Hello all. We will be leasing a rural 8 acre tract with included house, shed, coop. Off-topic but since so many smart people here . . . There is a 4 stall "stand" in the pasture a previous tenant used for temporary horse boarding. Pic attached. He put it on the ppty but didn't take it with him when he vacated on July 2011. Does that make it "abandoned property"? Can I "claim it for Spain" and use it as I see fit? Was thinking of adding some panels and making it a little goat shelter. Thoughts? Experience with abandoned property? The landlord says I'm free to use it as he has no claim and doesn't consider it part of the permanent structures. Thanks for your guidance.

Danz, I ate rabbit in the past, not mine but someone else's & I think it makes a big difference how it's prepared. I personally don't like gamey types of birds or wild animals because of the flavor unless it's prepared so that taste is covered up with some kind of spices or sauce. I think that's why I like duck with orange sauce. I know that some people really like rabbit & it's supposed to be a lot healthier for you.

Gosh I went out to let the chickens out & feed everyone this morning & I was carrying some damp paper towels in one hand. I let the chickens out & my gold laced wyandotte just jumped up & grabbed those paper towels out of at

that would have been a funny sight.

We got a little rain lots of wind and its nice and cool out. Looks like its time to winterize our pool kids are going to hate it.

So Lucie is coming back. Apparently the youngest son is allergic to her and got a sinus infection. I recommended giving her a bath to see if that would help calm down his allergies but I guess 4 hours later they are not miraculously cured so they give up and don't want to keep her. Never mind it could be FALL and seasonal allergies like ragweed and mold are at their highest counts right now. Or maybe giving the dog a bath and waiting a few days instead of a few hours to see if that helps. I don't even think it is the poor dogs fault. I would venture to bet it isn't even dogs but something in the air. They have had dogs in the past and play with the neighbors shedding dogs all the time. Should have gone with the goat people!!!! Geez.....
OH no!! Sounds like an excuse to me. My son is VERY allergic to horses (the last time we wound up at the ER because of it). But no way am I getting rid of them. My boy is now taking allergy shots and is on his 2nd year now. He is so severe-- he takes two shots once a week and will do this for the next 5 years. I mean, there is a way around everything. And when he goes outside, I just give him Benadryl. So giving up a dog because of so called "allergies"-- that is totally bogus if you ask me. Not to mention, irresponsible of them for taking on a dog and then giving it back.

Oh and more bad news. I finally heard from the guy with the peachicks. He is working nights and busy, but he said a skunk got in and got one of his babies. I don't know if I am ever going to get a peachick. Maybe I'll find one at Gardner.
Oh, so sad!! Oh wow, and you really wanted them. So sorry about that. :(

Well, I got my free pen put together this evening and I am so happy with it. It turns out there were brackets with it after all.
YAY!!! Glad it worked out better than you thought!

I was sitting outside guarding the cats while they ate & the coyotes started in howling before it was even dark tonight & they were close. The dogs started barking right after the first few yips & howls & I didn't hear them any more after both dogs got in the act, good doggies!
My DH was out a couple nights ago watching football at his friends home and got home around 11am-- he said that as soon as he crawled into bed, that a coyote started howling and it sounded like it was right outside our window. He figured it was after the chickens (they were safely locked up) and he ran out there with the gun--- but he must have made enough noise, because he said he never did see it or hear it after he got out there! LOL What a crazy night for him! And I slept thru the WHOLE thing! NO idea that my DH is out there running around after coyotes after he already has gotten home super later. Just made me laugh when he was telling me the story!

Anyway, the LAST time he did that-- went running after coyotes in the middle of the night, he actually was able to get pretty close. He thought he might have hit them, but they still got away. (this was a few winters ago) Since then, they have been VERY sneaky and quiet about coming up to our house. So this must be a new coyote or a young one.

