Consolidated Kansas

I was interested in this too so I just did a google search and found this: http://www.freewebs.com/ksgoatlady/ Hopefully it is the same one Karen was talking about. DH and I have tossed around the idea of goats and I'd be interested in checking this out with you or as well as you....

I haven't eaten goat but an interesting fact is that goat meat is the most widely consumed meat throughout the world! Although in western countries we eat more beef, pork and chicken than anything, in other parts of the world where an animal the size of a cow can't be supported, goats are the mostly widely raised animals for meat and I guess overall, more pounds of goat meat are consumed than anything else. So it can't taste *that* bad LOL.
we need some goat fajitas or goat kabobs to see how they taste! A goat BBQ! LOL If they actually tasted good, then I might be swayed. I checked out her site, I'm thinking that must be it, because it says she is in Derby KS. Looks like she got her start with her kids in 4-H doing the Market Goats and went from there! So neat! I wonder how much per lb you can expect to sell them for? I know our club families have their goats rendered, so maybe I'll ask them too!

I used to have goats but after a few years I decided it was a lot of work and I lost my favorite one. I never ate one though. There are certain ethnic groups who love eating goats and will buy them like hotcakes around here.
If you decide to buy goats it's better to buy from a breeder than from a sale or an auction. One thing to check on is to see if they've been tested and are CL free. A lot of people don't care but once it starts in your herd it will spread from goat to goat you can't get rid of it. It will eventually kill a goat and it could cause infections in other livestock.
I got the chipmonks moved to their cage and I keep changing plans. I don't know if it is the weather or they are feeling freaked out but they've been sleeping most of the day. They ran around checking it out at first but since then they are staying hidden. I went to the cattle shelter and dug out a couple old drawers from cabinets we took out of the house. They were just the right size to make a couple of nest boxes for the chippies. I had DH make them for me and he didn't quite understand how I wanted them but it's nothing I can't fix. I need a top I can remove if I need to. I think I can repair them so they will work. I could go out and do some cutting myself but I've had enough of that wind. so until they are changed I'm not going to put them in yet.
I've been waiting to catch them out running but no luck. I'll take pictures of them when I can. Here is a picture of their cage. Keep in mind this thing is 30 inches deep, 57inches wide and 6 foot tall. It is sitting next to my china hutch which is taller than me.

Karen I have a butt kicking headache as well from allergies I am sure. It feels like my head will explode.
I have a swedish flower chick not doing well. I brought him in to nurse him a little but I don't think his chances are very good. He's about 3 weeks old and all the others are fine. Not sure if it is neurological or what.
I ran out of feed today but it is too windy to try to haul a load of it home. I just kind of spread the feed out so everyone got some.
I mixed up some instant milk, vitamins and sugar for the pig earlier. I was hoping that would win him over. He had thrown up a little which I have never seen a pig do, so I doubt he is feeling very good. I just keep trying to win him over and maybe some day he'll get the idea. I did notice after that he had finally gotten out in the pen instead of just sleeping in the straw. I couldn't tell if he had tried the milk or not.

Hawkeye- Oh I certainly dont call names because I am not that person at all. Plus I care about what my kids learn from me. I am renting and have been wanting to go anyway we have found a property down the road aways, more land and nearest neighbor is a couple acres away, better situation, better house and more land and 6 outbuildings,, ooo the possibilities lol

Maidenwolf I had to snicker at your post. (Not indicating that you have ever said anything wrong around your kids.! ) But.....the things our kids learn from us!! You know I never realized I said half of the things I did until I heard my babies repeat them.
lol.png
That all goes under the file of funny kid stories. Many of them I couldn't write here because of the language!!! I didn't even realize I used some phrases they repeated!!! It seems everything I ever said around my kids has come back to haunt me in some way. Either good, bad, or hillarious!
I would so want to move in that situation if there is something nicer available.

Danz I totally agree, I have had that one smack me in the face before
ep.gif
.... Absolutely. But I always try to correct it if I can. I dont speak ill of people in front of them though, I do not want them to learn that from me. If there is something to be said about someone I teach them to stop and think about the situation and what the other person is feeling. I by no means am perfect,, geesh,, oh the times I have fallen off the truck

.. We all mess up , but we all need to learn to fix or redeem or mess ups.. I live in the rural part of the county so having this neighbor as close as they are is not common here at all, and this was just temp anyway. It just gives me more drive to find a place that will finance us with terrible credit.. These people are the type that if you get mad at them for some reason, am I am the type to let someone know when i am upset, then you become a terrible person and they treat you like you have the plague and the kids cannot come near.. I am dont dealing with it for sure and just want relief..

HEChicken, in a way it makes me feel less stupid to know that others didn't know better either, but it also makes it more scary because that shows me how many could accidentally make the same mistake. The dr. even said he didn't know something like that could happen and he had to go research.
checoukan, I like the plastic feeders better for washing but I quit buying them because we kept breaking them somehow.

sapphire, it sounds like you have a tremendously busy schedule. I don't know how ya'll do it with all the running around. I'm sorry to hear about your losses.
:(
Trish, it's something about the metal being heated above a certain temp. Galvanized means it's coated with another substance to keep it from rusting which is great I suppose. The open flame of my stove didn't help, if it were an electric stove it probably wouldn't have been as bad. I thought about writing to the company and asking them to put little sticker on them, look how many people didn't know. I'm just not sure it would do much good, there are so many galvanized items. I just bought a new one today, it has no label of any kind on it.

