I have a 1 wk old chick who suddenly has seemed to have trouble on her feet. she lays mostly and when she stands she is wobbly. When she inches around she uses her wings as support and she shakes her head alotMaiden wolf, what are you having trouble with? Maybe I can help.
Thank you! I wrote it all down! You have a few extra things I don't have. What about that zinc oxide-- what is that for? I just use the VetRX on their combs to make them all glossy. I can't put anything on their legs, they are covered in feathers. I think I need a real bag instead of my grocery bag! LOLMy show bag.
It is black and yellow stanley bag you can buy at Wal-mart. They have two different sizes, so I got the small one. It has two hoop handles, and side pockets and zipper on top.
In my bag---
!. Vetrx
2. Wet ones (mainly for me!)
3.Bottle of Hartz Ultra Guard Pluz flea and tick spray.
4. Mixed up srpay bottle of Tek-Trol.
5. Zinc oxide ointment.
6. Small tube of Vaseline.
Extra wash rags for cleaning feet.
Silk cloth for wiping birds down in case they get crazy with the shavings, so I can dust them off.
Empty zip lock back usually a gallon size.
small sandwich bag, for placing soiled shavings in to help keep pen clean.
small zip ties.
Clippers
Q-tips for applying Vetrx.
cotton balls
Metal nail file.
Extra copies of health papers from state.
Extra copy of NPIP test papers, and flock report.
Small zipper bag of feed, and a gallon of water from home.
I'm taking 8 birds ---- 4 cockerels and 4 pullets. I have another very nice girl, but she is not in condition, the rooster really did her over. HA! Nope, you need those sickle feathers! Hopefully by Spring everyone is looking great.I am taking 5 birds. 4 pullets, and 1 cockerel. Everybody else is not is show condition, and can't go. I wanted to take my senior Cock bird, but he is still short some feathers.
Cant go with out sickle feathers...![]()
oh no! That does sound more likely! Yikes! I put my eggs in a dark closet that is cooler so that I don't mess with them. Take a pic of that couch! Sounds neat! I want to see a "before" picture of when it's a mess.Well here's something DH brought up on this subject. And I am wondering if it is what happened. I usually get my eggs ready and load cartons on the kitchen counter. Then I separate them into bags or boxes to go to my customers. DH thought if I had the eggs settling in the carton on the counter I might have accidentally sold them as eating eggs to someone. Just the thought of that makes me feel ill. What if I sold a $20 dozen of eggs to someone for $1.50 to eat them?
In reality it could have happened. I could go check my burn barrel and see what eggs I threw out but if they weren't marked I don't know if I could tell.
I just wish I could remember whether they actually arrived or not.
DH and I worked on an antique Pullman couch I had in the Sea van.
That is great news about Lucie!! You'll be fine with a baby, there are so many products to keep them safe. I used a PeanutShell as a sling for all of my babies. You just stick them down in there, and it looks and sounds daunting at first, but when they are newborn-- that is the BEST time to use it. Then they can be carted around hands free! If you want my PeanutShell, I was going to take it to a baby shop, but you can just have it if you want. It would be your size, because I bought the "small". It's a plain Kaki color, but it will go with anything.Lucie is doing well. She is out of surgery and getting pain meds every four hours. Her bladder is intact and she has a urinary catheter in place to keep her clean and her bladder empty. She ate well for them tonight so they are going to start her on oral antibiotics and pain meds as well. She will start sling walking tomorrow every four hours to get back on her feet. She has a pin and a plate in each hind leg and they think she will do well and recover well. I am so relieved. Wish I could go see her but have to work tomorrow and she is two hours away. Hoping if they pull the urinary catheter tomorrow and she can urinate on her own she can go home on Thursday. I have a sling ordered to walk her and we are going to crate her in the living room. I am worried about her having to up and down the stairs to go outside but hopefully we will get the hang of it fast. She really can't afford to slip and fall down right after surgery. Sigh. I don't know what I am going to do when we have a child if I am this much of a basket case over the dog.
I would go ahead and frame in the part where you'll be needing the clear roofing. You don't want it unsupported. You will have to probably use a shim because of the height difference. But you could just cut off part of the OSB and put it on the frame/brace. Even if you frame across under it, you will still get in a lot of light! So I wouldn't worry about how much you have to frame/brace under it. My large horse barn is done the same way. I can go out and take a picture of how it's done with the skylights if you want? That is so sad about your DH and his sensitive stomach!! That would make it doubly hard to run with that problem. How does he get in all of his protein during the run? The water and gatoriade stands alone won't refuel. Poor guy!Hawkeye, my DH has tried all kinds of those gels, beans, all kinds of stuff & they seem to make his stomach worse not better. He decided to just drink the things they offer along the way any more, but he usually can't eat for several hours after due to his stomach upset even though he is hungry from so much exertion. I'm really surprised they will let you on the road where the marathon is taking place. They have changed the route you know from what it used to be.
