Consolidated Kansas

I broke down today. I think it may be a good thing in some way. I just have a small flock and try to let a hen hatch some chicks every year. In any case age and the fox have taken its toll. So buying feed at the feed store yesterday I see the chick guy is comming today. I told myself no more chicks in the house. The dust the smell and this time of year; Oh My god! the time to get them into the chicken house. Problem is I have 16 hens and I am getting 4 eggs a day. My girls are so old they lay soft eggs or are not laying any more. Well I have a box in the basement that will work in the kitchen, A light and chick starter. Duh! I am such a sucker. Went to buy 6, came home with 14. The way Allen was throwing extra chicks in my box I could tell this was his last stop and last sale of the year. I think someone could have offered some cheap bucks for what he had left over. Raise them and sell them. Money made. No real money in my view otherwise. still glad I got some chicks; my white rock hen who has been a good sitter in the past got off of 14 day incubation of welsummer eggs and let them get cold today. Bad word Bad word Bad word. I currently cant produce enough eggs for the people I work with. So 5 black sex links, 4 red sexlinks and 5 welsummers I am sure 4 are girls the freebe is a roo. For me here its just pets with perks. Just trying to keep a flock going in the back yard without having to buy out. Today is proof that at least some of my phlosophies sp? are subject to change. Back to load th wood stove and cook dinner. Live long a prosper Spock!

Howdy everyone! I am doing one last final sweeping clean out of birds. I hate to do it but I don't want to be huge and prego and out there trying to fill waterers this winter.

I have decided to concentrate on my banty cochins, geese and couple large fowl projects. DH can deliver to Andover on Mondays too if that helps anyone down that direction.
I though I would post the list here in case anyone is interested in anything just let me know. This is the list I am putting on craigslist so obviously prices are highly negotiable to fellow consolidated kansas byc friends.

I am thinking anything that is still here the end of the month I will take to the auction down in Garnett. I have never done that before but am thinking it may be a good option.

maidenwolf, my dh said no to potbelly pigs.

All this talk about beauty sleep. My youngest was sitting on the potty and he always sits there forever and I get so bored waiting on him. He asked me to get a balloon out of the bathtub and I did and he said, "You can get it becuase you have looooooooong arms", and while I was completely bent over getting it he blurted out, "and you have a biiiiiiigggggg butt". He wasn't being stinky, he was just jabbering like they do. I had to walk out, I was cracking up. Then the other kids asked what was wrong because I was laughing to the point of tears and my 8yo said "It's okay Mom, you don't look hideous!." OMGOSH!!!!!

Hawkeye, do you think that your good hatch from shaken up eggs was due to them sitting with the big end up for a couple of days? If it's perfect shipping temps and I have lots of indoor area ready, maybe I should take advantage of it? Are hatching eggs priced better at different times of the year? I keep admiring the pics of the silkies and they're so cute and fuzzy it makes me think they're little, but I realized that it's just becuase they look so fluffy that I think they are little. They remind me of babies. How big are they? This event that you are going to sounds like a huge deal, and a lot of work. I'm so sorry that you have sick kids, that's a lot going on. I hope they get better quickly.

ChicknBaron, that is an amazing chick pic. It is very unusually colored, I've never seen one that looked like that. It's reddish on the top layer but more gray underneath? That picture is amazing, very pretty, but I'm curious, I've never noticed before that chicks stand with their weight on the back part of their feet. The pic is so clear you can see the shadow beneath the middle toe. I can't wait to see how this one feathers out. Maybe it's some recessive gene being expressed, who knows? What do you think on this one? Rooster or hen?

Josie, awesome news on the interview. I hope you get your job, it sounds like a fun one.

Well, looks like I get to turn in early tonight. It's sad when 10:30pm seems early. Goodnight!
My 22 mon old tells me that he pats my behind and tells bigbutt just not very clear. They are so funny.

My daughter : Mom can i have some cellery?
Her: mom this taste like cellery
Me: that's what it is what did you want it to taste like?
Her: Chicken

Has he learned that from his father???

Wow! Josie! I can't believe you are getting rid of your cameos. I thought those were something you really wanted. Maybe if Trish pops on she might be interested. I would, if I had more pen space. I actually have too many for the pens I have now. If I had gotten a 48' building like I wanted instead of a 24' one I might have had the room. Is your gold laced polish bearded? Is she standard or bantam? I can get you $3 each for your roos if you don't mind them being eaten. I normally get $2 for roos but they are usually fairly small.

