Consolidated Kansas

Wow I cant wait to visit them next spring when I start my new bigger coop Cause you know how it goes when you catch chicken fever, also next year I will be hatching and selling and of course I will pick out chicks to keep, its addicting. I love my chickens and turkeys

OK, followed the thread, Consolidated KS, not sure if I'm doing this right - there's SO many buttons. I live about 10 miles south of kcks. If you live in this part of the country you know that nothing grew here this summer in the awful heat. Chickens are birds, birds were still here.
I guess my first questions are:: did the chickens do all right this summer in the terrific heat?
which chicken do best in this area,
where do you go to buy them?
This year was brutal and I lost some chickens. But I found that the ones I lost were the purebred breeds,smaller breeds, and darker colors. None of my mixed breed birds died. I kept water pans every where for the birds to stand in and put frozen water in pop bottles in the pans. It really makes a difference. And shade makes a huge difference as well.
Many of us hatch chickens and then there is always ordering them on line or buying from the store. A lot depends on the time of year you want them.

I have a question about my ducks/goose. Before butcher day a couple weeks ago, I noticed that a couple of my birds had what looked like a runny nose. I figured they'd just been playing in their water and decided to check them a while later. When I checked them several hours later, the same two still looked like they had a runny nose. So, I picked one of them up and held it for a while. Their beak dried off and there was no more sign of a runny nose, so I figured I was just being paranoid. I noticed the same "runny nose" again yesterday in the same ducks and now my goose, and I want your opinion - am I being paranoid?

I noticed the runny nose on my goose and two of my ducks yesterday. I held one of the ducks last night, and wiped her bill dry. She was being very uncooperative as my birds don't like being held. However, her runny nose came back while I was holding her. Is it possible that she's losing water from her nose for a while after getting a drink? I put them in the duck house last night with an ice cream bucket with ~3 inches of water in the bottom. When I let them out this morning, I checked my goose, and she didn't appear to have a runny nose. The other birds were being uncoooperative and ran for the food/water as soon as I let them out. Also, with my goose, she shakes her head alot and water (or snot???) flies. She seems to drip water from her beak (not her nose) a lot as well. I had asked about this with my goose before and was told it was related to the bird being nervous. I admit that I have been making changes to things recently (necessary changes after adding more birds to the flock). Are these "symptoms' something I need to worry about? The first time I saw a "runny nose" in any of my birds was 2 weeks ago. A couple days later, I butchered 2 drakes and a duck. The following week, I went on a business trip. When I came back, I added 5 khaki campbell ducks (females). The KCs don't eat much, compared to the other birds (they're also considerably smaller, even though they're all full grown). I noticed last night and this morning that the birds hadn't eaten all the food I'd given them. Usually, my goose will go around and clean up anything that's left. Is this a sign of sickness or am I just being paranoid and it's actually a sign that I'm feeding them more than I need to? Thoughts/opinions would be greatly appreciated!!!
Lizzy I remember you talking about the runny noses. If I were you I would get some vetRX and put it directly in their water for a couple weeks. If they have a cold it would be a virus and it has to run it's course. You could do some preventative antibiotics in their water but I don't like using antibiotics unless they develop a secondary infection.

Hi Everybody,

I live in Missouri, but in the Kansas City area - can I still join this thread?

I have had ducks for two years, and we just started with baby chickens (and two more ducks!) last month. Learning lots through this forum.

My husband and I just went to Restore KC in Overland Park this week to buy supplies for the chicken coop he is building. Bought three windows, about 8 brand new door jams, hinges and a fancy light fixture for the chicken coop he is building. Cost us $35! The place is hit or miss, but I highly recommend it.
Of course you can join this thread. Welcome to the group. I love to see people re-purposing things. Almost everyone of my coops are made from recycled things.
I am so excited to see so many people near me

Hi KS/MO people
frow.gif

does anyone do any egg/chick swapping?
Yes several of us do. Welcome! What do you have and what are you looking for?
Oh I love all chickens and turkeys and of course when you get chicken fever there is no permanent cure

..... I love to know what people have, what is available in my area to choose from.
You are so right! I am the queen of not knowing when to stop!! I guess I fall into the category of bird hoarder. I love them all.

I have have pairs of the following: Pekins, Cayugas, Swedish Blues for my ducks, and Polish Crested, RI Reds, Black Sex Link and Ameracaunas ( at least that is what I was told when I bought them ) for my chickens. The chickens and the Swedish Blue ducks are all five weeks old, and still living in my garage. Hoping most of them are females. I heard one of them try to crow yesterday.