We had the kids stay home from school this morning and headed up to the Kansas State Fair for FREE morning!! If you get there before 10am the first Friday, you walk in free. We spent the entire day there. We got home about 7pm. It was a fantastic day!! It did rain a bit, but it was no biggie, there are lots of vendors and barns and such to do indoors. Then it really cooled it down. In fact, I got really cold and in the 4-H building, I bought a cute 4-H t-shirt and put it on over my shirt to help warm me up. The kids never stopped running long enough to notice it was cold. Anyway, my feet hurt, but it was such a happy fun day for us. Good times!! :) Basically, I guess we got another 3 day weekend in!

Marc, I'd say it's YOURS! :) It looks great! I would be using it too!! Heck yeah!

Heather-- so cute that your boy is trying to gobble! Awwww.. We used to have a Tom when I was a kid, and he would strut for us and hiss, but he was so sweet-- you could pet him and talk to him when he was doing it. He just loved the attention. I like really tame birds, so I'd probably pet him and tell him he's a good boy! :)

Danz-- oh uh, those hot eggs don't sound great. I sure hope you have good results with them! I guess you can candle them in a few days and see. Crossing my fingers for you! That neat that you got more birds sold and he paid you more. Very nice of him. :)

Trish, funny about the towels! Never know-- they may try to eat it anyway. hehe!

Rob-- hey we spent the entire day at the State Fair today!! It was so fun! BTW-- go check out the poultry barn, they have a bunch of really nice Silkies in there this year! I was so happy to see that. The last two years, there were NO silkies at all. And before that, just hatchery quality birds. They did have a white hatchery quality silkie rooster in there-- not sure what they are thinking about that. Ah well. The others make up for him. They even had a few AOV's (all other colors) in there-- one was a Frost! That is a new color that lots of "silkie people" are working on! I was excited to see it! I took a picture of it and was going to post it to my silkie group! LOL!!

Back up for a minute. David do you have a rooster? If so that could very well be rooster damage. Also age might be a factor. How old are they? If over a year old they could be moulting. I've got lots of bare butts around here. If they don't have wounds they could be just fine. Also you might have mites and not know it. I looked and looked and couldn't find any on mine regardless. But a topical treatment of ivermetin and they started feathering back in. So there must have been something going on. Also the heat could affect feathering loss.
Nope. No roosters. It was literally a case of 4 on 1. All of the birds are around 22 weeks old. Thinking heat may be the culprit. It happened on the days when the temps shot back up to 100+. No more feather picking since the temps went back down. Haven't been able to catch my SLW to check her the past couple days. Last time I checked her she look fine. Just bare skin & no wounds. Going to TSC tomorrow to pick up a topical & treat her just in case.

Are they younger than the other birds? Sometimes the younger or lowest on the pecking order get picked on. Make sure you separate the injured so they don't get picked worse. Blu kote is good to use to cover up any red raw flesh (chickens can't help but pick at a bloody wound)
My SLW is pretty much right in the middle of the pecking order. She was being picked on by birds on either side of her in the order. The feather picking has stopped so hopefully it was just a temporary phase.

Thanks for the advice. Hope to see some of you at the State Fair in the coming weeks! If you're showing at the fair GOOD LUCK!

We went to the fair yesterday. Truly the land of the "deep fried easy" as they say in the advertisement for hamburger helper on TV. I've never seen such odd things deep fried in my life. My DH was working a booth for the state surveyors' association, so I had the day to wander.

I went to see the chickens first (of course). The BO hens and pullets they were showing were double the size of my BO hen. They were HUGE. I didn't see a single Campine in the place, but there were lots of RIRs and BOs and Speckled Sussexes. Lovely birds. There was a little white silkie that was adorable (I understand he was a hatchery quality from an earlier post). I see why some of you really like them. I had never seen the porcelain coloring before, either, and it is lovely.

The Domestic Arts building was something else. There were some of the most beautiful quilts I've ever seen in there. I spent a couple of hours just admiring the handwork. I wish I had some of those talents (and patience and time).

This was my first visit to the fair since either '76 or '77 when my daughter was really little, so it was an eye-opener. He is going back next Saturday to help them shut down the booth, so I may go back just to see the aftermath.

