I love the horse riding stories! I had a pony when I was a kid that I just loved. It was a Shetland but it was a temperamental thing, just not with me. It's name was Trinket. Trinket loved me, probably because I took really good care of him and supplied him with plenty of treats, but I'd also had riding lessons so I was pretty confident. My older brother and I did NOT get along well, read, fought constantly. Part of my love for this pony was his dislike of my brother and a cousin who was best friends with him. I was a really rotten kid who was secretly thrilled when the equally rotten pony bit my brother and bucked my cousin off. I thought it was the best pony ever! Now, my brother is such a great guy I wish Trinket and I had been nicer.

As a young adult I went riding with a couple of my cousins. Todd is a couple years younger than me but his family owned horses most of his life and they rode in parades and did lots of trail rides, etc. Todd is a very mischievous individual who decided it would be amusing to take his city cousins on a little ride. Lynette is only 6 months older than me and was less experienced with horses but seems to breeze through anything that comes her way, unlike me, who manages to be a one woman walking disaster most of the time. We took off at a very casual pace but as soon as we hit the woods Todd decided it was time for a full out canter and away we went through the trees and brush at a breakneck pace. He took us up and down creek banks and down trails with steep drop offs that he was completely familiar with at a dead run. He only checked occasionally to see if we were still with him! He is so rotten! The grand finale was riding up and over an elevated railroad track that was very steeply banked and heavily covered with gravel to keep the erosion down. Going up was terrifying with the horses slipping on the gravel but down was even worse! We slid all the way down and it felt as though we were completely out of control. No way was I going to come off that horse for Todd's amusement and I managed to stay on and not die of fright the whole way out and back. When we returned to the house his equally rotten dad was waiting, took one look at us and said "Karen, what happened to you"? As if he didn't know. Ha! I had leaves and twigs in my hair, my jeans were ripped on one thigh and my leg was bleeding and I had fresh scratches on my arms. I looked at Lynette and she looked calm and completely collected. How on earth did she manage that? Anyway, I said "Oh we've just been for a leisurely ride with Todd" he laughed and said "I can see that, did you stay on"? I replied "Absolutely"! No matter what Todd tried, I wasn't about to come off" He said "Good job". In spite of all the terror, I enjoyed that crazy ride immensely.

As a teen, Trinket had been long sold but my grandfather kept a horse at his country place for us to ride when we visited so I wasn't completely deprived as a city kid!

Last night we moved the chicken's pen to fresh grass and DH actually helped us. That turned out to be a double blessing because he noted some of the things we were struggling with and went to work figuring out how to make things easier. Yay! Easier is always good. Yesterday we got a small darker brown egg and a large light brown egg! What fun it is to find them in the nest box (or wherever, as the case may be). I let the grass grow in spots where I planned to move the birds and they are enjoying hunkering down in the taller grass this morning. I enjoy watching them so much. My big spotty rooster has been a little slower to mature but I notice he is really "noticing" the ladies these days. Big Red SX rooster is not pleased and is doing his best to keep Big Spotty from getting any action. It's quite the drama out there. I have an EE roo that has matured but he is so low on the totem pole he only attempts to shower his attentions on the bantams! WHAT? He's is a really big guy! The bantams just take off -- they can get out of the fence and he can't so he's not too much of a problem for them. I enjoyed the cloud cover this morning but would prefer the wind would die down a bit. My poor birdies look so funny with the wind at their backsides!

Josie, I'm just so sorry about your chick.

Trish, that's a really nice spot for your pen. I had no idea there was a clearing anywhere, your place is so well covered with trees! You have such a beautiful spot there. Hope you're back on your feet soon.

Hawkeye, doesn't it feel great after swimming with the kids when they are as worn out as you? It's worth the exhaustion to keep all the bickering to a dull roar!

Danz, isn't that just the way it goes when an already difficult project goes off the rails like yours did with the poor ducks? Sheesh. There's just no end to the variations of chaos Murphy's Law produces, it seems.

Ha ha! My DH often teases me about my "natural grace" or lack thereof.

On the one reign stops on horseback... Those aren't a surefire way to get a horse to stop, though they usually do work. One of my friends owned a pony at one time who enjoyed running away with people. He didn't care if you pulled on his mouth or if you pulled his head around to your toe, he kept running! My friend discovered that the only way to get him to stop was to throw herself off and use HERSELF as an anchor! Eventually, the pony got so that, when he started to think about running off, all she had to do was shift her weight and he'd change his mind. When she was still using herself as an anchor, she was riding this pony at a local horse show. The pony decided to pull his runaway trick in the middle of one of the classes, and she had to bail off. I can only imagine what was going through that judge's head!

Gee I lack horse stories. I used to ride some friends' horses now and then but I normally rode the one horse that just followed the rest. That was until one day a little heel biter dog came running out biting at the horses legs. She started bucking and then tripped in a pot hole and fell down with me on her. I'm thinking that might have been the last time I rode. I never even rode my daughter's horses when she had them. During another earlier period though I was riding a very spunky stallion shetland. He was pretty hard to ride because he was more interested in any mares than he was at behaving. One time he got fed up with being ridden and took off under some trees and piles of old junk. He was bucking and jumping and you name it. I got hit in the face by branches and stuff. Finally he ran under one of those trellises that would be like an entry to a garden. But this one was heavy and metal and there was no give. It was just tall enough for him to get through and wacked me mid torso throwing me into a pile of metal. At some point I decided it was much more fun to spend my entire summer in the swimming pool instead of on (or falling off of ) a hot ol'e horse.
Well all of the ducks survived my torture yesterday except one who must have injured his eyes and is blind. I doubt he will live. But three of the little dummies got out of their pen during the night and went into the bigger ducks pen and drowned themselves in the water pan. So I had to cut some boards this morning to block the area between the pens.
It sure is cloudy. It would be really wonderful if it would rain about 3 inches today!