Way to go Mike. Getting chicks now is wise cause you'll have pullet eggs by spring.

Chickbaron, so sorry about your birds. *&^&#* hawks and other raptors anyway. I hate them for that. They can eat mice and wild rabbits. They don't need to eat our chickens.

Well I worked on my netting until I gave myself a migraine. Had to come in and drug up and then I was out of time. I finished feeding and watering and put four bales of straw in various pens for the birds hoping to keep them warmer tonight. I have two coops to clean out before I put straw in them. Then I have to put some in the new pens when I get them finished.

I have created the ultimate of monsters. I hadn't let the peachick or the pullet out of their bin for 2 days and I felt guilty so I let them out. I went outside to work and when I came back in couldn't locate them. When DH's alarm went off for him to get up and get ready for work, I looked in the bedroom. Those two birds were laying on my bed taking a nap with DH!!! I don't know if it was their idea or his. He is always short when he gets up and gets ready to work. I said, "You let the birds take a nap with you???" He said, "yes." and nothing more. I could tell by his tone he didn't have time to discuss it. Maybe in the morning I'll get more details.

MommaHen -- just for humor, this is what Silkies look like dressed out! Although-- I'm guessing these are the European silkies that are twice as big as our silkies here. Our silkies here in the USA would NOT be this large! LOL These are HUGE!

pretty scary compared to how cute and adorable they look with all of their feathers!

I had a very crazy day! DD and I jumped in the car headed for Arkansas at 5 a.m. to get the German New Hamps. So we're driving and driving and driving and we were on the west side of Tulsa when the phone rang. It was the seller. He had decided to go to Joplin after all! AAAaaackkkk!!!!! I had hoped we would meet in Joplin because it's closer but he had decided against it! Sigh. Anyway, it was 8 a.m. and he asked me if I had left yet. I explained that yes, we'd left sometime ago. Anyway, he was pretty set on going to Joplin and said it wasn't much further than going to his place from where I was, so he gave me directions and I changed course, just like that! Crazy thing, but no problem, I've never been to a swap before anyway, so I was good. We got there, got our birds and then breezed through the swap to see what was what. We found turkeys! They were a Bourbon Red/Royal Palm cross so I nabbed a boy (we all hope) for Tookie! We've named him Tom so now we have Tom and Tookie (AKA Turkey). She is bigger than him a bit so she immediately began bumping the new guy to let him know who's boss. But she was one happy Turkey making all kinds of happy turkey sounds and Tom started gobbling. What fun! Now Tookie isn't the only Turkey!

So tired, so I'm sorry I didn't catch up with everyone but I just had to tell you about my new turkey. Didn't even ruffle DH's feathers! He's a keeper!

Oh dear so sorry. darn those hawks. They are a pest anymore to poultry keepers.

Karen that is awesome. I might have to get some eggs from you next spring. Not that I need any more breeds! I just think those reds are gorgeous.
Maidenwolf, glad you posted. It reminded me I haven't shut the birds up yet.

I'm so sorry that those stupid hawks invaded. GRRR. I'm quite crushed too. I took the kids to town, and when I came home the dog met me at the van. He doesn't usually do that. He's always there, but doesn't come to meet me at the door as I get out. He was making funny sounds, like he was talking to me. I asked him what was wrong?, as though he understands English, duh....Then I saw one of my 2 mo old chicks right there dead in the drive way. I know he did it. If I had been there, he wouldn't have. It was hardly messed up at all, it looked like it should be okay. He was just playing with it. This is the same dog I posted a pic of him with a chick. He's good if I'm watching, I can let him in the pens with me and he'll help me get them in if they get out, although if I wasn't there I think he would play with them. I know he's just a pup, we got him in March and he was tiny, but geez!!! How long is this going to take? This is the second one he got. The first one was early in the summer. Another time I caught him and yelled his name and he dropped it unharmed. What am I supposed to do? Needless to say, the 2 mo olds will get their wings clipped tomorrow.

I mentioned earlier about a sale that's going to be in Pittsburg. Here's the link....

Does anyone know anything about this hatchery?