Well My DH worked a little on the coop today & got the last door cut out on the back of the coop, but didn't get that last piece of OSB screwed on yet. He has the two ends now to put OSB on & then he can start putting siding on. Hawkeye, do you have any ideas about putting the skylight sections in on the roof? Should we just leave that whole piece of OSB out or should we leave a little frame for the skylight panel to sit on? Then I guess there will be no roof under those sections, there will be two to let more light in. I hope it doesn't let too much cold air in there. I don't know what else to do though to use the skylights. I had to pay $48 each for those two skylight panels & they were special order. I actually had to order all the Ondura roofing special because I wanted a different color than what they carry in the store. Then we had to order a minimum of 10 panels in order to get them so I will have some left over. I can use some of them probably for my rabbit hutches or maybe over the hoop coop eventually. It depends on how many we have left over.
I use the CoOp in Peck here... and then there is the CoOp in Mulvane that I use! I use it the most. Basically, they are always put right next to the railroad tracks so that the freight can be shipped and dumped right in. I know Derby doesn't have a CoOp--- it's a big grain elevator you are looking for! Then you just drive up into the main area and they have a little "store/shop". The out lying areas would have one because of the Ag business. I bet RoseHill has one. You could just look up CoOp in the phone book??Okay, next dumb question. How do you find a co-op? Everyone always talks about them but I've never seen one. I have access to Atwoods, Orschelns, TSC, and I used to go to a feed store in Wichita that wasn't part of a big chain, but I've never seen anything calling itself a Co-op. I tried looking in the white pages but didn't come up with anything.....
Sounds like you are busy with the new pup. Glad the chicken got her, hopefully she will be respectful of them!I've been busy trying to potty train the new pup! LOL. She has her good hours and her bad. She'll get the hang of it. She's very curious about the chickens too. Got up close and one of them pecked her nose and now she's scared to death of them. LOL. She wants to watch me feed them, but won't get within 5 feet of the fence. I have no problems with that!
Thanks for all the kind words about Kaylea. As a grandma, I'm kinda partial to her, so it's good to know that It's not just me that thinks she's adorable. hehe
All of my birds are getting along just fine. We winterized the coop a couple days ago and packed it full of straw. That's kept the birds busy rearranging it from how I had it. I've also been buying up cheap squashes and halving those to throw into the coop to keep them busy. It's funny to see the new "clicks" that are being created. One of the GLOrps is now with the "old timers" and is begging at the gate right along with them. My silkie has sided now with the new girls and is hanging with them all the time. It's probably because they don't pick on her as much. LOL
WOW! Sounds like they were going crazy in there! LOL And here you said you couldn't grow mealworms! hehehe! Maybe neglect is okay? ha!I can't remember who asked about mealworms, was it sapphire? Anyway, I had a ton of beetles for the longest time and I decided last week that I would pitch the bin out to the chickens and just give up on the project. Well I haven't gotten around to it and tonight I thought I best just do it and get rid of them. When I pulled the bin out it was like a horror film! The whole bin was just writhing and crawling with baby mealworms!! I mean, you could hear them all crawling around in there, it was crazy. So I chopped up some potatoes for them and put them back! maybe its not as bad as I thought!
Glad you found your bird. Funny! There is a collar that goes with the invisible fencing, and it will zap them, yes. Or you can just buy the shock collars (I have one) for your dog and hold the remote and zap them when they do something stupid.... like try to run off, or eat your birds..I found my missing chicken. She happens to be from my 3 mo old group but I found her in the the 2 mo old group. I don't know how that happened. I noticed she was gone the evening after we finished the new coop, we were out there all day and didn't notice her getting out. She was found directly next door in the 2 mo old coop, they are now sharing a fence between them. There's nothing for her to get on top of in that pen to get out so she had to have gone through the gate while it was open as we were going in and out, and someone must have thought she belonged in the other pen. I don't know how it happened. I left her there though, she seemed to be doing fine with the younger ones. Which makes me think, can I just put the 2 and 3 mo olds together now that they are closer in size? Our big coop is pretty full, could I remove the cockerals and add the 2-3 mo old pullets in the big coop with the layers? I really want the extra roosters out of that coop, there are several that need to just be fattened up.
I don't know what an invisible collar is but I'm assuming it's something zaps them to train them to stay within certain perimeters???
The stuff about the guns, I held a gun for the longest time ever that night my ds and I rescued that calf. He left the gun in my hands, basically shoved it at me because I was to stand there with the calf and he went to get the truck. The coyotes were going crazy and they sounded so close so I was already very scared, but I was too scared to notice I was holding the gun the entire time. That's the longest I've ever held a gun. It took me over 10 years to get in the chicken coop so it may just take me a while to get used to guns too. I feel like it will be important that I am able to at some point, probably when the boys are grown and gone. So in the next 5 years I need to learn to shoot it, but if I just hold it sometimes, or maybe I'll just go outside and watch when they shoot next time. I won't let the boys shoot when my dh isn't home unless it's somemthing important. This summer my then 12 yo ds shot 2 5 ft long snakes 'dancing' in a very close tree. He got them one at a time but without any trouble at all.
Oh noHave you seen the Nutri-drench for poultry? I always keep some on hand. I would say jus by what you describe, that the chick has a fluid build up in the brain, which is applying pressure. Head shaking would be from the discomfort of the pressure in the brain. So, that also cause the unsteadyness on her feet. As youn as the chick is I really doubt it will make it for long.![]()
lizzy`` No better than my birds eat milo, that ration would not work for me.