We are looking for Silkies. We tried incubating some eggs over the summer. I had the eggs shipped from Washington State, but I think it was too hot during shipping and then my inexperience, none of them made it until the end.

I looked the VetRX up, and it doesn't look like it's an antibiotic. It looks like it's a home remedy whose base is corn syrup... I also called around to the local farm supply store and the vet, and they don't have any in stock. It is EXPENSIVE stuff online.

The vet's assistant said that she would keep an eye on them but wouldn't worry until/unless they started showing other symptoms. She specifically said to look for coughing, diarrhea, etc. She said that they have antibiotics they can give me for the ducks. What do you guys think? I haven't noticed any coughing or diarrhea. When I went back out a couple hours after feeding them this morning, all their food was gone. Input please!!!

I'm glad you all could join us here, we always welcome new people, so join in any time. I agree with HEChicken as to where you can get chickens, but might add there is also a buy, sell, trade part of Backyard Chickens where you can pick up birds also. I found some turkeys on there earlier this year that I had shipped to me. We also have a Kansas Poultry Swap site & Kansas Farm Animal Swap site on Facebook if you're on there. Here are the links for those: https://www.facebook.com/groups/275183675880038/ & https://www.facebook.com/groups/312601348787264/. We have lots of birds & animals come through those sites, so if you watch you can often find someone closer to you to buy from. I happen to be in the far south central part of the state, but there are people all over Kansas on this thread. I also do travel to Missouri off & on to visit my DH's family, so if I was coming your way I possibly could transport something small. I will be hatching a variety of chicks in the spring, some are rare breeds & I do raise true Ameraucanas in black, lavender, wheaten & blue wheaten. I will start hatching in early spring through probably the end of May. There are others in the group closer to KC that also hatch chicks.

Well I'm really disgusted now, my lady that put me off yesterday didn't show up today either, I'm so done with her. I wish people would just do what they say they're going to. Danz, I know you can relate. If people say they're going to be somewhere then darnit they need to be there unless someone died, that's how I feel about it, but that's me. So now I have to hope that the guy who emailed me will come through instead. He just sent me a couple of texts, so hopefully he will come.

Well it rained most of the night here I think, just a steady rain. I don't know how much we got but it's pretty muddy out there now. My turkeys are standing in gooey mud in their pen now. I hate to use up all of my straw trying to dry it out because I know I will need it later on, so I guess I will just wait & let it dry.

Welcome! Most of us are breeding specific breeds of chickens (or ducks) and if you let the group know what you are looking for, we can help you hunt down the breed you are wanting. :)

I have silkies. But right now, I am breeding/showing them, and will probably only have culls late summer and early Fall. Right now, most of my silkie culls are spoken for. Even though they won't fit into my breeding program, they would make great little broodies and cockerels would make great little flock protectors--and they are still beautiful. The boys are very gentle. In the early Spring I will be hatching like crazy again, and I could possibly have chick culls if faults are obvious at that point. If you are up in the KC area-- ChooksChick (who is the Thread Starter for this thread) also raises Silkies! She would probably be a better bet for getting silkies close to you. :) I think she hatches pretty much constantly! LOL

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've gotten some what caught up around the house. Mopped the kitchen floor and the hall bath. Have been running laundry. I still have a LOT left to do. Sigh. I've been spending too much time day dreaming and thinking about my next show! LOL I can't wait to get that shirt to show in! Sheesh, I am getting crazier by the day.
I just went out to check on my birds. Not a single runny nose in any of the ducks (the goose wasn't cooperating to tell on her). I'm really beginning to think I'm losing my sanity.
hawkeye, you have got to make that show, wish i could but, I will stay on going to Columbia. I am headed out now to take pictures of the silkie kids.
I am also going to take some pictures of my rosecombs.
Oh trish and hawk, they do have a 5k run/walk here with Columbus days too.
Ive had a lot of interest on the poultry swap that Saturday, so should turn out to be a fun day!
I like buying locally because it is cheaper and dont have to pay for shipping
I really like ameracaunas and brahmas and speckled sussex to name a few, these are the ones I am looking for at the moment. I know when some breeders hit the end of their season they discount some so I hunt around. I like buying from individuals because I like to puurchase from the smaller breeders, their birds are normally better quality and true. Of course there are those certain ones that are slimy breeders but I always try my hardest to chat with the person and see pics and possibly visit their place if possible so I try to not support those kind, but you get... I am looking for a couple for my daughter for her bday (yea she wanted chickens) old english game but havent found any and for the amount of money I can afford.
I currently have RIR, new hampshire, d'uccle, bantam brahma, bantam and standard EE, phoenix, Barred/columbian rock, welsummer, sebrite,