OMG! I wonder if we were in at the poultry building at the same time? We were looking at birds around 11am or around then. We hit up the horses, swine, sheep and rabbits first. There were more than just one white silkie-- there were probably about 4 of them! Then there were a lot of Blues and a few AOV's-- all of the silkies except for the one white rooster were a very good quality bird. The white rooster had a red rosecomb, which is the wrong color (should be mulberry) and the wrong type of comb-- should be a Walnut. But the other silkies I was impressed with! I wonder if they hadn't been cooped in when you were there. I noticed they were still cooping in a lot of birds when we were walking thru the barn. Those BO's you saw were definitely not hatchery quality birds! The first show I went to had the BO's that large and the larger the better. They are the size of medium dogs!! They are HUGE! There is some guy up in Jefferson County that breeds very nice ones and I bet a lot of people get their nice ones from him! :) I agree-- the textiles this year was really great! My DH and I love looking at the quilts. But unfortunately we had to move out of there before we got to look at much because the kids were wanting to run around everything. I'd say for the most part they behaved, but we did have a few moments!

Legally the landlord is supposed to give notice to the previous owners and give them 45 days to claim the property. I would wait at least 45 days since they moved out and if they haven't claimed it by then I'd say go ahead and use it. You sure don't want to put money into it and have them pick up up. You'd sure be a lot safer if he would send them notice.

Sounds like several of you had fun at the fair. I haven't been to the fair since I think 1973. Been a few years. I was all into going to the hog barn back then and never looked at chickens. Hawkeye do they have an open class for breeds that aren't standardized yet at the state fair? I'm just weighing in some of my options for next year. I'm spending all this money to get these fancy breeds so it would be nice if I could show them.
Maybe....not sure I want to dedicate that much work! Everything I am getting is coming from famous breeder lines though.
I've got some new eggs to put in the hatcher. I also got some in the mail yesterday but they were awfully hot and not packed the right way so I fear they won't develop.

Danz, there is an Open class for everyone that is not associated with 4-H, FFA, or some other organization. Within the Open class (which is usually made up of 18 yrs or older and I've seen some kids in there) are all the standard breeds you would imagine. BUT, then you can show in AOV-- (all other varieties) which is an existing breed with a new color you have as a project. As far as showing an entirely new breed of chicken... I don't know. There are the set classes that your bird should fall into. But I don't know that they wouldn't let you do it. I would call them and ask if that is something you can do.

Click here-- http://www.kansasstatefair.com/contact_description.php?id=11&pages=ci But you should be able to click on "Competitions" and get linked up to the Poultry. (the competitions link isn't working for me right now) But right now, I'd use the 1-800 number at the bottom of the website and just call them and I'm sure they will give you the number or the name of the person to ask. I would call and find out and then you'll know! That would be really interesting to see if they allow new breeds of chickens. From my VERY limited experience with showing and clerking for the judge at the last show, they are very strict with the classes and making sure each bird falls into the correct class. So my guess would be that they won't allow it, but hey, you never know. Just because my thought is that they would have no standard to judge by. But you never know!! :)

Oh and Marc-- you said the building was abandoned in 2011-- that is over a year ago now. I would think that they would have no recourse. BTW, if that building was put on rental property owned by the landlord, then when the person leaves the premises, they only have 30 days to pick up left over stuff. And I think legally, I bet they have a lot less time than that. My FIL is a landlord-- about 3 years ago, he sold off over 800 (YES, I'm not kidding!!!) properties so he could semi retire. (He still owns around 10 properties) Anyway, when someone leaves his rentals, he hauls in a dumpster and throws out anything they left-- and that includes electronics, furniture, outdoor doghouses, etc.. It's all gone. He does not wait the 30 days. His nephew is an Estate Layer (our whole family are lawyers! LOL) and he writes up iron clad contracts for his tenants. Makes it easier to evict someone. But seriously-- after a YEAR has gone by with no contact, I'd say you can safely make claim to that building. But it might be best to double check with your new landlord that you can indeed use it since it would fall into his possession by now since it is on his property and he now has the right to dispose of it.
