I'm sorry to hear about Boeing, gosh they need to let people know so they can make plans, but that sounds like the aircraft plants. I hope you DH finds a different job so you can stay, I wouldn't want to leave if I were you either. Is he already looking now for a job, it might be best to do that before there is a big rush on people looking. That is always how it is when there is a big layoff.

Josie, aren't you lucky you got rain, we sure could use some here, it's dry as a bone again. It just goes right around us.

Danz, I'm so sorry about your daughter's lav Orps. I would be upset if I lost mine, they're so adorable!

It's so hot here already today, I had thought it was supposed to be cooler, but I guess that got pushed back another day, ugh. I hate it when it gets to 90, that's just too hot for me, especially when it's humid on top of that. I had thought last night we might get some rain, it was cloudy all day, but it just went north of us & we didn't get one drop. I'm going to have to go out & water some plants today. I need to go out & get one of my bucket nests put back up in the coop because it got knocked down, but it's too darned hot in there to stay in there long enough to do it. Right now it's sitting on it's side on the floor.

Tinychicks, Let me do some checking when I get my lazy butt out to feed and water. I'm just not moving today. I'm acting my age!

I know I have some small chicks. I have some hens but not sure how many. I actually have several but had some that are perfect but don't have muffs so they aren't breeding quality. Lovely young hens that lay well but not those you'd want to produce chicks from. I need to downsize so I might actually let a good hen go. My newer roo seems to be producing almost all male chicks. He will be replaced as soon as I can get another one grown up enough.
Chickens do pretty well at taking care of themselves as long as they have a shelter to get into.
But don't be surprised if they just stand in the rain. Sometimes I think they really enjoy it.

Hi everyone, I posted last week about my Orphington pullet with a sore leg. I got lots of good suggestions from everyone that I was trying to follow, however she was not getting any better. I took her to the vet on Saturday (got lots of funny looks there from the other clients) and wanted to let you all know what I found out. Dr. felt that it was a neurological problem that had probably been going on for a while because she was so thin. He said that there was nothing wrong with her foot, but her walking was being affected by the sciatic nerve. He gave her a shot and sent us home with a strong Vitamin B solution. She gets the Vitamin B twice a day. He said that they have had some success with these type of cases with the Vitamin B. He was not very optomistic but thought it was worth a try. If she doesn't improve enough to get around with the rest of the group in a couple of weeks, I expect we will have to cull her. It really wouldn't be fair to her to let her live this way. To make matters worse, out of the 8 Orphington's I only had three hens. A second hen (of the three) died that same morning. She was exhibiting cold symptoms the night before, I gave her some VetRx and she was acting much better by Saturday morning so I gave her another dose before I left for town. She died while I was gone. Could the medicine have gone down the wrong way or did I give her another dose too soon? Now I have one hen left, please keep your fingers crossed that nothing happens to her.

Chicken Danz, do you want to perhaps swap a pullet for my accidental cockerel? Or wait, are you raising up some cockerals yourself? Either way you are more than welcome to him. He looks like he may be all the right colors, etc.

Chickenmama1662 I am sorry you are having such horrible problems! After using the VetRX products on other animals, I'm convinced that they help to ease troubled breathing but don't cure anything much, especially if it's bacterial. I don't think you can overdose on that stuff, it's basically like Vicks for critters. Have you looked into some antibiotics?

Trish44, thank you for the welcome!

Tinychicks, thanks for the reassurance, I was afraid I had overdosed her. Are you asking about antibiotics for the other pullet (with the sciatic nerve); if so, the vet gave her a shot of antibiotics on Saturday. Only sent us home with the Vitamin B.

Vet RX works great if there is a virus like a cold. Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. Chances are it was just one of those quick things that you couldn't do anything about. If she happened to get into mold some where that could have caused that. Chickens aren't all that tough.
Chickmama sorry to here about your little girl. Maybe she'll pull out of it. At least you have a vet that took the time to see her. It's hard to find one who cares. I have a friend who's daughter is in vet school at K-state. I know she is totally into equine, but I told her she needs to get avian certified as well. There are more and more people raising chickens and some are paying very high prices for them. A vet who sees birds and has the knowledge to do it would have a lot of extra patients.I think she thought I was nuts but maybe I planted a seed.
Tinychicks sending you a PM.

If there is anyone out there that needs a Great Pyrenees for a livestock guardian dog there was a 4 month old puppy just listed on the KS Farm Animal Swap for $50. https://www.facebook.com/groups/312601348787264/. If I didn't already have two I would get her, they say she is very sweet. They were supposed to be moving to a farm & now that isn't going to happen so they need to re-home her.

Danz, I was glad that I took her to the vet. It was hard seeing her struggle and thinking there was something else I could be doing. He took a very good look at her and really seemed to care. When this vet was younger he took care of the animals at the KC Zoo so he is very used to seeing all kinds of animals. Even though he didn't have a cut and dry, take this and she will be better solution, I feel better for having him check her out. Thanks.
