Consolidated Kansas

Know anyone local (Southern KS area) that would have pups for sale? Or even within a hundred miles driving?

As crazy as this sounds, I am petrified of dogs. But, it is more other peoples' dogs - I would need to get such a big dog as a puppy or I'd be afraid of him..
Thanks.

More dog questions - I've been doing my web browsing and looking/reading/etc. Here are some more questions:

1) What about something mixed/purebreed Australian Shepard?
2) What about something mixed/purebreed Border Collie?
3) I do not plan on providing any type of fencing - with that said, should I even get a dog? (I have 27 acres with few neighbors on a dirt road out of town)

Side Notes - My to do list today...... scrape propane tank, paint propane tank, finish chick coop's fencing under bottom, caulk/paint chick coop, start fence run, grocery shop, laundry.. what does your To Do list look like today???

We are home and my chicken sitter kept my birds all alive :). Our silkie stopped laying while we were gone though :-( I guess it was the heat? It wouldn't be a big stressor to simply have someone different taking care of them would it?

I tried to read from the train ( took a family train ride to Chicago for a Shriner's appt for my daughter), but darn if my eyes could adjust to the bouncing :-( so much to do now that we are home, I am not sure I will ever get caught up. My daughter is needing 4 surgeries this fall, so it sounds like we will be pros at getting things ready to leave and unpacking again. Right now, I am exhausted from it all though.

I did see there was another fox attack, however:-(. I have seen them in my neighborhood many evenings this year, more so than previously. Might just be coincidence, but are there more of them this year? We have silver foxes around my neighborhood. There is a creek nearby and some park type land in between housing developments, but I never thought fox were city animals.... I have my chickens right outside my bedroom window, so I would think I would hear anything, or I would hope so anyhow. I have wire mesh under all my fences and gates to keep my dogs safe from the foxes since a visiting fox shared a very lethal parasite with one of them a few years back. I am hoping that will be enough to deter them.

I am going to have to go check out a county fair this summer, just to see all the different types of birds I read about here. It sounds like it must be a lot of fun! Might be something my kids would be interested in doing next year.

I will be keeping my fingers crossed for all the peafowl I have seen here to make it and do well! I have never seen a white peacock. That is definitely intriguing!!!

Better stop procrastinating and get to attacking the laundry pile now before it breeds and multiplies again :)

Stay cool and safe :)

Welcome GardenMacgyver!
Sunflowerparrot, I am sure there are breeders close to you. Unfortunately I just don't know who they are. I just looked and found this page. http://www.facebook.com/groups/renocountykansasswap/
You can ask to join and then post that you are looking for a pup. I'll bet you get a response. Also check Craigslist on a regular basis. I would look under Farm and Garden rather than pets. They often will be listed as LGD rather than pups to keep people who don't know that they are working dogs, not pets from flagging the adds.
Karen, I'm thinking that might have been a young coyote rather than a fox. This time of year the young coyotes are just learning to fend for themselves and they have no common sense about what to be afraid of. Once they learn it isn't safe they'll usually steer clear. I had one walk right into the yard a couple years ago and try to grab a chicken. I ran around the house to see it drop it. Unfortunately Marshmallow was asleep and didn't hear it either until I did. It was right in the middle of the day. Once it figured out I had a dog it never returned. But unfortunately they need to be scared off before they figure it out. I'm just guessing of course but it seems like could be the case.
Any chance those weeds that blow in shorted out the fence?

Don't remember who now....Trish44, maybe? We went with kennel panels, but now would be about the same. We're not done yet, but have some of the roofing done. I explained what I wanted at the hardware store and it's going up really easy. One person can easily assemble the roof. No single part is very heavy or difficult. There is already a notable temp difference inside each run. When it's done, I bought a mister system to use as well.

I don't know how well you can see it, but the wooden framework is attached with these metal clamps/bands that go over the panel frame and screws into the wood. The roof panels are metal 3' x 10' panels. You can assemble on the ground and have someone help you slide/guide it into place, or assemble the framework right onto the kennel tops and then attach the panels. It would be a pain to do on a windy day, but easy on a non windy day. We used the same clamps to attach the kennel panels to the building. Phase 2 will be rehabbing the building into a multiple coop/poultry barn.
beautiful silkies! Love the hard top on the kennel! Where did you find $20 panels?? Lowes carries metal roofing and it's $40 a sheet.

Really need to get the privacy fence up. I think we're starting to freak out the neighbors.

LOL!!

Hawkeye-
OH! Light Bulb! I just understood the extended black as the base color, now that I've read it 10 times

. I just need to keep re-reading it all and it will eventually ALL make sense! I think I understand the ground color, too. I would guess it's gold, since the copper color is present, but that's just me guessing, I could be totally off in left field. I will ask her to make sure, though.
By George, I think I'm getting it now!...until another factor gets thrown in, lol!
Extended Black is your Groundcolor-- that basically means your pattern. It helps determine the pattern your bird will be. The Gold and Silver is your base color-- that is the base color that your pattern will be based on! :) You almost had it!! You're getting it!! (and even if you have a Gold base color, it doesn't mean it will show up. You have dilutors and inhibitors at work as well... but we won't get into that.

Long day! It started by going to bed at 0530 this morning after brewing 24 gallons of beer. Then, I slept in and went to dinner with family and friends for my birthday. I ended the evening by seeing DD in the King and I. I call that a good day!
YAY on all the brewing!! We have friends who brew all the time too! Beer is more complicated than ale, so you're really going all out, aren't you! and.... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! Sounds like a really fun day!

No idea on the dog! We're headed to church and then taking the kids roller skating later on today. :) We also usually eat out on Sunday's too after church.

Quick answer to this. I've got to get going. Austrailian shepards and border collies are herding dogs not protection dogs. They might not do you a lot of good and might even add to your problem. Of the two, the AS are known for being extremely smart and might be able to be trained to not bother your birds but it could be a crap shoot. You need the genetics of a dog that is bred for protection without being humanly aggressive. Avoid any and all hunting dogs. If it were me I would stick to the G:p, Akbash or Antolian mixes or breeds.

Sunflowerparrot, I agree with danz. herding dogs are just that. They push animals in the direction they are told too if working. If they are just pet dogs they will push animals anyway. Then when the frightened animals try to flee, to get away, that is when they learn to chase, it becomes a game from usually being bored. Thats when the trouble starts, and injury's and death occur .If you look at trainers and even people that have that type of dog for farm use, they are usually kept in a pen when the owner is not using them to keep them out of trouble.
Good luck on your serch.

oh, you asked what others are doing today
my day consists of feeding the cows, feeding and cleaning the auto waterers for the goats. Feed my two GP'S, feed and check waters for the chickens. feed the ducks.
finish mowing the yard. Check and put wood in the outside wood stove, Do assorted laundry, iron the lab coats for showmanship tuesday.
Go to fair grounds finish a couple of loose ends, making sure correct size of cage is in place for the large fown coming in , zipping cages down, getting water and feed crocks out an put in duck pens. Drive a t-post in the ground to secure the turkey pens. unload the grill that we are raffleing off as a fund raiser.

Then if hopefully go to the rodeo and see the queen get crowned and enjoy the rodeo!!

Thanks for all the help with the pheasant, I found a home for it today. So it has went to its new home. I am very happy that I found it a home with someone who know how to take care of pheasants.
