Consolidated Kansas

Well I got Jasmine fixed so she won't go after the guineas & now I have to work on Lily. It had been Jasmine that was the problem with them, but I guess I was feeling a bit too confident that Lily wouldn't. She hadn't bothered them, that is until today & I caught her in the act of eating one. So Lily will get some training with the shock collar tomorrow. I was so mad at that dog that I beat her with the dead guinea. Of course it was one of my biggest ones too, grrrr.
Oh no! Hopefully that will break her of any thought of doing it again, and fast.
wow that would freak me out. Glad to hear and bout Lucie surgery going so well.

Yesterday we had a scare DH had is chemo session shortly after starting he had severe abnominal pain. They ordered an Xray but nothing showed up so they ordered an emergency cat scan but thank God everything was okay he had a reaction to chemo he doc said he thinks its time to stop the chemo. They wanted to make sure he hadn't perforated his bowel talk about scared i was just thinking to myself how am going to take care of him and our kids.
That is scary! I hope he will be okay. Sending good thoughts and energy to you and your family >>><3<<<

Thanks for the offer, but I don't have anywhere to put them right now. I would love to buy your birds, but that step will have to wait until we have additional coop space.

sharol
sharol, I have a yearling pair of silver campines that I am going to let go If you are interested.

Thanks to the person who posted the video on how to sex waterfowl. I'm sure he makes it look easier than it is, but at least now I think I am capable of doing it!

Ok I gave the vit E capsule to her she drank it as I squeezed it out, such a good girl.
How often do I give it and should I give the poly-vi-sol also,,
Now on to the next problem, I have a turkey with an injured leg. It is swollen at the base of the leg at the foot. All toes are swollen as well. Were is my turkey doc..

No problem sharol, just thought I would throw it out to you. They are not advertised, and I probably won't either.

Not crazy about lots of people tromping around here. Just got home, sister-in-laws house was broken into. They are not home, Ransacked the bedroom, but do not see anything missing, but I have not gone through her house taking note of what all is around either. Hopefully they can get home this week. What a mess!!!!

A report on my new baby chicks: I have never seen so calm of chick. The last time I did chicks in a box in my kitchen they were skitzo! You walk by and they scramble and squeek, nocking over water bottles etc. These chicks just look up at me and seem to say Mamma? Well the cute thing is I work with the developmentaly disabled and then with those who have dementia. I took chicks to work. Oh my goodness they loved them. These chicks brought the past back to them. They were little mothers again, they were so gentel and so loving, and they were friends again. It was a very rewarding experience to help these people grab again what has been eluding them for some time. One lady who spends most of here time in her bedroom spent the whole evening holding feeding and just watching chicks. If any of you ever get a chance to visit a nursing home or center for developmentally disabled consider doing it just for a few hours. Any way in regard to hawks I have never really had a problem but do have them around. I have had foxes coons and dogs. When a hawk or fox gets too close I have a bottle rocket launcher attached to a deck rail where it will launch a rocket just above the chicken pen. On the 4th I buy some and keep them in the closet. Should I think there is a preditor near I set two off. They explode in the trees above the pen. The launcher is a bent peice of conduit/ pipe nailed to the deck rail at the correct angle to deliver the rocket just above the birds. It really does work. I know you cant really do this in the city but you sure can in the country. Some cities you can get a permit to use fireworks to scare away birds. Why not hawks?
That was an awesome idea taking chicks to work and I love the idea of using bottle rockets to scare off predators. I'm going to try that. I have a pack of coyotes that runs through here making a ridiculous racket.

Yep, it was me. That's awesome that they were still thriving! Perhaps they were mostly in pupal stage and that's how they survived? From what I understand, they don't eat when they are pupae. I just can't wait to get started on mine, I know my chickies will LOVE them!
Ah, that makes sense. I will probably just go ahead and make up some buckets for next year and go ahead and get them hung, so they will be ready when I need them.
I will should have some Blue Copper Marans in a few days, if you don't find something else before then. We are in Hutchinson, though, so not sure how far away you are from us, there in Missouri.
That's very cool. Nice of you to do that for them :)
Mine occasionally get alfalfa pellets when I dump out the rabbit bowls and they eat them right up. But, they are more expensive than chicken feeds, so I wouldn't be able to afford to feed it to them regularly.
Wow, you indeed are a woman of many talents! I love those redos, good job!

