Consolidated Kansas

Hi all! I'm reading and learning, and learning some more. By the time I go to post I don't remember who said what anymore. Just wanted to let you know that I'm following along.

hawkeye, I love your t-shirt. What program did you use to draw your image? I've never done that like that before. I like to play with images. Your shirt is adorable and I agree, you should deck out your family. It's awesome.

I have chicks hatching, they weren't supposed to start until Friday but it never fails I have a few early ones. The earliest are dated 8/24 and none of those hatched yet but 2 dated 8/25 hatched this afternoon. One looks great, it's up and around. But the other, I've never seen this before. Anyone know what this is or what I should do??????

Thank you!! I used Corel Draw. I imported the photo I wanted to draw over the top, and then made my line drawing. Then I made another enclosed shape that went on the inside and used that to "color" the chickens. Then I picked out the font. I LOVE that crazy messy font that has all the ink stains with it. It looks very 'chickeny' to me. The downside is that Corel does not save images to .png, jpeg, etc... it only saves it as a .CDR And you can start out your drawing as small as you'd like, but then to get a higher resolution that will be acceptable for a t-shirt, you then have to group it all, and scale it out beyond the page limitations so that you get your resolution, THEN click "copy" and paste it in Paint and then you can save it as a .png Then you can upload it to the t-shirt site! Easy-peasy!! It only took me a few minutes to draw out the chickens. But to be honest, I am a Graphic Designer and I do work with these programs pretty regularly and have had worked with quite a few print companies-- mostly local when I worked in a design shop. But I really do think anyone could do this if they had the program. You just need to convert all your lines and objects and make them "curves" so you can get your points put on them and shape them how you'd like. I even convert all of my text-- if you leave it and upload as text, it will mess you up. So I flatten my text. It becomes an image -- turns it into a rastor. So far, you can't vectorize your text, but once you have it the way you want it, it doesn't matter anyway. (actually, you can vectorize your text, but that's really for something else entirely--when you are creating logos that need to have an 80% change) Anyway, I hope this company does a good job on the printing!! I did the hard part! LOL

How high is your incubator? You might have it set a little too warm??? If that is the case, you can get umbellical issues and them not absorbing the yolk if they start to hatch on the early side. I was dealing with some of that myself. I would recommend double checking your thermometer. I have put 3 thermometers in my incubator-- I know that sounds excessive, but I was having a lot of troubles with inaccurate therms. BTW-- I couldn't see your picture for some reason. But from HE's response, I know what you're dealing with.

Hey Treva, Sorry about your chick. I had a Bourbon Red Turkey poult with a seriously unabsorbed yolk that I managed to save. It was a lot of work but she's a very healthy bird now and you'd never know she had any problems.

This was how I treated mine. I kept the unabsorbed part moist by alternating enough to cover the area with Vitamin E and then Neosporin. I kept it from drying as best I could, so applied at least 3 times daily. Even though I didn't treat at night it seemed to be okay. I also gave it an electrolyte/probiotic/vitamin solution in its water to help strengthen its immune system. It kept running around eating and drinking like nothing was amiss. Finally at around 2 weeks I began to believe it was going to make it because the opening had shrunk and most of the yolk had absorbed. Finally, a bit of the old yolk fell off and the opening closed over completely. I don't know if anything like this will work with your chick or not but it worked great with my turkey. Good luck! I know it's tough to have a chick that's not well.

Thanks Hawkeye. I went and changed my pic to a link. I couldn't get it to upload it directly from my computer, that sure would have been handy though.

I followed most of what you said about the shirt and designing. My brother had a sign shop, he also did shirts and used Corel Draw. I use Inkscape, but I cut my stuff out with a Cricut and not a plotter like he did I, he also did silk screening and I'm working with stencils. I think the basics are the same though. I think I'm a bit crazy with it all, but I sit there and mess with the nodes until I drive myself bonkers. But... I get pretty shirts and it's lots of fun. I won't post a bunch of craft pics here but here is a recent project for my neices girl scout troop, I made kits for them to make this, this is a sample shirt, all designed on Inkscape then transferred to SCAL(cricut software)...

I really LOVE your font. What's it called???

I had to do this super detailed motorcycle image for an event last year, I'm glad to know I can do it but it just takes so long to get the designs perfect. But that's just the problem, they can't be perfect and I can't stop trying to make them that way.

Karen, I don't know how enough about the anatomy of a chick. Neosporin is a great idea. Is the yolk like an organ? Is keeping it moist like what they do for babies with their organs on the outside? I'm looking at this little thing on it and I don't understand why I can't tie it off. Does the chick NEED what's in the yolk sac now that it's out? It can eat and gain nourishment from it's feed now. It seems like the longer it stays there the longer it has a chance to be exposed to contaminants. If it's off then it can heal. I've rescued lots of kittens, calves, bunnies and about anything else that happens to come our way but I've never had to do anything with a chick other than help them hatch and once we had one that for some reason was cold and lethargic and I thought it would die and we sat there and held it in our hands to keep it warm and it made it too. It's all so stressful, I will do anything I can to help it.

How long should it take to absorb if it will? I think it's getting smaller already.
it could take a few days.