Funny story, one time a family member sort of demanded that I make the pies for a gathering at the last minute. I didn't have time, I didn't want to, but I felt like I had to. I was up so late and then we had to get up early to go there because it's a couple of hours away. I was making pies and making pies and I said, "I can't believe I'm making all these frickin' pies." I was so tired and frustrated. We got there and everyone was eating pie and one of my kids said, "This frickin' pie is so good Mom." I about died and I hoped no one heard her. Then another relative asked her, "What kind of pie?" OMGOsh! Well, everyone laughed and I did too but I was so embarrassed too. Open mouth, insert foot.

My furnace is still out, we bought some basic items to make our own part, but now we have to wait for 6 hours for the JB Weld. That'll be midnight. I don't even know if it'll work but I think it will. I'm going to go out and check all the lights and probably put anothe rin. Hope ya'll have a great night.

Wow Danz, that is some cage! Those are some lucky little chipmunks! Can you just use some pine shavings in the drawers & then put some dry leaves on top for them to burrow into?

I went down to G.E. at Strother Field where my DH works & when I got out of the car to go into the building to get my flu shot I was hit by this horrific blast of wind. I was trying to get up the stairs to go in & it almost lifted me off my feet & I'm no small person. I finally made it in the door & looked behind me & there was a young couple with a baby trying to fight their way in too. Then when I came back out a few minutes later I was fighting my way down the stairs & this poor guy with a cane was trying to get to the stairs. I told him to watch out up there because it was awful. He did have a lady with him to help him up the stairs fortunately. I came back home & decided I just wasn't up to fighting that wind to clean out my rabbit cages today, so I guess I'll wait till tomorrow & hope it's better. I've got to get that done, so I guess if it's not nice tomorrow I will be doing it anyway.

I have been trying to integrate a new Ameraucana hen into the pen with my Big Blackie rooster that I had hatched this year. She is now old enough to go in with the trio that is in there. I tried putting her in at night one night & the next day she was cowering in the nest box scared to death, so I let her go back to the grow-out pen for a couple more days. Tonight I decided to put her in a crate where the others could see her but not attack her & she was yelling at the rooster & he was carrying on like crazy when I was out there. I sure hope they can get to know each other because she is part of my breeding program for the lavender Ameraucanas for next year. I do have a rooster out in the pen too I noticed, so I will use him also. I will need another pen to put the lavender hens & the new rooster in, but I'll worry about that next spring. If all works out well then I should get some pretty little lavender Ameraucana chicks next spring, I just love that color!

I have been slowly introducing a few new pullets from the grow-out pen into the main flock & so far so good. I have all 3 Welsummers in there now & one lavender Orpington/Isabel pullet I just moved yesterday & one lavender Orpington rooster. At least it is starting to get a little less crowded in that grow-out pen with me moving some birds out. Whenever the new breeder coop is done & the pens most of the Swedish Flower Hens will be moving out there, the Cream Legbars, & the Salmon Favorelles, along with the Speckled Sussex that are now in the main coop. I got some really nice Speckled Sussex pullets this year. KarenS, you would like them because they really have a lot of white spots on them, they're beautiful & I'm going to be using the best two hens for breeding for next spring. So if you need any SS chicks let me know because I should have some. I can't wait to start hatching all of these different kinds of chicks, it should be fun!

My DH didn't work on the new coop today
sad.png
, he went to the gym but I didn't say anything & won't unless he doesn't work on it the next two days. We will have our granddaughter Sunday so no work will get done that day, but that's OK because we haven't gotten to have her over for about a month. It will be nice to spend the day with her again.

Oh Hawkeye, speaking of goats, I have been working on my DH to get a couple of Boer kids for brush control on the part of our land we don't mow. There is a lady up in Hutchinson that raises bunches of them & that is where I plan to go get some if he says yes, she is a friend of Sunflowerparrot's. We went up there recently & helped feed them while we were there. Those kids are so cute when they're little! I have never eaten goat either, but I know it is a delicacy in some ethnic groups & they sell baby ones at certain times of the year to them. They have been going lately for about $2 a pound live weight I think is what they told me. I know this lady is going to have more babies she said the in November or December. What a great 4H project that would be for your kids!

It was super windy and chilly today but a good one over all. I got my second egg today, and more hens that are very close.. Still looking for a couple special chicks, hens and or turkey if anyone has anything left. Hope everyone had a good day.

It was SUPER windy the last 2 days here too. It kept blowing open the door on the coop. I haven't had much time to get on here lately... sorry. The chicken tractor is working flawlessly :) so that's good :) the chicks are getting SOOO big! i can't believe how fast they grow and get their feathers... I'll try to find some time to post some updated pics of the chicks! I'll TRY... So don't take my word for it haha. I saw on another thread about the new BYC calendars coming out soon and was wandering if any of you have ever gotten one and could tell me where i could get one.

The only way I knew about heating up galvanize is because we had a neighbor who tried to weld some galvanized stuff, put him in the hospital for a while. . Last week we used propane to heat up a big galvanized wash tub to boil a skull clean. We made sure it was out in the open, and with that smell from the elk and the maggots we stayed up wind for sure.

What's wrong with your furnace that JB weld can fix? I loved it when our furnace was out, the dh is a better snuggler when he is freezing! Cools off the hot flashes too!

DANZ
WOW! I've never seen anything like that cage! When you said big, you were serious. Looks like it's well made and in great shape.