Well, after I posted here last night, I went out to do last check on the animals, since I hadn't been here most of the day. I'm glad I did! One of the cockerels was roosted on top of the Marans tractor, so I picked him up and put him over the fence. As I did, I noticed the fence (electrified poultry netting) appeared to have something laying on it, weighing it down very low, to where the chickens could get out. It was a chicken! I thought, "oh great and I'm sure she's dead". I grabbed her legs and started to untangle her. She was stiff and cold, but as I turned her over and started dislodging her wings from the tangled mess, I noticed under her wings were still very warm. So, I figured she hadn't been dead long and I would just go ahead and process her. Well, as I got more of the netting off of her, I could hear her breathing. It was very raspy because the netting was tangled around her neck. I was finally able to free her and she was just shivering like crazy, poor girl! I'm sure she was in shock. I zipped her up in my sweatshirt to warm her up while I finished checking on everyone, then took her inside. She had no damage on her anywhere, but her right leg was very cold and toes were curled. I held her for awhile longer, then put her in the brooder with the heat lamp on for a little while, just to get her warmed back up and gave her some electrolyte water to drink. In this case, thankfully, the battery on the solar fence charger has worn down, so no current was going through her while she was in the fence. This morning, she was just fine, her leg is working again and warm. She's been making her little chicken noises and scratching around in the brooder, so she will go back out to the pen this evening. Poor thing, it just makes me sick to think how long she might have been in that fence :(
Wow! What a bummer! I have the electric poultry fencing, too, and would hate to come across such a scene. Good job nursing her back to health. I'm so glad she's doing well.

Are they going to just take a break in treatments or stop it entirely? How stressful for all of you.

I've been collecting eggs for hatching but the girls aren't laying like they were during the long days of summer. So. I've decided to try the Cayenne Pepper in their feed to try to increase egg production. Has anyone here tried that? My best breeder pen with the four spotted ginger hens has only produced 1 egg daily. Bummer.

I have aunts, cousins, their daughters and one grandbaby are coming to hang in the craft room and see my birds this Saturday. Hope the weather cooperates, some of them will be driving in from a couple hours away. I'm looking forward to it but am busy getting ready for them.

You have a large craft room? I want a large craft room someday with a quilting machine. My nest will soon be empty and I will not be busy going to high school and college games to watch my kids in their sports. I'll have more time, sure hope I have the energy to do all I've been thinking about to help me adjust to the empty nest.

Kansas Prairie, yes I do! My DH was generous enough to share half of a big shop space with me. It has central heat and a window a/c unit. I got the A/C after birds overheated this past summer and wound up in the master bedroom and even in the bathtub.

Sapphire, that was me that posted that video on sexing water fowl, I just saw it & thought it might help someone. I watched one on vent sexing chicks today, wow that was messy. They squeeze the chicks to make them poop & then check their vents to see what sex they are. I guess the people who do that all day long at the hatcheries are pretty fast at it, but it takes some practice to get it right I'm sure.

checoukan, I'm sorry to hear your SIL's place was broken into, what a thing to come back home to.

michelleml, I'm sorry your DH is having such a hard time. Are they going to stop the chemo altogether? I know how tough that all is to go through, my late husband had lung cancer & went through chemo & radiation. It just makes them so sick & you sometimes wonder which is worse, the disease or the treatment. I'm sending hugs your way.

I never can get the multi quote to work right for me. KarenS, good luck with all of your company, I hope they enjoy seeing your birds.

Kansas Prairie, boy does Karen have a large craft room, it's enormous & really super nice, we're all envious that have seen it. Karen, I need to come over after this vacation & scrap my pics. I'm behind about 3 or 4 vacations now. I was doing really well for awhile & now with having the chickens I haven't gotten any scrapping done. Do you have a Cricut? I have one, but not the latest one & I haven't used it as much as I should be. I have cartridges out the wazoo for it.

Well this afternoon wasn't the best for me. I found Lily with the dead guinea, she had eaten half of it already. Then I was unloading my truck load of cattails & when I went in to put some in the Ameraucana pen the darned rooster freaked out & flew out the door as I was coming in with a pitchfork full of cattails. He is the devil when it comes to other roosters, he just wants to fight them all & kill them, so he can't be let out of the pen at all, ever. He took off up the hill & I figured well he'll be back & sure enough he came strutting back down & started a fight with first one rooster & then the other. Even the Black Copper Marans had his neck feathers all standing straight out in preparation to fight this guy & he is the most docile of them all. I followed them around behind the pen & as he was getting ready to jump on the Marans rooster I grabbed him while he was focused on fighting. He is a great breeder rooster & produced a lot of nice babies last year, but he isn't a nice boy at all. He looks really scraggly right now too because he's been moltiing. I kind of bopped him upside the head as I put him back in the pen for acting so bad. You have to let these guys know who is boss.

I got started on putting the plastic on the hoop coop for the peacocks, but ran out of plastic & staples, so I have to go get some tomorrow. I need about 3 more small tarps too to put on the pens, but I will wait until I buy groceries & sneak them in with those. I did find out where I can get some of those plastic barrels with the screw lids today, so I think I might get 3 of those Monday when I go to Wichita. Then I will be ready to buy some bulk feed. I just need to find out if I can get a smaller amount somewhere first. I will have to check around.