Oh gosh Danz, you're having quite a time with the ducks, I hope they start behaving themselves.

My other eye is draining today, so now I have it in both, yuk. My DH left to go in early to work today since he got called in & he is just fit to be tied with my being sick. He doesn't do well when I'm sick very long. You would think that it would show him how much he relies on me & appreciate me more, but I don't see it. My son called me today & I found out he is coming some time next week. I told him I need some notice this time. My house is a disaster since I have been sick & my DH never does anything other than what he has to even when I'm sick. I don't know if he will be bringing his girlfriend, but I don't really even want him to see the house in the state it is presently in. I've been trying to get the livingroom painted, but then I got sick & the TV is still sitting in the middle of the room. I've got to get well quick, I have way too much to do around here.

That darned little chick that escaped in the garage won't let me get near it to catch it & it's too smart even to get it with my long-handled net. I don't know how I'm going to catch the darned thing. I know it has to be getting pretty darned hungry. I did put water out for it, but I'm thinking maybe being a little hungry might be a help in catching it.

My 2nd batch of Swedish Flower Hen eggs arrived today in the mail & they all were packed well & unbroken, plus there were two extras so that's a good start. I'll let them sit until tomorrow & then candle them before I put them in the bator to see if there are any ruptured air sacs. I'm supposed to get another small batch of Cream Legbar eggs next week as a gesture from the guy for all the trouble I've had. I sure appreciate it because I'm about to see $70 going down a deep dark hole I think & he is feeling sorry for me. Keep your fingers crossed for me that this batch arrives in better shape than the last two have. Maybe the third time will be a charm with those, I hope, I hope, I hope.

I just got another batch of lemon cuckoo Orp eggs minutes ago. They were packed much better so hopefully this time I'll see better results. She included several extras. Maybe between the old ones and these I'll get enough to breed in the future. No pips in my lavender or lemon eggs I put in the bator yet.
Gotta run. We are headed for Topeka.

Wow! Lots of horse stories :) I grew up around horses, lived next to a quarter horse breeder, but most of my experience was cleaning stalls as a teenage job :) I wish I could have ridden, but I have had screwy knees all my life and wasn't able to ride without pain.

Reading and commenting from my phone makes me rely on my memory. Depending on the craziness of the morning at school, I struggle with that more than usual, but must be getting old, since I can't seem to remember much I read and wanted to comment on when I can't quote on my phone to use it to jog my memory - even on a good day:-(

I hope your antibiotics kick in soon Trish! My youngest gets drainage from her eyes with any sinus issues and it is no fun!!

Danz, Lemon? Cool!! Are they really bright yellow? I might need to add one of that color to our crazy rainbow group here someday. Def not now though. I am at my limit of mouths to feed and care for here. Please post pics when they hatch:) All this hatching chicks makes me miss the peeps from the brooder. All of our are outside now, including my tiny white silkie, who is doing great. My group has a pecking order, but so far.... Knock on wood... They have been very accepting of each other- different breeds and sizes. My oldest silkie rules the roost!

I was enjoying following the chat here, but life has gotten REALLY BUSY and has made for basically no computer time! (And this is ONLY the Beginning of Summer!!!

) But I have a question for you seasoned chicken lovers...

I have 3 roos and they are not all together happy together. (no hens) The one has always pecked on the other and so finally I put an apron on the pecked one. But now that Apron dude is being SOOO mean to us when we go out there to do anything with them!!! What shall I do?? I want to get chicks this fall and then look forward to eggs! But I've thought about just 'giving these away' OR taking 1 or 2 to farmer's market, but now with KS new farmer's market regulations, I think I'd still need to give them away there too. (you gotta have Sales Tax # and other things you gotta 'sign on the dotted line' for....) If there's a way to tame Apron dude, I'm open to that too. I have a hard time cleaning in the pen with him in there, He has NO mercy on anybody! These are silkies and they are lil over a 1 yr old now. Thanks in advance for your ideas and suggestions!

Okay, so here is my first little group of eggs that we scrambled and tasted. It wasn't for a meal or anything, just to try them. All of us decided they were delicious! The largest brown egg and largest blue/green egg both had cute little double yolks. Yes, it's on a trusty Corelle plate, however, my children find many creative ways to break them anyway.

Here are some of the kids with their radish bouquets. We raised tons of radishes!

I suffered from lack of motivation today and got little to nothing done. Oh well, I forgive me!

Hello everyone! I'm not going to even try to catch up since I've been MIA for the past few weeks. I had a really huge project in school that took up about a week and a half of my time, but then all last week I was in the hospital with pancreatitis and just went back to work today. I'm feeling much better but it's crazy how tiring being in the hospital for 6 days can make you! I hate spending my time off of work at work.. LOL (For those that don't know - I work in the ER at the hospital).

Updates on my birdies. I moved the silkies outside into a kennel the night before I was admitted and they are doing great! They are finally growing and look like chickens again! LOL. Our plan is to stick them in the big birds coop overnight this coming friday and hope that they are accepted into the full flock. The big girls have had access to talk to them and visit through the kennel, so i'm hoping that two weeks of that is enough and they will be friendly. All the birds are doing great. The big girls are sounding more and more like real chickens every day and I can't wait for them to start laying! Only about a month more and it'll be time!

Btw - who told the rain it could stay away? I'm tired of watering the garden every night. I'm getting tomatoes out the wazzoo though - time to make some salsa! (As soon as I can start eating real food! LOL)