Hawkeye, loved your shirt -- great job. Those are the best line drawn Silkies I've ever seen.
awww, thank you! I bet it's because you've never seen anyone try to draw silkies, though! LOL

OH I love your design! Very cute! The fun messy font is called "Wonderland" and I got it free from "UrbanFonts.com" Just go there, download it and then add it to your font's folder. If you don't add it to your folder, it won't show up in your programs. You probably already know that, but just in case you DL it and then it doesn't show up-- that's why! I unzip them, first too. Don't leave them zipped, or it won't work. Of course, you probably already knew that. I figure it's best to cover bases just in case, though.

I have had this happen, and my chicks have died. I've not had one survive like Karen did. You are not supposed to cut the sac off or tie it off, etc. I don't entirely know why. But it sure will kill them if you do. (did it) Anyway, the Triple Antibiotic (regardless of brand name) MUST be applied because it will harbor bacteria and even if it falls off, then keep the site coated with the antibiotic ointment because chicks will often die around the 2 week mark from being over whelmed by bacteria. There are a lot of threads started about this very thing, and the concensus is that keep it attached, keep it coated in triple antibiotic ointment and cross your fingers! Karen really did spend a lot of time taking care of her turkey.

It shouldn't take more than 24 hours for the chick's yolk to be absorbed. The danger with chicks is they often bleed to death with an unabsorbed yolk. It looks like that one is doing fine. I personally wouldn't mess with it other than very carefully putting some ointment on it, and just let it absorb it naturally. I haven't lost any chicks to this yet. But I guess there could be a first time. That is the main thing that happens when people try to assist hatching chicks. (Not indicating that is the only cause by any means for an unabsorbed yolk.)
When a turkey doesn't absorb it's yolk like in KarenS' case it is an entirely different matter. I had one that took about 10 days to absorb but it did fine eventually. It is a lot more common in turkeys and takes a lot longer to absorb.
I freaked out the first time I saw this on a turkey. I thought it had ruptured its guts.
It doesn't look like there is that much yolk left so I'm betting if it isn't bleeding it will be fine tomorrow.
Hawkeye I am enjoying my second cup of hot cider. It isn't great like homemade, but still good. I have some packets you mix with hot water I got from Sam's club last year. Better than nothing.
I went back out in the rain and pulled a tarp over the turkey pens. It was pouring down rain and they were all just standing in it. Of course it wasn't simple like it should have been. The tree limbs kept catching it. I have netting over the pen so I had to work around that. So between hooking a rope to the tarp to wrestle it, and being wacked in the face and arms a few dozen times with tree limbs I finally got it on. I am now wearing my 3rd pair of pants today since I already had 2 pair soaked. I put on a big old yellow raincoat and tied the hood over my head. Of course then I couldn't see. My legs from the butt down were still out so they were soaked. I discovered that Cloud is scared to death of big yellow monsters with people legs. She would start to come over to me recognizing my voice, but as soon as I would move she'd back up. Stupid dog! I hope no big yellow predators come around!!
Hawkeye you got me inspired and I played around and designed a T-shirt just for fun. You'll have to let me know what kind of quality those are that you ordered. I think I was on the same site you used and chose the same style shirt. I don't like anything too fitted though in Tshirts. I like hiding my belly fat!!! It said light weight so who knows what that means?
It definitely feels like a soup night tonight. I just need to decide what kind to make.
Oh and Mommahen I looked through those photos. That was quite a process to make the shirt.

Hello all! I have arrived back on planet Earth, well actually on planet BYC. It has been an extremely crazy Spring and Summer, and hoping for a nice calm fall.

I have moved from Wichita to the small town of Potwin (between Newton and El Dorado) and am thrilled that they allow roosters in the town limits. I am right on the edge and absolutely thrilled about it.

So glad for cool weather, I lost a few birds from the summer heat, all 3 of my silkie hens, and a Violet Laced Wyandotte hen. I just could not break them of being broody. :(

I will try to keep up better.

Tonya

I'm jealous that you can have roos in town! My intolerant town outlawed them this year. Sorry about your losses; I got lucky this year and no one went broody on me.

Well....crap. I had to go into my turkey pen this afternoon and didn't notice the door swung open behind me. My male walked out the open door and is now loose in the chicken yard. He's hanging close to the turkey pen as it turns out he and the female have bonded over the last couple of weeks, and she was distraught if he wandered very far. The problem is, he's too wild for me to get close to him to pick him up but if I leave the door open and give him space to walk back in, the female eyes it like she's thinking of joining him. Hopefully later today I'll be able to get the kids to help me out with herding him back in while I stay in the pen to make sure Madge doesn't escape while the door is open.

It's amazing what a pain these fairly small critters can be, isn't it?! I hope he's back where he belongs.

We've had the same light, soaking rain all day. I don't know what it will amount to in the end, but it has to help even if it's not that much.

DH got a list of houses with property for sale in our area. Only one falls within the 5 mile radius allowed by the fire department, and it's overpriced with no basement. There really aren't all that many houses within that distance, never mind houses for sale. It's a mile just to the edge of town if you go south, even more if you're heading north. I'm feeling a little dejected because I'm now 100% convinced that we will have to stay in town for as long as DH works at the FD.
